Dachshund Dynasty - a Tale of Nine Sausages and Two Misfits

Lily, a real little madam who loves having a cup of tea, and Crusoe, the charmer, landed in the lap of luxury and an abundance of love the day they came to live in the home of my brother and his wife.
My brother bought Crusoe, and Lily was adopted by my sister-in-law. The poor little doggie came from a bad background - a divorce, and neither partners wanted to keep her, so was a troubled little girl. It took her some time to settle down.
Both my brother and his wife adore their sausages, who get the very best care! They've had a couple of Dachshunds over the years, as can be seen in the painting above.
The sausages visit the vet for regular check-ups and dental care, and eat home-cooked meals lovingly prepared by Mandy. Only the best will do for these two lucky doggies!

Crusoe politely holds out his hand paw asking for a treat.

They have a small collection of Dachshund artwork. My older brother made the brass-coated sausage dog sculpture - clever use of the hammer head.
Lily, who borders on a miniature, also wanted to be in the photo;)

As you saw in the first image, my brother and his wife adore Dachshunds - think I've already said that, but never mind - seven beloved dogs have passed away and become furry angels.

Adolf and Vlooi were the odd ones out and the first to find themselves in this loving family. Adolf was a Doberman and sadly got a brain tumour at the tender age of only one. They adopted Vlooi, a mixed-breed Terrier, when my parents moved. He became blind, was always walking into things and fell off a wall one day. They had to do the inevitable and tearfully had the vet put Vlooi to sleep.

The whole family shed many tears for their doggie angels over the years.

The two sisters Heidi and Gretel were black-tan. Gretel lived to the ripe old age of seventeen. They were the first two sausages to become angels.
From there on, the family only had Dachshunds:)

Slinky came from noble birth, even had papers, and his real name was Sir Slinky of Oaklands.
A love affair between Sir Slinky and Sammy produced five puppies: Slinky Jnr, Sammy Jnr, Tinkerbell, and Skye were all adopted. The only one to stay from the time he was born, was Teddy. Skye returned to the family after a period.

Dachshunds are prone to back trouble, and Slinky needed a back operation, but recovered well after some TLC. It's not so easy nursing a doggie who doesn't understand!
Sammy sadly died of heart failure. Sounds just like us humans, right!

Lucy was abandoned by her previous owners, a young couple, and found by their landlord, locked up inside the house without food and water. She was in a bad state, but recovered after some TLC. She sadly got liver cancer and also developed Alzheimer's; yes, apparently, dogs also get it! She was acting strange, would get confused, cry, and shiver at times. She had to be put to sleep; a very sad day for everyone. She was the last one to pass on and join the other doggie angels.

As Lily and Crusoe tell them:

They still talk about you.

My nephew lives across the waters, and also has two Dachshunds. He is always buying little 'sausage' gifts for his Mom when he comes home:)

Yes, and only the best food will do, no junk food!

There are many works of Dachshund art in their home. My nephew even ordered a Dachshund birthday cake for Mandy's milestone birthday.

He sends the doggies birthday cards with a gift;)

Mandy is involved with Animal Antics, a NPO run by a vet in the Outer West region of Ethekwini, passionate to find a suitable home for neglected, abandoned, and abused dogs.
Back to the home of Crusoe and Lily, there's a telltale sign that gives away you just how things are done ;)

Where the humans pay the bills, but the Dachshunds run the house!

Oh my goodness, I read this post and it reminds me once again how our beloved pets suffer from illnesses just like us, it breaks my heart, well I am so sensitive because my little dog is sick right now.
Thank you for your publication I really liked the sculptures of the dogs and it is always good to know that there are people who are in charge of protecting them and giving them a home ❤️

Hi @carisma77, so sorry to hear about your little dog. I hope he gets better soon. Yes, they get a lot of similar illnesses just like us. I didn't know about Alzheimer’s though.
My sister-in-law is passionate about helping neglected and abandoned pets find a good home.
Thank you for popping in🤗

Bonitas mascotas, cada vez que veo a un perro salchicha me acuerdo de la canción, "perro salchicha gordo bachicha..."
