Your favourite hot spring from Yellowstone

Today, I'm going to do a photo dump of some of the amazing hot springs from Yellowstone National Park in America. There must be hundreds if not thousand of them here. Some are just tiny cracks, others are massive, like the world third largest as you'll see in a minute. I have tons of photos, and here's just a small selection where I've managed to match to their correct name. That was quite a challenge to do!!

I thought I'd also try out the new poll function from PeakD to see how that works. When you get to the end of the post, why not vote for your favourite hot spring. I may even have a surprise for one voter later on 😉

So here we go....

Ear Spring

What a creative name, but I wonder why they didn't call it the Bean or the Kidney 😉. Actually, I'm more impressed with the overflow or whatever it's correct scientific name is, than the actual spring here. Different types of organism lives in different types of springs based on the temperature of the spring water. At Ear Spring, the water is over 92 centigrade. Not sure what lives here, but it's spectacular, that's for sure.

Blue Star Spring

Not quite a star shape, but maybe it was when it was first named. The geothermal features are living features constantly changing the landscape every day. Although it's lost its star shape, it's still a true star in my opinion.

Grand Prismatic Spring

The Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest spring in Yellowstone and the third largest on the world. It's 370ft at the widest point and 160ft deep. That's massive!! The only downside of such a massive hot spring is that you can only get the best view from higher up which involves a hike that I didn't do because but was so cold. And because it was so cold, as soon as the hot air rises from the spring, it creates a layer of steam on the surface. I must have came here three or four times during my stay at Yellowstone in the hope of catching a glimpse of this most popular spring, but sadly it just wasn't meant to be.

Double Pool

Not a lot or say about Double Pool. I included this ... just because I like it 😄

Heart Spring

What a very romantic name but you do need to stand at the correct position to see the heart shape. It took me a little while to find my heart here 💖

Cistern Spring

We normally think of bacteria as bad for us, but when visiting natural springs we love them because they're the badass who thrives in these boiling water conditions creating the amazing landscape.

Fountain Paint Pot

The Fountain Paint Pot is a mud pot. Imagine a massive bowl of boiling water bubbling on top of a stove, then you have some heat loving microorganisms called thermophiles inside that eats the gas, producing acid. The acid then breaks down the rocks creating a big bowl of mud and what you end up with is this lovely pot of Fountain Paint Pot. Don't you just love how nature works.

Sapphire Pool

The Sapphire Pool used to be a geyser until an earthquake in 1959 changed its plumbing system (yes, that's what they call the workings underground) and now it's a hot spring. Unlike the Ear Spring, the overflow here is dark green and is due to the different microorganisms present at this 71 centigrade water.

Emerald Spring

True to its name, the Emerald Spring has this beautiful emerald surface that is so clear one can see quite deep into it. It's very difficult to take a clear shot of the inside of the spring, especially being quite far away. But seeing with my own eyes was pure joy.

Green Dragon

Sometimes you get lucky. When you're at the spring at the right time you may get to see some action. Here at Green Dragon it suddenly released some pressure creating a layer of steam across the surface. This is one of the few springs that we can get quite near to but of course, no one in there right mind would ever step too near to the springs!!!

And here's all the Yellowstone hot springs I have for you today. Let me know which was your favourite one by voting in the poll below.

Look I even have a picture of the Blue Star springs (my vote) from 1998.

Grand Prismatic is also really impressive!

Wow! 26 years, it's great to see the difference, the left side has definitely widened over the years.

I'm so gutted I couldn't see the Grand Prismatic. The staff says it's not visible in winter because it's so cold, that's when I gave up hope

I found a picture from 2014 of the Grand prismatic spring. YAY

Very cool. That's such a neat spot and they all look really interesting. it's hard to choose just one.

This is just a small selection of what I saw during my stay here. The park is massive, and we stayed here for three nights, the longest at one place during our trip

Of course you couldn't miss Yellowstone!!! It must be amazing to be in that place. I like all the hot springs, but I left my vote for Fountain Paint Pot. Thank you for sharing that amazing trip 🤗.

I very much love these things but haven’t seen one in real life yet. Do they smell?

I think it depends on what substance lives inside and how much sulphur is present. These ones didn't really smell. I remember when I went to Iceland, a few smelled like really bad eggs, likewise in New Zealand

I’ve often heard people talking about the smell of sulphur, rotten eggs as it were. We encountered something like this at Vesuvius, where there was a little activity on the day we visited.

They are all cool. The Grand Prismatic Pool must be awesome, maybe if you had a drone you could see it - without hiking to a higher spot. I also liked the Blue Star... difficult choice for the poll, but my vote goes for Emerald Spring :)

If you ever see a poster of the Grand Prismatic you'll see how stunning it is, so I imagine drone would be really cool, but sadly they're not allowed inside the park.

Wow! They are all amazing. I vote for the sapphire pool.

I would love to go to Yellowstone. Can't help but think of the dumbass people who put their hand in boiling hot springs though 🤷‍♀️ despite the signs.

Lots of stupid and selfish people around. Some throw stuff in, like in the very early days of the park, some idiots threw massive rocks inside one of the spring choking the poor thing. And then there was a massive eruption, there was so much pressure that it threw up the rocks.

Ahh, I remember this one! If I'm not wrong, many years ago when Pinmapple hosted some sort of contest with a dream place to reach on this globe, this was part of it. Nature is just too amazing not to have it constantly part of one's bucket list :)

I've gotta go with Emerald Spring since I am a Michigan State fan. They are all beautiful though. I think my mom and dad skipped Yellowstone in favor of Glacier National Park when they took their trip out west a while ago. I hope to hit both of them some day!

We didn't go that far up north. But I just googled it, it looks stunning. It probably wasn't a bad idea to see the glaciers first, you never know how much longer they're going to be around for.

By the way, what's the relationship between emerald spring and Michigan state? 🤔

Michigan State University's school colors are Green and White. If you ever do make it back to Glacier, my mom and dad highly recommend driving the sun road (I think it's called).

Voted for grand prismatic.. 😊 it's good to stay here in winter season..

Most of the park is closed in winter because of the high altitude and snow. Some of the roads were still closed when I was there, it's pretty difficult to imagine how snowed in it still can be in May unless you see it with your own eyes

Definitely Fountain Paint Pot.
This beautiful bright color certainly warns living creatures about the danger it poses to them, considering the acids in the water that melt the rocks.

The array of colours in the different springs were remarkable, quite difficult to catch on camera to be honest, unless you're a pro

They are all beautiful in their own right but I was drawn to the Grand Prismatic and the Emerald one. Wow what a great experience seeing such beauty.

It certainly was, especially when I had no expectation at all. I mean I had heard of Yellowstone before, but deliberately didn't check in internet on what there was to see. It's nice to have a surprise, I think

The Fountain Paint Pot has the most deep blue tones... absolutely gorgeous! It was very difficult to choose only one. Thank you for sharing this great set of amazing photos!
