Welcome to “L’AQUEDUC SAINT-CLÉMENT in MONTPELLIER ~ FRANCE” 🇫🇷
Today we will walk over the large city square “Place and Promenade du Peyrou”. Past the beautiful statue of Louise XIV on a horse, towards the Château d’eau du Peyrou (water tower). Once we climbed its steps there to go behind it, we can see the aqueduct much better. Believe me… the views over the city of Montpellier there are stunning. After enjoying all this we will walk down more steps and wander along the aqueduct a bit to see it from a lower ground level, capturing all its stunning details. Come along and join me today.

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk #challenge. That is hosted by @tattoodjay every week on Wednesday.
‼️Have a look: Here in the Wednesday Walk Community if you want to join in!… the community is run by @tattoodjay

Today’s photographic selection will be of 24 PHOTOGRAPHS
Date : 3 MAY 2025
The Photographs in this post are taken with my iPhone.
I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are experiencing all of my adventures on this walk, to #discover everything what I saw, like the little #details seen through my eyes.

Location of the Aqueduct in Montpellier we find on the following screenshots of Google Maps :
IMG_6319.jpeg
As you can see it’s close to the arc de triomphe.

Zooming out we see its location in south east France, close to the Mediterranean Sea:
IMG_6320.jpeg

More information about the Aqueduct you find on the following webpages:
On Wikipedia in French - Saint-Clément Aqueduc.

On Montpellier tourisme in French.

On Visitacity - Aqueduct from Montpellier! In English.

The above website tells us the following information:

The aqueduct is 880 meter long and about 22 meters high. The arches over the aqueduct span about 3 meters while the larger arches are nearly 9 meters. It also features a masonry bridge dating back to the 18th century.

More information about the Place royale du Peyrou you find here: Visitacity - Place royale du Peyrou

More information about the large Statue is available here: Equestrian statue of Louis XIV in Wikipedia
Do have a read as it is nice to know a bit more about these historical landmarks.

Shall we wander around to check it all out now?
Great… let’s go!

As we walk over the large square we see in the middle of it right away the large statue.
IMG_8297.jpeg

A plaque with more information:
IMG_8298.jpeg

Seeing the statue with horse. What a great day… bright blue sky, no clouds make it stand out a lot.
IMG_8295.jpeg

We walk further over the square. On both sides there are tree lined areas for shade in hot summer days. As it is spring we can walk through the middle where no trees are. We see the chateau d’eau. On each side there are stairs you can climb.
IMG_8299.jpeg

It is surrounded by water and right before us we see a sundial on the ground. You stand on the month it is and your shadow tells you the time. Yes, I tried it out and it was correct (if you count the summer time change of the clock)
IMG_8300.jpeg

We walk to the right side and half way climbing up the steps we see the aqueduct.
IMG_8305.jpeg

A plaque with more information about it in French.
IMG_8306.jpeg

The aqueduct is behind a very spiky fence/ gate. It isn’t open to the public anymore…
IMG_8307.jpeg

A bit further more obstacles so you can’t go further if you managed to get past the gate. Sadly vandalised… you do see the views over some of the cities neighbourhoods.
IMG_8309.jpeg

We walk a bit further to the left side of the gate… and try to capture the aqueduct better. Hhhmmm not that great views of it.
IMG_8311.jpeg

Just have a look at how spiky the sides of the gate are. You surely don’t want to be caught with your leg in that…
IMG_8312.jpeg

As we wander slowly down some steps that go lower than the square we came from. We can see the aqueduct better.
IMG_8313.jpeg

Along the way down I saw this beautiful wooden door.
IMG_8314.jpeg

At the bottom of the steps we can see so much more. Great! Let’s discover it all.
IMG_8315.jpeg

We stand for a while to take in these stunning views of this landmark.
IMG_8316.jpeg

There is a sign from Jean Moulin.
IMG_8317.jpeg

It tells us;

that this is the spot of the most famous photograph of Jean Moulin and it was taken during the winter of 1939-1940. A hero of the Resistance.

Zooming out a bit.
IMG_8318.jpeg

From this spot we look towards the left.
IMG_8320.jpeg

We wander along it and there are more steps to go down further. We see the aqueduct even closer by now.
IMG_8321.jpeg

Looking behind us we see the Chateau d’eau.
IMG_8322.jpeg

As we reach the bottom we walk on the right side of the aqueduct now.
My favourite photo from it today:
IMG_8323.jpeg

I love the green trees… they frame it well.
Zooming in on the top part.
IMG_8324.jpeg

And further along the aqueduct. Stunning isn’t it?
Yes… it is worth wandering much further along it to see the best views.
IMG_8325.jpeg

If you ever visit this city. Don’t stop at the water tower. Walk down many many steps… you can see so much more from it.
There are also some cute bars and restaurants… with a weekly market under the aqueduct that is nice to visit.

…and here I say that’s all for today’s post my friends.
Join me next time for more updates, adventures, #stories and photographs.
Even my own artworks, once in a while, will come by.
Thank you so much for looking, and reading.

Het is inderdaad een mooi land. Veel te zien en toch genoeg natuur over om de drukte te ontsnappen.
Je houdt niet van de fransen?
Dankjewel 😎

Gorgeous day 😍 love the aqueduct! I am an engineer and am perpetually amazed at ancient engineering. We should always be humble when bragging about modern technology.

Really… an engineer. Me too. So I know how you feel.
Somedays I think how could we have lost the ancient knowledge… structures that still stand and I see modern builds collapsing on a daily rate in Malta. Crazy…
Have a wonderful Friday!

Beautiful structure, it's good that it's preserved.
And I've learned where this famous photo was taken, so I'm going to bed less stupid tonight 😀
Have a lovely day

Somedays we learn something we didn’t know about exactly where a photo was taken. I like discoveries like this. Especially when one can stand in their footsteps… although many many moons ago. Happy that I could share this.
Thanks! Have a lovely day too.

What a nice walk. I never imagined that Montpellier was so beautiful. I remember passing by it by train on a trip through the south of France in my 20s. But never thought of stopping there.

And how cool about the clock and that you checked that it does indeed tell the time.

Have a lovely day, Jackie!

Thank you, it was a lovely walk.
The thing that surprised me most was the amount of trees and green everywhere. So different than the south of Spain.

I like sundials… this was you could participate in and check the time. Made it even cooler. A shame I didn’t let hubby take some photos haha 😝
Thank you so much. Have a beautiful day too.

The blue sky behind the horse definitely made the shot great. It is nice when the weather is in favor of our shots 📸
The spiky gate is interesting 🤔
I like the shots of the aqueduct too very beautiful 😍

Nice walk Jackie

The sky was just perfect that day.
The fence/ gate was very discouraging for people to jump across.
Thank you Joe

Good evening Jackie
Yeah sometimes we encounter barriers that makes our photo shots difficult. You did well regardless.
