Welcome to The Asseltse Plassen, a recreational lake ~ in Swalmen, the Netherlands 🇳🇱
I will take you on a sunset walk along this beautiful lake, its islands, the little port, the Normans (882AD) info sign and show you one of the many walking routes around this area. We will see also some people canoeing into the sunset and some stunning dramatic clouds in the ever changing sky during our walk. Come and explore this recreational area with me today. It is very peaceful and you feel truly one with nature.

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk #challenge. That is hosted by @tattoodjay every week on Wednesday.

Location of the Asseltse Plassen in Swalmen we find on the following screenshots of Google Maps :
IMG_6413.jpeg

Zooming out further, as you can see it is in the south of the Netherlands. Between Belgium and Germany.

For more information about this recreational area - The Asseltse Plassen in Swalmen have a look on the following page: Hart van Nederland - Asseltse Plassen.

As you maybe know I recently drove in my van from southern France back home in the far north. On our only stop in the Netherlands for the night before heading into Germany. We stayed on a great parking lot (all alone without other cars or vans) not far from this lake between fields and the river. We could easily walk after dinner to it to explore.

When we first arrived in the area, we stopped quickly for a few photos from the van 🚐 next to this waterside location. It was 19:30h in the evening. I just had to capture the views too.
IMG_0043.jpeg

Towards the right:
IMG_0044.jpeg

And straight ahead.
IMG_0045.jpeg

After the photoshoot of the van haha (I will share one day) we drove further to the parking spot I know. About 3 cars can park there. There are bins and benches.
I made us a nice dinner on our camping stove. While sitting and enjoying it my view of this large cloud coming fast over the parking area.
IMG_0046.jpeg

See we were all alone here for the night.
IMG_0048.jpeg

Around 21:07h we got ready to go on a walk. The sun was setting slowly in the distance. Our views over the fields and little country road.
IMG_0049.jpeg

Beautiful sunset over the trees.
IMG_0050.jpeg

Closer by… yes… we will see it go down on our walk if we look back a few times.
IMG_0051.jpeg

Next to the little road while walking towards Asselt we see this little river. It bends around next to the road.
IMG_0057.jpeg

See… it goes further. It doesn’t go under the road.
IMG_0061.jpeg

Let’s check the sunset. The sun is behind some thick clouds but not fully set yet.
IMG_0063.jpeg

In the distance we see the sun just peeking out under the clouds.
IMG_0064.jpeg

There it is visible again. As we wander further over the little road between fields.
IMG_0066.jpeg

A few farm houses appear on the left side. I see these cute moose 🫎 on the gate. Haha very ironic to see them here in the Netherlands. Where I live we see them walking the forests and on the roads but definitely not down here.
IMG_0067.jpeg

We finally reach the Asseltse Plassen. The large recreational lake. I see a little boat and some canoes in the middle of it. It looks like the people are exploring the water ways and paddle between and around the little islands.
IMG_0069.jpeg

I zoom in on them. It is getting darker as you can see. I like this photo. The lighter area in the middle makes it special.
IMG_0070.jpeg

I look if I see the sun, but it is fully set now. Our views are stunning over this lake.
IMG_0071.jpeg

We are enjoying the peaceful area. Just look at the beautiful clouds. The reflections of the sky in the water.
IMG_0072.jpeg

Zooming out more again… a welcome walk after driving thousands of kilometres.
IMG_0073.jpeg

We arrive at the area we stopped with the van. We see this large crane for the fishing boats or just boats? Not really sure.
IMG_0074.jpeg

We wander further and see the canoes caught up with us and go down a small water section. Do you see them?
IMG_0075.jpeg

Let me show them better to you. It must be great on the water this late, during sunset. Observing the wildlife.
IMG_0077.jpeg

I see the sky is getting a little pink in the distance. I so love these cool colours. I could sit along this water side for hours and see the world go by…
IMG_0078.jpeg

We walk further and reach a little port.
IMG_0081.jpeg

Along its promenade we see this cool mosaic bench.
IMG_0082.jpeg

Looking closer at the mosaics.
IMG_0083.jpeg

The front is awesome. The sailing boat sailing into the sun.
IMG_0084.jpeg

Behind us we have this view of a little building that resembles a ships bridge. Maybe just in my mind haha
IMG_0086.jpeg

We walk further along a walking path and come closer towards the port.
IMG_0087.jpeg

Suddenly along the path we see this:
IMG_0089.jpeg

I capture the top of the monument.
IMG_0090.jpeg

It has information in Dutch, German and English.
IMG_0091.jpeg

Close up for you to read.
IMG_0092.jpeg
I didn’t know this was here and that you can follow an entire route to learn more about the Normans that were in Asselt in 882AD. Maybe next time when I am around… who knows.

One look at the little boat on the grass next to the little port.
IMG_0095.jpeg
We are heading back now as it is getting late. It is 22:00h and we still have half an hour walk back to the van. We say… bye bye until our next walk.

…and here I say that’s all for today’s post my friends.

The views of the fields as the sun goes down are beautiful, conveying a sense of peace and serenity. Then the walk takes you to the water and the boats, another calm view with reflections on the water that become more pronounced as the sun goes down, especially the clouds, it's like a duplicated landscape.

I also loved those colourful mosaics and the journey into the past through the large signage. It was a beautiful walk, thank you very much!

What a gorgeous view, sunset in an all alone spot 😍
Our world 🌎 is so amazing, those views of the sky in the distance are priceless. Getting to enjoy all these in nature from your van taking you places is tops 👌
Good the information on the monument has tree languages, I can't help but notice English is shorter compared to the other two.

That spot was just awesome. The views amazing and the clouds just that little extra that made it magical. Our world is indeed amazing.
The van lets me discover even more places than before.
Yes, it looks so much shorter. I saw that too. Most of the time I see english is shorter than the original language with signs like this. Especially here up north. It is a small summary.

Have a fantastic day Joe
I have been taping squares on the kitchen floor. Tomorrow I paint them anthracite. The base coat has 2 layers of light grey paint. It is coming along well. Just keeps me busy busy haha
