Bridges and weddings at the most eastern point in Taiwan

avatar

Today we're going to the most eastern point in Taiwan, to see the Sandiaojiao Lighthouse. Before we go there, we're going to make a pit stop to a place called Fulong.
20230203_125226.jpg

Fulong is a beach and like quite a few places in Taiwan, I don't really get it . I don't know if it was because I came here on a grim day, or whether the location isn't that appealing. This is Fulong Hotel, and it faces the sea, which perhaps in summer, would offer fantastic views. They even have a big Starbucks, that's the building with the blue top on the left front. It's was awfully quiet when I was here.

The main attraction in Fulong is this footbridge. I have to admit it's a pretty neat and makes a nice stroll out towards the beach which itself is quite unusual.
20230203_125037.jpg

Fulong beach faces the Pacific Ocean, if you draw a straight line you'll get to Mexico 🇲🇽. The waves are strong here and apparently it's popular with surfers, perhaps the vibe is very different in the summer. The other thing with the waves, is that over time it has created this strip of beach that extends underneath the bridge, maybe if I return some years later, the beach would have connected to the mainland on the right.

The beach from the leftand right side of the bridge

It was so windy when I was here, and when I got to the end of the bridge the beach was sort of closed. I remember seeing a sign somewhere to that effect, and a trolley was placed in front of the bridge on the beach. I wasn't planning to go on the beach anyway as I didn't fancy getting wet sand all over my boots.

Our next stop is Sandiaojiao lighthouse or Sandiao Cape as the information board calls it. Jiao means corner in Chinese.
20230203_134622.jpg

20230203_140038.jpg

In the old days this area was called San Diego, named by the Spanish when they ruled in the 17th century. Sandiaojiao is the localised name from the Spanish one. The area here is pretty large, and apart from the lighthouse, there's also a radar.
20230203_135739.jpg

Here's the radar, and some sheep 🐑🐑😁
20230203_140143.jpg

Not only that, there's also a little chapel, and some heart shape structures, and a gazebo. Random and odd? Not quite, if you notice all the structures are in stone white and there's a beautiful backdrop of the sea. Apparently this is quite a popular Instagram and wedding shoot location, some call it Greece here 😉

20230203_132328.jpg

The most eastern point in Taiwan is actually an observation deck less than 200m away. You can see it from the lighthouse.
20230203_132516.jpg

20230203_132727.jpg

We strolled across to the observation deck and saw the coordinates marked on the ground. I made sure I pinned this post exactly here on Pinmapple 📌🍍
20230203_133525.jpg

Here's looking back to the lighthouse and radar station
20230203_134122.jpg

And panning a little further across from the radar station, is this image which I find quite interesting. You have the radar station - modern technology, then there are the graveyards dotted at the base of the hill - belonging to the local villagers offering good feng shui, and then there's a fort outlook in the right. I'm not sure how far back the fort dates, I couldn't find any information. Anyway, I just thought together they offer a view of three very different objects from different different period and culture but all coexisting in the same location.

With the popularity of Facebook, Taiwanese love a good 👍 pose when taking photos. Someone must have figured in case you can't see one's 👍 clearly, why not erect two massive ones!

What did you think if this trip? 👍 or👎

Well, what a beautiful place, those gray landscapes with the brown tone of the sand make great photos, I love the sculptures that the tour has, it looks like a place of tranquility.

There was hardly anyone around, guess that adds to it's tranquility

The bridge is beautiful, but it could have appeared more beautiful if not for the gloomy day. I like the second place - the Greece-like. It's a big 👍 for me.😃

This place is interesting. The bridge is quite grand for a footbridge and really unusual. This is my first time to see a bridge built to cross to a sandbar..

Same for me as well, it's a very nice walk on the bridge, quite long but not too far up, and with the slight curve is nice for photography

I really like this kind of places. For its tranquility and i think that the radar that tranquility is appreciated. I suppose that when the tourist season is at its peak, this place must be crowded.

Thank you very much for sharing !LUV

I would think so too, because that part of Taiwan is very popular with local tourists

Fulong looks like a nice enough place, but I can also understand your feeling of not getting why it's famous. I wonder, is there a famous novel or poem about it? So often I find in Japan there is a famous place that only seems so-so or underwhelming to me and I wonder why it's famous, but then I discover it's because some poem was written about it a thousand years ago or it featured in a famous story.

The lighthouse looks neat enough. Why sheep though...? And why is it Greece? Does it look like Greece? And why a chapel? I have so many questions about this one... Random and odd is right.

Now that lookout point, that is cool. I love that view. I could take some great photos there with my dslr.

I touched up one of the photos for you to make it a bit more dramatic. Hope you don't mind.

I think I read somewhere on the internet it was the setting for a TV series or something, you know how creative the pros can be, they can make any rubbish ugly location look stunning, just like how you have touched up the image, it really makes a great difference! Thank you!!!

Kinda odd mix of structures, if you ask me, but the Taiwanese loves these random things!!

This post took me into a long search of the area, which, by the way, was fascinating. It is interesting to see all the articles, pictures, and information on the lighthouse and radar station. The fort? Nada!

No matter how I asked for the Sandiaojiao Fort, Taiwans extreme East Point, San Deigo... Magang fishing village, Blue Greece... Nothing. I am not sure I have ever come across that. Even the pictures I have of the area are devoid of it. Ha! Yet, you have proof positive.

What are they hiding??? Just kidding! I just found it so funny. Google doesn't know everything and good think you marked it!

Lots of these places in Taiwan don't have English coverage on the internet as English is still not that widely used even though they've been talking for years to officially make English the second language. Glad I can add them on the blockchain 😃

Wow! Only less than half a year ago!! I think the weekend I was there was just after new year, people probably went out too much over the holidays, plus I remember that weekend was awfully cold, even my friend said it's extra cold by Taiwan standards

I don't know why but I've always been interested in lighthouses. I just love their architecture and I could spend time next to one for hours. Maybe it's because they are so rare in Romania or because of seeing too many movies containing them, but I do like these buildings :)

Just checked the map, you guys don't have much coastline and it's only towards the Black See, no wonder. Lighthouses are very unique, so lonely but important, their function is so simple and even with modern day technology, there is no better or effective way to replace them.

Yeah, you are right. There are like 1-2 lighthouses from what I know but they are very hard to be reached. You can only see them from a boat ride on the sea or something like that :(

You took some very nice seascape and landscape shots on this trip. I know too well how challenging it can be to take decent pictures in cloudy weather but you did a really good job there :)

Wow! Awesome! This place has many interesting structures like that dome like building and the views are spectacular.
I would love to walk on that footbridge. Looks quiet and peaceful this place.
