A'stumblin and A'flyin Christmas

Guess what? I survived Christmas!

The onslaught of holiday guests in our my AirBnB always is daunting.

When December arrives, it often is accompanied by noisy party groups that have to be handled tactfully, something my sweet man was really good at. He always managed to get them to turn down the volume, and I'm not just referring to the music!

Fortunately, since changing my marketing strategy to emphasize tranquility, our BnB no longer attracts revellers. However, reading messages on our local BnB WhatsApp group, one cannot help but be apprehensive. Some of the BnBs have had more bad experiences this year, and are considering closing down between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

I block out New Year's Eve, and only allow direct bookings from returning guests for that night, which some see as an excuse to go wild! I really am not a party pooper, but there's a huge difference between having fun and being unruly!
I've lost count of the number of telephonic requests for accommodation from 31 December to 2 January, obviously people looking for a party venue!

We now mostly have family groups who are an absolute pleasure to host, and of course, we had our wedding guests who stayed for two weeks. I was invited to that wedding, as they are regular guests who have become like family.
I was dreading going on my own for a couple of reasons; I would not have my very own VIP by my side, and the venue was close to the bustling beachfront which makes for chaotic traffic and parking!

I decided to Uber, which was a breeze, and made me rethink whether it's worthwhile keeping and maintaining a car now that I'm flying solo.
If I were to go on jaunts, I certainly would not go on my own, and can always Uber to friends, the shopping malls, doctors etcetera. I however will not be hasty and will bide my time with that decision.

The wedding was a real treat, it was a sumptuous Hindu wedding, and the outfits were an absolute feast for the eyes. The bride's outfit was painstakingly sewn by the Mom.
The father of the bride has a heart of gold, and shed more tears than anyone else. Of course that got me wiping away my own tears as it was only four days before what would have been our 49th wedding anniversary.

Starters were sweetmeats and traditional Indian savoury snacks, of course my sweet tooth could not resist the sweet treats.

The buffet supper consisted of a vast array of fragrant spicy dishes, and delectable creamy desserts. I took every remedy I had for heartburn when I returned home!

Proud Mom and Dad

Christmas day was a wonderful time of togetherness with loads of laughter, and some reminiscing which prickled the tear ducts, but all in all, a really lovely day. We did a Secret Santa, I drew the number one ticket so got to choose the first gift, and afterward, everyone had a load of fun with swapping gifts. I however held on tightly to my fragrant candle!

My sister-in-law fooling around with my son

It was a lovely cool day, a welcome respite in the midst of a hot and humid summer, and when the mist started coming in, as it often does up high in Hillcrest where my brother lives, we knew it was time to make tracks and get back home.

The pizza oven still has to be christened, so I'm looking forward to that!

As far as the happenings at our Airbnb, we I have two upcoming long-term bookings for January, which really are the best, as guest changeovers require a ton more maintenance, so I'm looking forward to a laidback start to the year.

The image I shared with you at the beginning of my post is a very special gift from a 'daughter from another mother'. She also gave me a piece of sandstone that looks like an angel, and a pack of gift cards, all her own design, and the Cape Town beach-in-a-bag containing coarse white sand that is mostly tiny shards of sea shells and rock, plus sea shells she picked up. Some are whole, and some have been battered by the ocean, just like we experience in life.

This bowl of sea shells and the little angel will be visible reminders of unforgettable memories, most of them holding memories of my darling man who was very dear to Angela, my angel 'daughter.'

Thank you @the-lead, the same wishes right back to you. Once the guests leave after new year, I can heave a sigh of relief, as I'm down to only one staff member, and that's on weekdays only! I'm on duty over the weekend but only do minor tasks.
Let's hope for a good 2024.

Wow the wedding looks absolutely delightful, as they normally are with Indian traditions.

Christmas a big uphill to push through, glad to hear you managed a laugh and a tear, healthy healing, with loved ones surrounding you on the day.

Stepping into 2024 with decisions to be made, always take one day at a time, my younger sister finds Uber suits her fine to move around where she lives inland.

It was a beautiful wedding and one thing I forgot to mention is that a youngish widow that I had a long chat with while in hospital, was at the wedding, turns out she is the groom's aunt. Small world hey!
Christmas was bittersweet but Arthur would want me to get on with life, and I can, with the help of loved ones!
I'm seriously considering doing away with my own wheels. The amount of driving I do doesn't justify all that cost. We started using Checkers60 for most of our grocery shopping during Covid, it's convenient and stops on the spur buying of snacks etc.
Thank you Joan for your wisdom and encouragement always xxx

Time moves so quickly one has to somehow keep up. Meeting folk in places you least expect a good indication of how connected we all are.

Memories will be carried with us for the rest of our years with loved ones. Now to move forward making decisions for yourself as to what suits you best moving forward.

Have a wonderful day, always one day at a time.

Oh lord, I couldn't fathom renting a place for New Year's. Seems like a recipe for disaster (unless you know the people to be reliable). So glad Christmas went through alright for you. It's really so heartening to see your #healingjourney, my dear dear friend. And I'm inspired by the way you manage to find reasons to celebrate and grasp ever and always the beauty in life. May you never cease doing that <3
A smile and a hug from me to you!

PS: Imagine sewing that! What an effort of love.

A recipe for disaster, that's for sure. One of the guesthouses had some extremely unruly guests last year from our ruling political party, yep, and they became very aggressive when asked to quieten down! An awful situation. Our current guests asked for an extension till the 2nd, but they're a family and are really nice people.
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words @honeydue
As for that stunning intricate bridal dress, apparently the Mom sewed well into many nights to complete it. They have so many functions, starting days before the wedding, and were dressed in different stunning outfits for each occasion. The cottage looked like a dressing room!
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, my friend, and that 2024 is going to be a very good year xxx

Yep! It was a hard one for you to overcome, but like the champion that you are, you simply pulled through and now it's done. Your man and mom Lily will be proud of you for not blowing out the candle and pressing on. We are also proud of you, and life goes on.
Angela and Marian have a great love of seashells, and Marian does her art with them in the garden.
Here's an example :)

Take care and all of our !LUV to you!

Thank you Zac, it's also thanks to you and Marian that I've been able to pull through.
You need to share some of Marain's artwork with us, that is just so beautiful!
Angela lives in Cape Town, they were in Melkbos Strand but I think they moved. She is a super-talented young lady!

Thank you, Lady Lizzie, prayer costs nothing, because no money can pay for it. It is however the very best weapon in our arsenal.
I know that Marian is busy with a picture book, and I will get hold of it one of these days !LOLZ
She is busy marking the degree students exams now, but I don't know yet where she keeps her book.
Maybe we will meet Angela some day.

Thank you, dearest Nicky, seeing the old year out was more difficult, I suppose it's because one thinks of the events of the year gone by, but I do have some very good memories and that's what keeps me going.
Hoping that 2024 will be very kind to you and give you strength during the little bumps in the road xxx
