With this post in our lovely #community this Friday for the #MarketFriday by @dswigle - Denise I will show you the moving truck and some of the movers that brought our belongings π¦π¦π¦ππ all the way from Spain πͺπΈ to Scotland π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ for our #countrymoveβ¦ πΊ
Keep in mind we hired one company that had movers in Spain and the UK and would provide up to a month storage.

These 12 photographs are all taken with my #iPhone π€ on 22 January 2023 π±
The 17th delivery got delayed due to the bad weather conditions and 30cm of snow outside βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
No car would have been able to drive up or down, let alone a heavy moving truck π¬π
This track up doesnβt get cleared by gritters or snowploughs.
So the first day we knew it would be melting and raining π§οΈ the #moving #company π started their journey up from #London. They arrived in the evening of the 21st and delivered in the morning of 22nd.
π₯³ Finally we are reunited with our belongings after more than 1 monthβ¦ of our #adventures being on the #road. And our belongings being in #storage in #Malaga #Spain and than London UK π¬π§

First 1 little truck came up the hill⦠this was a 18m3 truck, maybe even smaller⦠I thought there would be 2 trucks again or 1 bigger one as our belongings are about 20m3.
Nopeβ¦ βthat was itβ, the driver said π€
Keep in kind we have 95 boxes π¦ in all different sizes and about 70 loose items πͺππΌππΊ

The driver #struggled to get the little truck up the hill and the last bit towards the front door was rather steep. He wanted to leave it as isβ¦ on a slope. π«£π¬
I went to him and said this was dangerous, as soon as you start unloading, the truck will roll down the hill. Please put it straight lower down.
He did listen to me luckily π€
The driver got out and introduced himself and said; today my wife is helping. Weβve never been up in Scotland.
So he thought it was a good idea to show her.
Ok, I thought⦠why not. But where is the other truck and 4 guys that will move our belongings inside?
He saidβ¦ itβs just us.
π³ Pardon meβ¦ really? So you know how this is going now. π‘
Of course we had to help to get all inside as the driver was doing it all by himself. The wife was in the truck pulling the items and boxes forward.
Ggrrrrr not funny with a truly bad back. π But sometimes there are no other options and you have to deal with it right there. Stuck into the chores.
So hubby and me helped to get our stuff inside.
Our sofa had to go to the first floor as the living-room is upstairs and bedrooms downstairs. ποΈ
It was heavy and large so the 4 of us really struggledβ¦
Due to the kitchen being upstairs too, most boxes had to go up too. π¦π¦π¦π¦
Let me show you the further photos now and talk about them.
See he went a bit down the drive way. For safer conditions while unloading. π why would you risk your lifeβ¦ right?
I see the truck is truly fullβ¦
I asked him if everything would be there. He said 95 boxes and 70 items would be all in there.
Ok⦠we will see if all that is in there. As normally we would be moved in 2 small trucks. As it is 20m3.
Half wayβ¦ π₯΅
I see the sofa was put up on its side in the corner and all is squeezed around it. π£
And by squeezed I mean squeezed/ squished/ squashed⦠see the box? (Boxes)
And another oneβ¦
And more and more show up damaged.
Such a shame that they were not so careful.
And of course fragile stuff would have to be in those squished boxed π typical.
Yep, glasses and bowls etc. kitchenware basicallyβ¦
So we ended up with broken items.
Not sure where this happenedβ¦ the move from the rental house to the warehouse in MΓ‘laga Spain, the transport to the UK, putting it in the warehouse thereβ¦ transporting it up to Scotland π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
Did it even go into a storage facility?β¦ at this time I am questioning all π
Over 20 boxes were damage at the end. And some items were bent or dented.
Havenβt talked about my airbrush compressor yet. Against all what I said. Not to transport it on its side. Guess whatβ¦ it came sideways. Let me tell you it had the most obvious stickers on there to warn what side upβ¦ on all sides β¬οΈβ¬οΈβ¬οΈβ¬οΈ
This is a silent compressor that runs on oil. I had drained it. But there will always be something in the system.
Sadβ¦ I havenβt been able to test it yet. π«£
As not sure if I will be airbrushing here or in our next place π
My art studio is still fully packed into boxes and I havenβt unpacked them yet. Soonβ¦β¦

I must admit they were very friendly and nice⦠and did work hard together with us.
After they left the house was a bit messy hahaha π€£
This rental house came fully furnished so we have to put our belongings along side of the ownersβ belongings. I make it work! πͺπ»
As with all services and things you buy. Sometimes it doesnβt go always like you think it would.
ππ¦ After almost 50 movesβ¦ in 6 COUNTRIES πΊοΈ now, I am prepared. π€
But it is still not nice when things do break and they canβt be replacedβ¦ π

Wow! I know that one should expect some hick-ups and damage while doing a move like this...but wow...squashing a load into a truck that is clearly too small for the load. And as you say (and clearly visible in your photos), clearly marked as FRAGILE and what side should be up...Let's rather leave it there, I'm sure you don't need to be reminded of that...
Luckily the driver listened to your advice about where to park the truck...but one would expect an experienced driver to know that?
Anyhow, I'm glad he was friendly and that he had the opportunity to take his wife along with him. Sorry that you all had to work so hard. How is your back now?

It was cringeworthy to see it come out of the truck in that state. And how they just pushed all in there, knowing it wasnβt big enough (the truck)
I was glad he did as I could see an accident happen how he had parked. Imagining the more got out the more it would hang down. Tumble downβ¦ nope didnβt want that.

I can imagine what you must have felt like seeing your stuff like that. I just hope your airbrush compressor didn't get damaged...!
The truck tumbling down...? No! I don't think that would have been a nice ending to your journey! It's a good thing you spoke to the driver.
Rather take it slow for now and give your back some rest and time to recover. I am also battling with lower back problems and hip problems from old sports injuries. It's no fun as you get older... Rather take good care of yourself. Moving as much as possible and following a good, regular workout program helps a lot, but you still have to be careful. I've been able to avoid being operated on by doing just that...but I guess what I'm trying to say is...rather be careful and take great care of yourself.

I just had to talk to him.
Will take it easy with my back. I have trapped nerves due to scoliosis. I know what movement and which things I can do and what I shouldnβt be doing.
Definitely not moving boxes.
Somedays my back is fine some days it isnβt and I can hardly walk.
I found out over the years what works and indeed keep moving and the walks I do, do help. Donβt sit down all dayβ¦ nope.

Yep on the insurance⦠you have to cover the cost up until a set amount.
The broken items donβt reach it. The compressor alone might. But we also only had 24 hours to report it. Can you imagine going through all 95 boxes and 60 something loose items to check.

You are right. I am here after over 3000 km journey. With an epic road trip from a month. It was worth it. We saw so much.

I'm glad you got your stuff, but sorry to hear some of it may have been damaged. You can always claim - these companies usually insure your goods so are responsible for them arriving intact.

Yep, I know, I even had an extra insurance. As it went into storage and was needed.
You know, we actually were preparing to move to the US, to the New England area and Massachusetts in particular. Thatβs why we went there on an exploration end of last year. To find the spot to move to.
The company from hubby was relocating us. We were preparing that for over a year⦠the paperwork took forever with the backlogs of covid⦠but suddenly the company was taken over and all changed last October. So all our plans had to be adjusted. And quickly.
So we were looking what country would come close to what we loved from the New England area. And guess what, Scotland had it all too and even more. No idea why it never was on our radar before. The climate is even more temperate, not so extreme.
We love nature, the 4 seasonsβ¦ oh did we miss thoseβ¦ the possibilities of walks, history, architecture, castles, the friendly people, sea and mountains, the diversity in the landscape, English language, hubby can work remote for the new company out of the UK. (What plays a large role too btw he was made redundant with the other one in Novemberβ¦ after us preparing to move to the US for them hehehe π€) hubby is British I am not, Iβm Dutch although born in France. I have never lived in the UK before. This is a first and it is country number 6 for me.
Life changes⦠but all for the good.
We did also outgrow Spain for many reasons, I lived there for 7 years and hubby 15.
It changed too much in the last years. The climate in the south gets so extreme now, the houses have no insulation. Holiday is fine but living is another story.
Hubby was also a cross border worker in Gibraltar. And it got worse and worse to cross the border each day due to Brexit. You can imagine. So the old company wanted us to relocate to the US, we thought yep. Itβs time. All changedβ¦
Whatever would have happened. We would have moved out of Spain.
On our trips we did also fall in love with Scotland. What is not to love?

That's crappy with the 24hour thing! π³ You would think they would give a month as a minimum! So crazy - but these shipping companies are (crazy)!
I am "Very Thankful" these days (am always, but...) I recognize the things that have happened.. Especially since I quit my job and working for good on February 28th 2021 - and somehow things worked! ππ»ππ»ππ»

And I got my license straightened out, for a few - but I don't care! In the end I am happy I had the money to pay it! ππΌπππΌ
So...
Two weeks ago I had a cold, pretty bad, sinus swelling all that... Well after about a week it has run it's course....
Then "Wham"! At about the end of it - from coughing I jerked my neck somehow and messed up a disk.. Well that took another week to get right and was "worse" than the cold!
I am sorting things out, and thinking about the move...
And...
They have me scheduled for x-rays, MRI, and anything else - so we will see what's up with the congestion thing!

Let me tell you what happened last weekβ¦ I got finally the outcome of my residency application. Keep in mind. They assisted us what to do and what to fill in, in certain questions. So we followed their advice and help. They refused my residency π³ on the grounds what they filled in. And said the deadline passed. You are to late π
βpardon me?β yep, they said all that even though they said I could still apply and when to and whatβ¦ so SIGH a lot of things happening as you can imagine. We need to rethink everything and we will probably move countries again in the next monthsβ¦ againβ¦ and I just unpacked 95% gggrrrrr
They should just have said in November you probably are too late with the application. They fully misinformed us. If they would have said that, we would have gone to our next option right away. We lost so much time now⦠and money⦠ah well⦠such is live. We need to move on and get everything sorted out again in the next few months.
Luckily I know the drill but it still hurts. As we are giving up something amazing here, the raw nature around us. I will make the best of it all given the situation. Try to visit what I really want to see before we leave again. Next to a lot of paperwork, planning a country move again and packing up againβ¦

I think now, their loss⦠we could have added so much to the state, I was never a burden to anything.

Yep, you understand. Crazy world we live in. Nowadays the service isnβt what it used to be. Even if we pay extra for it, it never means we will get it.

Even though negative things are around you, you wonβt let them affect you in the same way anymore. Now so much changed, you got help and many things done. It followed each other one by one. Puzzle pieces falling into place ππ

They, themselves donβt have immigration lawyers. But had advisers. And they advised us wrong π
So after contacting a lawyer and going through everythingβ¦ with extra cost of courseβ¦ we know our options. Not much left. I only can buy us some time, what I so need right now. Donβt want to leave in 30 daysβ¦ 2 weeks of that is already gone.
So filing a reviewβ¦ the waiting time on an answer is 6 month + so there is the time I need to sort everything out and make our next step. It gives us 6 months in this beautiful country. Also it gives me some time to explore what I always wanted to see. Next to organising a country move again hehehe π€

Yep, You watched it all! And You are so right! Things came out of "left field" - literally! And I am so Glad when I called about the "Govt. Mandatory Health Insurance" that guy pointed me in another direction!
He literally changed my life, all the way around! When he advised I call the VA instead of doing the maybe thing with the County to help pay for the mandatory insurance.
Yep! I am going to go to all the appointments! As long as the Doctor keeps to our "agreement", I'm fine! Actually, (going to fast forward here.. he he he!) I called the VA this morning (they called first, seems they call me everyday between 8-9a.m.) and they will get me a place(apartment, etc...) "here"! ππΌππΌππΌ I am Soooo Amazed! I really had no idea that I was entitled to all this!
And....
Due to the environment here, they are going to rush it as much as possible as the lady told me "this" living environment is adding stress to my life. I agreed..π
Now that is Horrible! π³π±π³ But something similar once did happen to me, though not as severe..
First, yeah - state workers often steer people wrong, and are not accountable.. Bad...
I am hoping that You get a better plan over the six months, and finally find a home! π‘
Constantly on the move is not good and also not good stress- wise!
But I do think there maybe something to the six months thing, I do know what You mean.
I hope this juggling does somehow work with Your Hubbies job.

The last weeks have been crazy to say the least.

I so hope everything is still going fast and all the things they promised are coming true.
Did they find you a new place yet?
Hope the doctor kept to his agreement. And the VA is still on top of finding you a place.
So you can move out of your situation. And she is rightβ¦ it adds so much to your stress. Stress you sure donβt need in your life.
You need a place for you. So to recover and live. π
Guess what, we will be moving sooner than later. How it looks like I will be moving 8 May. Hubby will be moving mid July.
I need to move before I am here 6 months. That way I only have to do taxes in one country⦠otherwise it would have been very complicated. Also my bank is being annoying now I am in the UK. They never should have left the EU.
Hubby canβt move sooner due to work.
But he will take 2 weeks holidays and brings me over⦠we spend 2 weeks in the new country on holidays. Works 1 week from hopefully the rental or an Airbnb and after that he will go back to the uk and I stay.
We cancel the rental here end of April. So we have moversβ¦ I am still arranging as we speakβ¦ to pick our belongings up then. Then we go to hubbyβs mom. Stay a week. Go overβ¦ and he goes back to his momβs place after 3 weeks until mid July. Itβs all so complicated. A real mess I tell you.
But we work something out. πππ» I will make it work. This all is taking my full day until the late nightsβ¦ π€¨
Iβm trying to get a rental from afar againβ¦ in a country that has a housing crisis worse than the UK. π³
The amount of emails I send out, filled in so many forms for agencies⦠only a few came back.
Tomorrow we do speak to a landlord (private) for a nice house, cross your fingers she likes us π€π»π€π»π€π»π€π»
We are not sure if work from hubby can continue as of now. Still waiting for a reply as it will be complicated.

I know have "3" Free Health Insurances!
VA, The Government mandate (they nust went ahead and gave me all but a small part for free anyways π€·πΌββοΈ), And for retired Military - with my choice (not theirs) of any Doctor or care I want! π ππ
For life (the rest of it, anyways), and All Free!
I went from un-insured to over insured!
Since my Doctor Visit, I have also had blood tests, X-rays, and ultrasound, all if it! Wow! π€―
Next housing,
So I talked with them about New Jersey, I was down to 21 on the "crappy apartment" list there (no choices!), then went nack up to 38 - in NJ!
So I talk to the people here, they tell me they never heard of such a thing and I have been on the waiting list for (end of May) 2 years! Since they know that NJ vhecked my files in August 2021, they cant believe it!
And they (and I) think I am being "jacked around"...
No Problem! π ππ
(*Funny sidebar, if they would have done things right, I would not have been here for thing's to honestly get better...π€π€―π )..
So I am on the list here, and it is a much better deal!
Here the VA will pay for "Anyplace" in my budget, and utilities. Don't destroy the place and in a year they will let me take the rent money and buy a house!
They promise here they will beat NJ (timewise), and are promising "2-4" months at most!
This is unbelievable, because I have looked at some of these places.. They all have a pool, gym, balcony (mostly). Every one of them better than the place there (in NJ), that was a block, in many other blocks with tiny patches of brush. No balcony.
Dont get me wrong, when it was the only option I had to get away I was "Thankful". But I am just absolutely Amazed at how much better things have gotten, suddenly in a short period of time!
And... To show me it is "indeed" the lets call it "Magical" Energy...
I ended up setting in a room at the X-ray place with another guy from the VA... Along with about 50 other people... Anyways I talk to this guy and he tells me he was injured in the Army, thats why he's there...
He us also rated at 70% and has a copay over $200 for the visit...π² I am at 100% benifits and uninjured...π€π€·πΌββοΈπ
Really the apartment (or house) is the same!
So, I tell You my friend - "This Is Real"!

I know⦠I was confused and truly hurt by all this. But we need to move on.
We had this morning the video call with the owner of a rental house. Guess what⦠we got it.
She liked us right away and felt we had a good vibe. We talked about so much in that hour. It was nice.
So later today she send over a contract we signed and payed the deposit. As she had many others contact her everyday. We needed to rent it even before we would move over. So April the rent starts, I can only go to there in May. Luckily she didnβt mind and said she had now time to decorate it a bit and properly clean it as she said she didnβt like the cleaners she had. She lives abroad too in London at the moment.
Soooo we are happy. Even though we didnβt see the house only on photos and a few little videos.
I think it will work out as a base for a while. The contract is initially for 6 months and can be extended to 1,5 years. Thatβs when she moves back into it. So it gives us time enough to settle a bit and find our little cottage to buy and stayβ¦ ππ
I never believed this would work out. As everybody knows how bad the rental market is in Ireland.
The owner was such a lovely lady, especially as she heard I will be there alone for a while in a place/ country I donβt know. You know what she said. The owner of a grocery store, 2 houses further she knows well and her school girlfriend works there too. She said she would contact them and they will look out for me and help whenever would needed. This is a small town we will live in and the community is strongβ¦ so it does feel good. There is even a bus stop almost across the house, I can take and 35 minutes I will be in a city if I want. π so even when I donβt have a car, there is a shop and public transport for me. Itβs remote but also not as it is a village with some bars a shop a butcher and some farms. Not as remote as where I am now.
Now this week I need to sort out the movers and plan everything properly.
I have not much time to pack this time. End of the week friends come to visit⦠for 2 to 3 days, last visitors and the weekend after we go and help hubbies mom to tile the living room. We drive down 12 hours⦠stay 2 weeks and drive back. So when we come back I have 1,5 week left to pack.
I know I can do itβ¦ it just seems so hard at the moment and time is running out, really it goes to fast right now. π I will keep you posted π€
Now we hope we get good news from hubbies work too this week, somehowβ¦ I donβt feel it will be. But I keep thinking positive. ππ€π»

So "somehow" I have 3 Health Insurances for life for free. I never have to pay anything for healthcare anything, not even prescriptions!
I have things happening with this I have never heard of before! And beforehand "everyone" told me there is no way out of the state insurance when you reach 65! Ha! π I am not out, and I am not paying either!
The housing thing... Well without saying, I wont have to risk driving halfway across America - or my Cat. Along with the cost of it. Pkis getting there to nothing but what I brought, and an empty apartment. Sure I would make it work, ni doubt but this will be easier!
Ans yeah, they will beat NJ as like I said I just qent back uo their list.
The guy I talked to who is now handling this had a long talk with me. He wants me in a place (as well as the local VA) ASAP, so he told me if I feel it us taking to long, etc... Tell him! π² He gave me his vell ohone number and all. He also believes NJ is pkaying with me, but.. It came out to my advantage. And sunce I can stay out here, instead if actually living in Corpus Christi (though I would...) its great! ππ»ππΌππ»ππΌππ»
And in NJ I still had to pay rent,.just no utilities. Here it will be close to, if not zero - for all!
And Yes, also that I can convert the money they are giving me into a mortgage payment!

It is all so, so Amazing! Like You know, on November 1st - I had my NJ plan chugging in "slow-mo", and a bit worried about them taking the $200 a month for health insurance from my retirement...
"Look at all the changes since then"!
And if I count from when I quit working...
It has been just "Unbelievable"! π₯³π₯³π₯³
And really "All" coming from a place I would not have really guessed. I had figured, other than what has already happened that it was about it.
Of course finding out that I was "un enrolled", by the local office - and that NJ had actually checked my records Augusr 2021 - and nothing I should have been moving in around Your birthday (In NJ they dont know I know this - but here they do...). This probably influences my case as well - here.
I have another funny story, but I will save it for next time!π

So happy⦠finally we are there, or have been for a a while⦠until we secured the rental, we on,y knew where we would end up.
Some things brokeβ¦ we had to help bring it in. The movers (4 guys) didnβt come on this side.., we did expect they would. Just like in Spain. But things sometimes go differently.
Thatβs weird they donβt show up on your feedβ¦ thatβs a shame.
What I have done with some of my friends (you included) if you go to their blog pageβ¦ you see somewhere you can favourite them (in ecency) on the right side buttons: follow, mute and that little person. Thatβs favourite and they show up now in notifications as favouritesβ¦ when they posted a new post. Not sure in PeakD or the others etc.

Hahaha we wanted to go to Scotland after the US didnβt go through. What we were planning just over a year now, the delays were backlogs due to covid paper wise. The company was relocating us to the US. But that changed last October due to take overs etc what ended up into redundancy and no relocation. So the country that came close to Massachusetts in the things we would like there was Scotland.
So we changed our plans in 1,5 months.
The exact location was not our choice⦠just the only rental we could get from afar and unseen⦠at the moment hardly any rentals up in Scotland. Very hard to get between and lot of rules. We wanted to be in the east, the cairngorms. Now we ended up in the west and the highlands.
So far all fine and we love it here. We have this rental as a baseβ¦ for the next year to 1,5 year. We will search our perfect area, and then a little house to renovate. So 1 more move hahaha π€£
Also new jobβ¦ was remote in the UK. We couldnβt stay in southern Spain as it got so difficult to be a cross border worker in Gibraltar. Brexit related.
Yep, the change is very dramatic. But we missed 4 seasons and green nature around us. Being able to go out and walk any day in any season.
I am used to change and can adjust⦠just need to acclimatise a bit more.
