A Photographers Nightmare - Corrupted SD Card Recover
A few days ago, I went to a concert and took about 900 photos of the band from the crowd. The band is a great one that I’ve known for quite a while and has released some really cool songs. They played outdoors for free—a fantastic opportunity for a photographer to get some great shots of a band. Today I had a little more time and wanted to back up the photos—which are still on the camera. After the shoot, I just set the camera aside.
So I insert the card into my card reader and want to start backing up the data... And then? Then Windows tells me it can’t find any data on the storage device—which really can’t be right. So I put the card back into my Sony Alpha 7 III and checked to see if I could at least find the concert photos on the camera... And? Unfortunately, no—the camera also tells me to format the card now...
Wow... I was totally shocked at first and couldn't really wrap my head around where the problem was. Frantic, I asked Google Gemini AI what I could do in this situation to save the concert photos... It suggested I try the software “Recuva.” I downloaded it and gave it a shot, but unfortunately, Recuva didn't recognize the memory card... Damn... so I had to keep looking for a solution...
I told Google Gemini again that Recuva had failed and asked for other options -> In the end, I was able to recover the vast majority—about 95% of the images (JPG and RAW files)—using the software “PhotoRec”

I’ve had the software running for about 2.5 hours now, and while searching for files on the SD card, it immediately restored the files it found to a folder I specified right at the start. So far, I’ve been able to recover 979 JPGs and the corresponding 965 RAW files (TIF format).

I have absolutely no idea how it’s possible that my camera—or perhaps even the PC—could have corrupted the data structure on the 512 GB SD card when I inserted it.
I’ll now make sure to insert a second card for upcoming photo jobs, which will serve as a direct backup stored in the camera. But this incident has somewhat shaken my confidence in technology and is prompting me to create backup plans for my photography even faster and more efficiently.
Have you ever had an experience like that, or something similar? Data recovery can be really annoying.
So far i never had that problem on non of my Sony camera's , but i always use a USB cable to copy the files with my pc from my camera to my NAS
Hmm I experienced it while ago when my SD card got encrypted in 2021, which was in my use for more then of 2 years, that was 128GB and I have had 300+ photos infact memories; I tried my best with using some recovery softwares to recover that but all in vain.
And, I lost all of my photos :(
I feel that pain! Fortunately, it's been ages since that happened to me. And in that case, it was a metal pendrive that I had on my keychain, but fortunately everything I had was backed up. Good to know about that software!
It's always good to have a few options for stuff like that. I have used Recuva in the past and it has been great. A long time ago I had a server crash and I had to send the drives out to Ontrack to get the data recovered. It was a costly mistake I don't plan to make again.
SD card corruption is one of those problems that every photographer hits eventually but nobody prepares for. The moment you realize the files might be gone is worse than losing the camera itself. Glad you were able to recover it — any specific recovery software that actually worked?
The one which has worked was https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec took a bunch of time and recovered rougly 95% of everything.
Never had that problem.
I only use Sandisk Extreme Pro.
It happend to an Sandisk Extreme Pro Micro SD 512 GB
Ah, not good!
