Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2026

The other week, I attended the Bristol Balloon Fiesta in England. It's the largest hot air balloon event in Europe and the second largest in the world after Albuquerque in America.

The site

The event is free, and each year around 300 to 500 thousand people attend over the three day fiesta. I went on a Saturday and it was packed with people. Some people came very early in the day. They bought picnic mats and chairs to grab a nice spot to see the hot air balloons ascent and other performances during the day.

We arrived around 4pm for the 6pm ascent and managed to find a spot in front of the center launch area where the balloons take off. Soon after, it was impossible to find a vacant dot of grass to sit on, and the late comers could only stand. By the evening the organisers were advising people not to come as the site was at full capacity with around 100 thousand people.

The fiesta is held in an 850 acre historic country park. I took us around 15 minutes just to walk from the carpark to the actual event area. The event area is over 100 acres, that's like 50 to 60 football pitches big. It included the central launch area, the viewing area around it, food stalls and entertainment area etc.

I wandered around the site. Everywhere was jam packed with people, including the toilets of course.

RAF Falcon

There were various other performances during the day before the main balloon ascent in the evening. This is the first time I've seen the RAF Falcon perform. They are the Royal Air Force parachute display team who jump from a plane and freefall up to 120mph (nearly 200 km/h) to perform various manoeuvres and display in the sky. Imagine you're floating in the sky, surrounded by the unpredictable British weather, a can of coloured smoke tied to your ankle, and you have to manoeuvre in position with the rest of your team, not too close, not too far away, to create these amazing displays in air.

Then you have to wait for your turn to land. Every member of the squad got a massive cheer from the crowd when they landed at the exact spot. Including the last and most senior member, the flight lieutenant, who also had a Union Jack strapped to his ankle, landed safely. It was one of the most thrilling performances I've seen in a long time.

Evening Ascent

I've been to the balloon fiesta quite a few times in the past and posted about my first visit in 2018 here. Since then I've been back a couple of times but unfortunately haven't been able to see the ascent. Hot air balloon is very weather dependent, and being by the sea adds another level of risk in case they get blown out and have no where to land. Normally, we won't know till the very last minute if the ascent will happen. There are two ascents each day during the festival, morning and evening. Morning is the best and has more balloons but it starts at 6 am which is way too early for me. Luckily this year, 5 out of the 6 ascents were successful, with just the very last one not being able to take off. That must have been so disappointing for the visitors as they now have to wait till next year before they can see it.

Back to the ascent. We got front row seats to see all the hot air balloons getting ready to take off. The launch area could easily fit 30 balloons at the same time and it got quite busy. In total 60 hot air balloons were due to ascend. Everybody was ecstatic when the first balloon finally took off, then gradually they all left one by one. Personally, I felt it wasn't as good as the first time I was here. Maybe the first time for everything is always the best. That said, it was still a freaking awesome experience. Here's a photo dump. Enjoy

Nightglow

The highlight of the event, and something that I've never done before is the 9pm nightglow. Most people leave after the 6pm evening ascent, as I have in previous years. This year I decided to go the whole hog and watch the nightglow.

24 hot air balloons are inflated and tied to the ground. Seeing so many massive hot air balloons inflated together was really impressive. Plus we were had a koala and a lion balloon right in front of us, providing a perfect photo opportunity.

The balloons are lit up in sync with the half an hour music program, like a hot air balloon concert. I didn't really know what to expect beforehand, but once the nightglow started, it was absolutely electrifying, with everyone joining in the massive dance party. It was definitely one of a kind unique experience and a great way to round off the day.

You made 11 comments within 13 minutes, that looks very much like spamming because it is impossible to read and digest all 11 posts and make meaningful comments within that time. My post has over 800 words, yet you managed to read it 2 minutes after you made your previous comment.

Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2026 looks amazing.

I've never been but I really want to go now, looks like a bucket list type thing, epic!

This guy is easily my favourite.

Now just imagine if there was a Balloon there with a big shiny HIVE logo on it, and a team of people handing out invite cards, I wonder how many new users could be onlined during such a publicity event!

Might take you up on that offer, looks like some day out! Never went for a ride in one before, that would be even better TBH.

A Hive hot air balloon would be awesome wouldn't it😄

Yes, yes it would. The exposure would be sublime, basically ninja advertising. Looks like easily thousands of people there, all taking photos to immediately post online all across social media, and imagine right in the middle of it, a big shiny Hive Logo 😍

Wow, everything you describe and what I see in these photos is massive—and beautiful, too. It sounds like an incredible experience; I don't think I've ever seen hot air balloons in person in my 38 years—maybe we don't have them around here—but I’m always fascinated when I see them in videos or photos. You mention such huge crowds, so I think you were lucky to find a good spot to enjoy the show that day; I was struck just by the photo showing the line for the restrooms! The balloons are stunning, and I love that glow they have at night. Even though we don't know each other very well, the way you enjoy life and seek out new adventures is inspiring to me. That’s how everyone should be; regardless of the ups and downs of daily routines, we all need to allow ourselves new, enriching experiences. No matter where we are in the world, we have to create special moments for ourselves. I loved this post—sending you a big hug! 🙏

That's the beauty of Hive isn't it... we can bring the world closer to other people so everyone can see and experience more of it. Glad you enjoyed it

That's a lot of people. We have a hot air balloon festival in my hometown each year too, but I don't think it draws nearly that many people.

We get a lot of visitors from far away coming every year. The last few years I invited friends from London over for the weekend just to see the balloons but on both times the ascent was cancelled which was a bummer for my friends and I felt sorry for dragging them over 😖

Haha yeah, I can see how that would be kind of a bummer. I remember when I used to live in down you would always just have random balloons floating over your house on that weekend. You wouldn't really even know it either until you heard them run the burner.

These balloons fly to the direction where my cousin lives and one morning she got some amazing photos of them flying over her house, lucky her!

Wow what a show. It looks amazing and in Bristol no less. I had no idea it was so popular.

We were gifted a hot air balloon ride by our kids on a Virgin balloon a few years ago.(2013 I just looked it up)

It was just us in a field lol. I've got a blog on the flight. It was a bit tricky 🤔😂👍

Update. I tried to find my video on the search engines and found nothing. Luckily I'd posted it on our blockchain so it's still viewable here.

That's the real power we have here.👍

Using the exact title of the blog it came up 2nd in a Google search!

Thanks to your blog I've learned something new about search on Hive.

My sister was gifted one from her kids the other year as well. She's not a big fan of these adventures, but enjoyed it very much.

I heard our SEO is pretty weak and a lot more can be done to make it better, plus it's so difficult to find an old post on Hive especially if you've been around for a long time. The best tool I use is quite old and the dev is inactive, but luckily still works

It was a bit of a mission to get in and out of the balloon. Our kids were horrified when they heard.

I think they thought we were still spring chickens.

Yeah search needs some work on Hive. What tool do you use?

Wow, that is quite a large event. The balloons are so colorful. I don't think I would enjoy being in such a large crowd, though. Going up in a hot air balloon was one of my most exciting experiences.

Wow! Where did you go for your balloon ride? I've never been before and wouldn't mind, but currently it's not on the top of my bucket list as I'm still worried about the height, not one of my favourite things

Here in Colombia, we have some towns where you can enjoy this kind of activity. I haven't done it myself, but I've seen that some have a family design: a logo that represents their last name. They choose it and put it up. Here I see felines, and I like how they look.
Thanks for sharing; I liked your post.

I've never seen a Hot Air Balloon other than up in the sky and in the distance, but I bet they are pretty fascinating! Had no clue there is a festival of this kind, but I'm really excited to find out about it, thanks to you! ❤️
BTW, the one with the cow is my fav! Haha

That is pretty spectacular, one that I have been meaning to do for years but always been too busy. Though after seeing the hordes of visitors tbh I don't think its for me, from traffic queues pee pee queues and mass encampment and then the mass stampede to leave. I think I would lose the plot
