Same Sun, Different Sky!

I'm not a scientist nor a meteorologist, but simply a nature lover, and I've come to realize that location and time have a lot to do with the kind of sunset you get. Wondering why I said so? I'll tell you. But first, take a look at these two images I captured just a few days ago.

  • Urban Area Sunset.

At 18:53 PM WAT, golden hour is gone, day shifts to night, and what we see is a sky that's painted with pink and orange hues - a perfect sunset!

This shot was taken from my church, St Ambrose Catholic Church, Ogbor Hill, which actually is on a hill. From up there you catch a glimpse of the Nigerian Breweries Plc and other buildings across the Aba Waterside River, their lights already lit up, adding charm to the sky.

Countryside Sunset

At 17:29PM WAT, it's still earlier, the sky looks quiet and moody, and the sun blocked, with softer gray-white glow.

A shot taken from the rural area, a village in Obingwa LGA, to be precise.

Now to why the two sunsets appear different

Cities have more dust, smoke, and particulates in the air from traffic, factories, generators and all. Those particles scatter light and amplify the reds, oranges, pinks - kinda dramatic.

However, the countryside tend to have cleaner air, less scattering, more cloud cover diffused light - less intense color. And as at the time of capturing the photo, the sun’s still high and fighting clouds, that's why the sky shows that moody, muted vibe instead of deep colors.

So you see two sunsets' moods from different locations, shot at different times. One looks kinda dramatic and romantic, the other one, moody. 😂

Do you think location and time can actually change how sunsets appear. I'll love to read your comments. Thank you.

See? The artist and the scientist and the layman can find things to talk about with each other. All can appreciate such things if they want to. I miss the stars in my hometown much more than my actual hometown! Hardly any stars in Tokyo
