Glam Beer Therapy in Dubrovnik, Croatia

When we arrived in Dubrovnik after Hivefest, hubby found a craft beer bar in the old town and was keen to visit it. It was very near to where we were staying, he liked it so much that we ended up going two nights in a row. The bar is called Glam.

Glam was established in 2010 and it's a pretty small place with probably 5 tables sitting 10 to 12 people inside, plus a few more tables outside. On our first night there, we were recommended the Haze 14, 5.2% ABV. I liked it. The beer is produced by Dubrovnik Beer Company, not sure their relationship with Glam but we were told it's their house beer. Glam started in 2010 and every year they give their beer a different name, that's why this year's is called Haze 14. 2020 was their 10th anniversary, and they had the poster up in the bar.

Hubby choose the Scheneider Weisse, it's a wheat beer at 8.2% ABV. He said ever since he had a very nice Japanese wheat beer some years ago, he's been trying to see if he can find an equally nice one. This one didn't make the mark.

For his second beer, he decided to try out the local craft beer. C4 was recommended to him. It's a 6.1% ABV 80 IBU beer, and called C4 because of the four hops - citra, cascade centennial and chinook - used in the brew. His verdict was that it didn't disappoint but didn't have a wow factor either.

As hubs was enjoying his second beer, I busied myself with taking photos of the colourful beers cans. They make a great photo journal. I find craft beer cans are always very photogenic.

We went back the next day evening to try out more beers. Hubs chose to the San Servolo, it's a 5.1% ABV. He can't remember why he chose this one and can't remember anything about it. Guess that sums up his verdict of it.

I was undecided between two craft beers, based solely on their colourful cans ☺️ In the end the guy from Glam suggested Summer Mode 4.1% ABV 14 IBU. It was a very nice refreshing beer, and to be honest, I'm not too fussy with me beers. Plus it was 14 IBU and very easy going. That's the other thing we learnt here, IBU. We hadn't come across this before. IBU is a measurement of the bitterness of beer, ranging from 0 to 100.

With this new bit of knowledge, hubs decided to try the highest IBU beer, the High Voltage 6.5% ABV 100 IBU. It's called High Voltage as the yeast ferments at a higher temperature, presumably giving it a more intense flavour. He was very satisfied with his choice.

Overall we enjoyed our time at the Glam. It's a great little place with a lovely vibe and not noisy, and the guy there, although not the chatty type was very nice. My only complaint would be the price. I get it draft beers are more expensive than normal beers, but quite a few of them were well over €10 for half a litre, and if I remember correctly, the most expensive one was €15 per half a litre!!! If you're ever in Dubrovnik and fancy a good place for a drink, I'd recommend the Glam. Just watch your wallet 💸

This looks like a really cool place. Craft breweries do have some of the best cans! I can't do high IBU beers. That is pretty much what a lot of the places are going to over here and I am not a fan. It all tastes like pine needles to me when it gets too hoppy.

Pine needles? They're quite fragrant aren't they😉?

I'm not a beer drinker either, so prefer lighter citrusy beers, it's much pleasant and easier for me.

I usually stick with lighter beers or dark beers as well. Anything IPA is probably a no go for me.

That's a lovely place for me :)
I know most of these Croatian beers, and I can say they are good, but I would never pay 6.90€ for this San Servolo...

I think people tend to get carried away when you're on holiday and often pay over the odds for things

But yeah, it was expensive 😖

Yeah, all beers are expensive, but that's not that. This San Servolo is one of the worst beers I have ever tasted :)

I don't think I've ever tried a beer with that high an IBU. Not sure if I would like it or not.

Cool can designs on some of those. Fun and colorful

Actually I forgot to try his High Voltage, I'd probably find it too bitter as well. I normally prefer fruitier beers

This looks like my place, beer therapy! What a creative name. But the designs on the cans look amazing and I would drink them just because of that. But I agree with you, those prices are something else. Beer is good, but not that good. And I love the high IBU beers, we have some crazy ones here in South Africa as well, going beyond the 100 IBU mark (but if I understand it correctly, your tongue can only taste up to 80 IBUs or something like that). Thanks for sharing!

The beer cans are certainly a very good marketing ploy for first timers, but if the other elements aren't up to scratch the whole product fails, I do wonder how well it does overall. If I was home, I would unlikely to try this because if the price. Tourists are very gullible, aren't they 😉

For sure! I always look for the beers that are not too pricey. Sometimes, some of them are good and worth the price (high-alcohol beers cost double to make so double the price is reasonable). But when it is high priced just for the sake of making money, I try to avoid it!

I guess those beers in a can are more style over substance, draw you in with promises that don't deliver, bottled beer I reckon is far superior.

For me, bottled Coke always taste miles better than canned ones, I guess the same applies to beer as well

I'm indifferent with beer, it's more to go with the atmosphere. Are you a wine girl? Or teetotaler?

More of a teetotaler. Barely get a glass of champagne on new year eve haha

I see that everyone goes their own way. And then you pass the info to each other. Hahaha... what a genius you are!
You look like you've been drinking with him.
Do they sell combos with cakes? I see on the menu something about cakes...

Cakes?!! How come I missed that? 😭
They open in the morning for coffee but I didn't get up that early to check it out.

Glam made me think of glam rock ... but damn at those prices it might not be glad but scam!

The cans are photogenic you are right, I just the hope the beer was worth it, but when we are on holiday prices don't matter as much quite often!

Interesting to see an IBU scale of 1-100 and hubs trying a beer with a 100, I guess the scale needs enlargening?

I was in Dubrovnik in 2010 but not sure if I ever made into Glam. Glad you both enjoyed it though.

Hubs is always on the lookout for good beer places when we go away as he likes to try the local stuff. Think he was ok with the High Voltage, hope he's not turning into an alcoholic 😂

Your hubs choice is fine and I like the name of that beer high voltage. Moreover, the environment is also beautiful.
