Hi all 👋🏻

Today I want to share with you a walk I did after I visited BERTRA BEACH… from my last weeks post. I stopped at a parking bay next to the road and visited “ANNAGH-KILLADANGAN” a Bronze Age #Archaeological site in County Mayo ~ Ireland 🇮🇪

This is site number 5 out of 21 archaeological and heritage sites in this area, part of the Clew Bay trail.

I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are experiencing my adventures on this #walk, to 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 #discover everything what I saw, like the little #details seen through my eyes and observe with me the stunning #scenery, #march, #archaeological #site, next to the #sea and #mountains. 😊

At the entrance there is a gate, where we find this sign.

It tells us :

While viewing this collection of ancient monuments you are standing on a salt marsh, which can be submerged with most high tides occur. In earlier millenia, however, the high tides would not have troubled these sites.

This suberb collection of monuments, probably dating from the Bronze Age, includes an oval shaped enclosure, with a fine stone row, as well as a possible stone circle, and a possible fulacht fiadh (bronze-age cooking area).
The extent of this grouping of monuments suggests that this was a major ceremonial site.

What is most remarkable about the enclosure is the stone row (four stones standing, one has fallen down), which increases in height from north to south, drawing the eye up to a niche in the eastern shoulder of Croagh Patrick. At about 1.50 p.m. on December 21st, the winter solstice, the sun dips into this little niche or kink in the mountain. At this point, the sun is directly in line with the row of stones, before disappearing shortly afterwards behind the mountain.

So interesting to read, don’t you think?
Let’s keep that in mind when we find those 4 standing stones.

Let’s start our walk from today 😊 are you coming along? You must be excited now after reading this 😊

We look around us and see a little bit of the bay.

Some great cloud formations over the mountains on the other side.

We reach the grass area and see a lot of stones spread over a large area.
Do you remember the peak ⛰️in the distance? It is Croagh Patrick.

The standing stones are hidden between the grasses…

We walk around a bit to find some of the #bronzeage #monuments

We see stones, but can’t distinguish a firepit or stone circle. All stones are spread out… a lot.

Some stones are cracked.

We see dried up areas and can imagine them full of water. This is a March, remember 🤓
Do you see the boot?

I find some pretty flowers 🌸

So beautiful, as you know… #alwaysaflower as Denise @dswigle says 😉 🌸🌸🌸🌸

The views around are just stunning 🤩

The mountain and the low clouds behind it 🥰

More flowers along the waterfront 🌸🌸🌸

Everywhere you look we see these pink flowers 🌸

We walk a bit along the waterfront…

To reach the standing stones. 😊

…and here they are. This is a different angle than the first photo/ thumbnail.
So cool… to imagine that at winter solstice they line up and you see, looking along them the moment the sun hits the mountains in a specific spot 😎

Let’s walk to that beautiful tree 🌳

I love the way it is shaped by the wind, here along the wild Atlantic west 😊

Let’s be creative with the tree and take some artistic captures 📸

It’s branches with the blossoms 🌸🌸🌸🌸

Focussing on the mountains in the distance 😉

I find a dried crab 🦀 along the shore in the grass…

And while we walk back towards the road, as we couldn’t find the other monuments… I suspect they were hidden in the long grasses… I capture this flower… braving all odds and was growing on the wall along the road 😎

Maybe next time I research and find out where the exact locations are… but for now. The standing stones and other stones that were spread out over this area… are pretty cool already. 🤓

The stones are worth finding, it has an interesting story to them. This is a wonderful spot for a walk. I like the way you got artistic with the tree photos toward the end, very lovely Jackie.

I didn’t even know it was there but stopped and saw the sign, so I went investigating 🤓 and found this. And now I know there are 20 more of these sites… all different. I will have a look around. (Once I have a car… !LOL)

What a lovely place to go for a walk. You must come back here during the winter solstice to witness sun on those rocks. 😁 The floweres are beautiful and that shot with the tree and its flowers is awesome.

This is very interesting. It makes me go back in time in my mind and wonder what it was like to live in those times!

But my mind is always busy...as I get to the 5th photo after the photo of the sign at the gate... I can't help to notice the irony... I don't know if I see things that aren't there maybe... But while I am looking at the historical scene with the stones on the ground...I look up and see the white line...an airplane making that white line in the sky? Am I right...lol? The contrast of an airplane that is so high up, leaving a mark in the sky, while we are looking at historical scenes of thousands of years ago on the ground in front of us!

I love the variety in your photos! From historical scenes to colorful flowers to artistic scenes...!

I am. We changed the plans slightly. I will fly Tuesday to him in the UK.
Do some last paperwork there and we will drive together back the 11th after visiting friends and family along the way. And a little city break of 3 nights in a very cool city, I will show when I have visited.
So yes… a bit earlier now 😎

I adore the wind swept Hawthorns of Conamara, as sight to behold. You are getting to know Mayo well. The Clew Bay area is so beautiful

Looks like a great place for a walk. I love seeing iron age stuff, so am certainly looking forward to posting more of whats in your area. Ireland has some pretty amazing iron age sites - new grange springs to mind (I think thats what its called) !
