A hoard for a whisky gathering

It's been many months hubby and his drinking buddies ie my brother in law's has had a whiskey session. To make up for lost time, they ended up bringing a hoard to our last dinner gathering. To be fair, three of the bottles are from the common pool owned by the three of them, then they each bought one or two and that's how they ended up with 8 bottles on the table. I have to say upfront, they didn't all drink 8 drams each!! But let's see what was on the table that evening.

Johnny Walker Blue Label 40%

The first one they all tried was the mildest one at 40%, the Johnny Walker Blue Label. It belonged to one of my brother in law, H. At £160 (yup it was expensive!!) hubby would never buy it but he's happy to try it 😁. He's not a fan of big labels, particularly expensive ones which he thinks are over rated.

I took a sniff followed by a little sip. It was quite easy on the nose and acceptable to my palate.

My other brother in law, K, had a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label that cost £25 so the guys decided to do a blind test for fun. The result? Hubby and K both said the Black Label was nicer 🙃

Thompson Bros, 6 years blended 46%

This is the first whisky from Thompson Bros and was produced from crowd funding. Hubby only found out about it after the crowd funding was finished, but was able to get a bottle on the open market. It's proved to be quite popular in general, and also with the guys tonight. Hubby has put his name down for the next round of crowdfunding. It was one of the two favourite of the evening.

Nobel Rebel, blended 46%

This one is quite unusual as it's matured in a red wind casket. Maybe that's why it was very smooth on the nose. They all liked it despite an it being quite smokey. Hubby was particularly impressed with it. It was the other top two favourite of the evening.
1000036668.jpg

The Laddie Eight, 8 years single malt 50%

It's was obvious this was a stronger whisky. The aroma was quite intense and smelt a little fruity to me. Hubs didn't enjoy it straight, then he added a little water and they all agreed it was a lot better, nicer and smoother.

And for completeness, these were the other ones available that evening.

Port Charlotte, 10 years single malt 50%Ardnamurchan, single malt 46.8%
MacLean Nose, blended 46%Ledaig, 18 years single malt 46.3%

I think Hubs didn't drink them all that evening, or at least I didn't see him drink them. It gets very busy with 9 tables on the table, I'm surprised they remembered what they drank! I'll do a review of these in future when I get a chance, but if you're interested in the Ledaig, you can read my post from last year here.

That is a serious love of whiskey indeed. £160 a bottle sheesh, I doubt if I could tell the difference between that and a £6 Lidl special.

It's good that they all have a common interest, but since everyone is getting on a bit now, they all have to be very careful with their intake. Like you, I can't really tell the difference between the expensive and cheap ones, but I have tried some that are smoother than others.

it isn't a drink I would choose tbh, Jack Daniels wins every time

keep up the good work

i keep it simple with whiskey , i prefer the one with honey and the other bottle has been slowly used in coffee only mostly in a a small Espresso during winter .

i bought them in Germany since it's a lot cheaper over the border 😜

I think I may like the honey flavoured one, but a whole bottle would last me a life time or two!!

You should check out my previous post on the Bushmill 😊

that would be a lifetime supply for me , the whiskey with honey is very soft to drink it's almost as if the honey was made with apis bees ...😎

Never mind the men Miss Innocent LUT😅 I wonder if you didn't dip into your hubby's collection:

It gets very busy with 9 tables on the table...

You see, you've given yourself away😅

Impressive collection, sounds like they had fun!

woopsie 😄

The three of them get a bit carried away sometimes like little kids, and me and my sisters have to stop them. Luckily they never over do it, and I'm around to drive them home.

Wow! Great tasting here :)
I rarely drink spirits, and if I do, it's whisky. I have to remember the selection, I'll ask someone who knows.

I don't drink either, but I find it very interesting to learn about the whisky, and the stories behind them.

Yes, there is a lot of history in whisky, just like in beer, wine, or coffee :)

Sounds like your husband would be a fan of bourbon more than the other ones. You get a lot of that smokiness from bourbons, but the good ones don't over doo it. This was an interesting selection. I like that they do a pool to share the bottles and extend their budgets a little bit.

He didn't use to like smoky whisky and it's still not his favorite, but occasionally he comes across one that he likes, like the Nobel Rebel, that was a bit of a surprise for him.

They started the pool last year, as they mainly drink together so it makes sense to share between them, especially when hubby finds some interesting whisky and thinks the others may like it.

I wish I had a group of people like that. My one friend who used to really enjoy whiskey can't drink it anymore and my other friends aren't as into it as I am.

The guys are starting to pull back a bit as well due to health issues, nothing serious mainly preventative when you get to a certain age

I can appreciate that!

That's quite a selection. I went to a whisky tasting on my cruise and after a few glasses I wasn't too with it :) The local whisky bar does tasting sessions and I've been to one of those. If I buy a bottle then it lasts me ages, so I don't taste too many generally.

I can imagine the cruise may have that additional effect on you

Surprisingly hubby doesn't like doing tasting sessions. One, we don't have any good bars around us, and two, he thinks they don't offer very good value. He doesn't don't on his own often, I was checking the photo of the Ladaig from my post last year compared to this year, he hasn't drank that much, but then he does have a few more bottles 😄

I think it's very beautiful and chic when people drink whiskey. I can't drink it, I always feel sick. Oddly enough, I drink cachaça and I don't feel sick, but whiskey is a certainty.

I had to Google to see what cachaca is. I like sugar cane juice but never drank spirit bad from it. It sounds interesting and probably very good to make cocktails

Cachaça is perfect for cocktails, but my main focus is on beers. I only drink cachaça when I visit specific friends. Now, whiskey, my friend, for some reason, just doesn't go down well. !BEER

surely you guys had fun and a great time, that quality liquor is very attractive and tasty, however, it is a real bomb for the liver and kidneys.

It's very true, the damage it does to your body. Luckily they are not big drinkers and know to look after themselves as they start to have minor health problems that come with aging

In terms of Smirnoff Vodka, Red is the cheap shit, Blue - better and Black the Ultimate. I don't know if 'Johnny Walker' follows the formula. I haven't seen Smirnoff Black in years, but I could drink it straight.. the others being far too harsh.

As for Whisky, I always drown in in Coke. Wasteful perhaps, but that's how I like it.

I never drank Smirnoff before, but then, I don't really drink. I imagine it's ultimate for a reason, must be very smooth.

As long as you enjoy it, no harm in mixing your drink, that's what drinks are for

Haven’t had whiskey in a long while. I do like it though and I’m fascinated by the one that has been crowdfunded. Never heard of that before, not for whiskey at least.

(Edited)

They're crowdfunding everything nowadays, and I guess with whisky, it wasn't too difficult as they probably have a loyal customer base already

I guess you have to restrain yourself with your health condition, Hope all is well

It’s not a bad option I guess, means the customers have a vested interest rather than seeking external investment.

I drink very moderately and occasionally skip alcohol but I’m allowed to drink it. They suggested I drink gin!

Such a lively and flavorful evening that must have been! I love how your post captures not only the variety of whiskies on the table. Eight bottles may sound like a lot, but as you said, part of the joy is in tasting and comparing, not in polishing them off in one go. The playful blind test between the Blue Label and the Black Label made me smile. Classic case of price not always equating to personal preference. Sometimes the simpler, less hyped bottle hits the right note for your palate. 🥃

I do something similar in my world, though with coffee, lots of tasting sessions, and experimenting with fermentations. Reading your post made me wish I could’ve joined in on your boozy adventure. Sounds like it was a great evening of flavors and laughter!

Like whisky, I know coffee can be very addictive as well and there are many coffee lovers around the world, and on Hive. I don't know how to appreciate coffee either, I'm more of a tea person, but I went to a tasting session many years ago and it was very interesting how the different type of cup you drink from can affect the taste of the same coffee

A fine way to spend an evening! Totally agree with your hubby about Johnnie Walker! Of course, if someone is offering you a free glass it would be rude not to, but otherwise... 😌 Noble Rebel sounds interesting, I'll have to look out for it. I just found out the blender has won awards for his single malts: https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/feature/noblerebel

it would be rude not to

ha ha! and even more so in Japan! But seriously, hubby was glad he'd tried it at last, because he said it's one of those whisky that people talk about all the time, but not many people buy. He tends to stick around the £30 - £50 mark, because there's a lot of very good value bottles around.
