”Let’s TILE some handmade HEXAGON TERRACOTTA TILES” ~ Market Friday

avatar

Hi all 👋🏻

Today I want to share with you what I have been doing the last 2 weeks: putting down ”HANDMADE HEXAGON TERRACOTTA TILES” with all different angles, sizes and thicknesses! (Oh the joy 😝)

With this post in our lovely #community this Friday I join in at #MarketFriday by @dswigle - Denise.

‼️If you want to know more about #MarketFriday’s have a look at the community about it: Market Friday community! run by the lovely @dswigle and her last post: “Let's Hive Thrifted by Market Friday“ where you find also the rules what to post if you want to join us. Do join in, it is fun 🤩

My 28 photographs today are all taken with my #iPhone 🤓 between 4 and 14 April 2023 📱around Stamford ~ UK 🇬🇧 in the house of my in-laws.

I had to drive down south over 2 days (12 hour drive) in those 2 weeks and back to Scotland of course… which was last Sunday.
So I had only 10 days time to work. Minus 1 in the middle for a break when I walked this walk; 🦆 “RSPB FRAMPTON MARSH NATURE RESERVE” - Boston Lincolnshire shore UK 🇬🇧 ~ Wednesday Walk 🦢

To start…

I had to seal all tiles with this “Natural Stone Sealer Breathe” 2 times. On the top and the sides of the #hexagon (VERY POROUS) tiles.
The company that provided the #terracotta #tiles had brought only half the required load by this point. So the time to seal about 13m2 of tiles took 1 full day. When you calculate around 30 - 32 hexagon tiles in 1 m2 you know this was over 400 tiles to seal 2 times. (The longer ones counted too)

You also couldn’t seal more than 4 tiles with the drying time before you covered them with the second coat. If you wait longer the second coat won’t go over it anymore.

I did seal the tiles twice: so the #cement and #grout will clean off easier once I start #tiling and #grouting. 😁

The next day I started tiling… putting the terracotta tiles down in the cement. Along the edges of the room and fireplace I put down elongated tiles.

One row around the fire place and 2 rows around the walls.

You can see in this photo the progress of the first day tiling.
The red layer underneath is an uncoupling #membrane that was glued on the cement underfloor. As this floor has underfloor heating underneath. This was done by the in-laws. So I could start the tiling without worrying about that layer too.

After this stage… the next morning the tile company delivered the other half of terracotta tiles on the front drive way. 😳 So all 500 hexagon tiles and some more elongated tiles had to be brought along the side of the house to the back of the garden into the garden shed. (As this is the UK and it rains a lot… the porous tiles need to be protected before being used)
This was hard work. As I couldn’t carry more than about 8 tiles at one time… up some steps and a few more steps at the end of the garden.
This work resulted into severe muscle ache for the next 3 days hahaha 🤣 I could hardly walk 🫣 🦵🏻

But… let’s carry on. 🤓

This is the cement I am using to put the tiles down.

More progress in the corner next to the fireplace.
You see here also some tiles have to be cut in the right size.

Fast forward a few days…

In the weekend in between the 2 weeks. I had to clean the hallway terracotta tiles with grout and cement haze remover as it had to cure before one can do so… about 14 days before the top sealer. After cleaning (READ SCRUBBING WITH A SCOTCH PAD ON YOUR KNEES HAHAHA)
I sealed the hallway with the top sealer. That was with drying time also a days work in the weekend. Hubby did help with that 😁 as he didn’t work in the weekend.

Now a view into the living room…

For the observant viewer: the other side of the room couldn’t be emptied… all furniture had to be stored there. Once this half is done fully (the one I am working on in this post) the furniture will be moved onto the new tiles.
The #oak #floorboards / #flooring will be taken up and also the sound dampening blue layer too.
Then the cement floor needs to be sealed and the red uncoupling membrane needs to be put down and the tiling can start in the other half of the room.

Here a view of the half I was working on, and yes… that large seaty was moved around all the time where I was working 😅

The area at the door. This is before the grouting.

Close to the doorway… I put down a beautiful find.
There were 3 tiles covered in paw 🐾 prints.
This must have happened while the tiles were curing in the yard of the tile company… so I layer them in a line when you come in. In the above photo also visible if you look closely. 😊

Next… the grouting. I used this:

When you grout… after a while you take it up from the tiles with a sponge 🧽 as good as you can. That’s where the 3 buckets of water come in. Keep cleaning it. Also the water needs to be cleaned regularly.

Close up… after this I wait. Until one final clean. Here I keep grouting further.

Bit by bit I continue to grout…

Here is the entrance to the living room and hallway. Do you see the paw 🐾 prints? (Yes I know tiles are still drying in this photo… look at the first darker tile and going further to the top right side) 😁

You also see here the sealed tiles of the hallway and the difference in colour with the not sealed tiles from the livingroom.

Yep… the dancing chair again 🤣

More progress in grouting…

Around the fireplace.

Here a picture of the different layers… half way the floor of the livingroom.

Dried grouting…

A lower angle 📸📸 🐾🐾🐾

What still has to be done…

The finished area… ok… it needs to be cleaned and sealed when I return.

This is the cleaner I used:

And this is the top #sealer I used. (So far this is only on the hallway) Terracotta & Quarry Tile Sealer

So what’s next?
I have to finish up packing 📦📦📦 in Scotland and move countries soon… when the movers pick up our belongings Wednesday we have 1 day to clean the rental house and put the owners furniture back in the right places. Then drive to the in-laws again… over 2 days… 12 hour drive…
To finish the other half of tiling. Right in the middle of our move. Life can be challenging at times 😉

I must say… because of the differences in these HANDMADE TERRACOTTA HEXAGON TILES the sizes, angles and the thicknesses.
It is much harder to work with, than just putting down rectangular or square ceramic tiles… it takes much more time to get it right. 🤓😎
In trying to fit a tile in a certain spot… one has to search for angles and different sizes.
But…
THIS IS THE CHARM OF HANDMADE TILES 🥰
One loves it or one doesn’t. 😎

And with this, I say “that’s all for today’s post my friends, join me next time for more #adventures, #stories and #photographs 😎👋🏻 Even some #artworks once in a while will come by” 🎨
Thank you so much for looking, and reading.

Wow, so that's what's been keeping you busy! That's a huge task and I've never seen anyone use those tiles indoor before.

Do we have to play the which country are you moving to next game again now ?

I'm so sorry you couldn't settle in Scotland but best wishes with the new move and I look forward to following your journey again :-)

Yep, indeed a huge task with a lot more involved than just tiling.
You can use them indoors and outdoors. In Spain I have seen it many times, although just square ones.
I wouldn’t choose it to tile in my house. I prefer wooden floors. 😉

Hahaha If you want to play the game? I do have mentioned it here and there already though. I won’t be going far… just a ferry ride. During the night… 8 hours. It’s the only country left at the moment hubby (UK) and I can go to without visas or anything. He because of the CTA and I because it’s Europe.

Never been there before so it will be fun, it is not much different than Scotland… on the west coast we are going. So looking forward to it. I arrive the 7th of May. (Hubby can’t move until mid July…😔)

Thank you so much, it was not expected at all.
Thank you so much, happy you are coming along for our new adventures… will definitely post about it again. 😉
Have a great weekend 👋🏻😎

You were so patient in doing the job! Thus, the effort paid off, it looks good!

Grouting, that reminds me I chose the wrong color the last time I bought during the installation of our tiles at home.

Thank you kindly @lhes 👋🏻😊 much appreciated.

Oh no… it’s easy to get the wrong colour grouting as it always dries up so differently.

As I am seeing the unfinished part I am thinking about Math as the size is hexagonal. This tile construction is complex yet it is indeed so elegant. You are so smart in fixing everything with a smooth and beautiful floor finish. I commend you for having a great output my dear friend. Job well done. Happy Market Friday!

It was indeed much more complex with the hexagons. I did like working with them.
Thank you so much 👋🏻😊 much appreciated.
Happy market Friday to you too 🌺☀️

Here in my place I usually see designs of tiles like that but they were still in squares so it is not difficult for the floor finish, and still it is appearing hexagonal when done. But this one really impressed me because a lot of Math is done and must be focused while it is being constructed. This is indeed wow and you are incredible my dear friend. Grateful of your well wishes and take care always.

Yeah, I know that it's not easy, as I have done a lot of tiling in the past. Bathrooms were always a pain to cut round holes in the tiles in order to fit around the taps and pipes !LOL
My pleasure and thanks for the thoughts.

Thanks a lot @leaky20 👋🏻😊
It was rather difficult as all tiles were a different size and angles. So it took much longer than anticipated.
Because they are also so porous and fragile… it’s much harder to keep them in a good state u til the last top layer. Soon I finish the other half.
Thanks 😎
Have a great evening!

Wow. Yes all of that would make is very challenging. I have a tiling project coming up at some point when I finish my mudroom. I'll stick to the simpler square/rectangle tiles 😆 I don't know if I could handle the hexagonal shape

0

0.000
avatar

I was thinking you would in the mud room.
You do have perfectly the same ceramic hexagon tiles… 😉 hahaha it is one of the hardest shapes to tile I heard.
I think the differences and being handmade does give terracotta tiles something special, a lot of character. Although… I wouldn’t choose it for my own house.
Give me wooden floors and I am happy 😎

They do have a lot of character indeed.
I prefer wooden floors as well but there are some areas of a house where tiles make the most sense

Yes, in the wet areas like bathrooms. Although wood would be cool there too.

This is impressively beautiful Jackie, your artistic self reflects in the tiling lol, I can tell by the way you have tiled them it requires one to be patient and can be time-consuming.
I can imagine the muscle strain as well. You are quite handy for a lady, that is awesome.
You have done most of the job so going back to finish the last part hopefully shouldn't take much of your time.

Well done Jackie 😉

Thank you kindly Joe, that’s lovely to hear. Much appreciated!
They were indeed time consuming and hard to do as all were so different in sizes and angles.

Hahaha it did hurt for 3 full days !LOL
I could build a house if I wanted. 🤓
Part of my engineering studies… and I grew up doing a lot of these kind of works along side my mom when I was a child and we moved houses again and she fixed them up. 😉

The other half is the same size… about 13m2. But it will go faster as it is the end of the house… not much traffic will go that way.

Thanks a lot, happy weekend Joe!

Wow what a great work jackie! In my place, I didn't know of a woman who do tiling. Hard labor usually done by men. So I can imagine the body pains lifting these tiles. Reat job you did there.

It is not that common here either to see woman do this kind of work. But they do exist 😉😎
It did hurt for a while hahaha 🤣

We won’t go far 😉 it looks a lot the same. New adventures await us. We have to make the best out of it. Only one country left where I (EU) and hubby (UK) can go to together without any visas right now.

Wowies!! I'm assuming this is in the new house? This is such a wonderful project 😍. You're making the space yours by adding something that you love! I get the process feels long, frustrating and meh at time, but wow it's gonna be worth it! I absolutely love it! I hope to one day make and add some colourful tiles for a wall or bathroom 🤩. First need to get the house 🏠.

Nope @misshugo 😉 it’s in the house of my in-laws. They choose the tiles too. I offered my help to do the tiling. That we are moving was all unexpected. Not planned at all. (My residency was refused)
So the time line isn’t ideal. To much happening at the same time, But when I say I do something I will.
I have 3 more days to finish packing up here. Clean the rental house… Then go back to the in-laws for a week to finish tiling the other half. Then we jump on a large ferry ⛴️ and move countries during a night crossing. 📦📦📦
Imagine this, we rented a house in the new country I haven’t even seen yet.… I haven’t even been to the new country ever 🤭 hahaha love adventures 😎 !LOL

The in-laws do love how it is looking now. Thank you so much for liking my work.
I hope you can get a home for you and do also these kind of things. I am hoping the same.
One day we will get a house of our own… 😊🤗 one day. Let’s dream big… 💃🏻💃🏻

Wow 😮 sounds like your life is a constant adventure! Ooo I'm still excited about the work you're doing 😁. You're giving a piece of time and creativity to the in-laws. Adding some nice character to their house! (I'm sure your presence is also a nice added bonus 😜). Good luck with the move, and well wishes on the journey. I'm excited to see what you'll have to share with us all.

And yes, let's keep dreaming big 🤩. I have already informed @technicalside about all the flowers I'll be planting one day. And both of us are very keen on keeping a vegetable garden 😄. Dreaming big means there is something in the future to work towards and to be excited about.

Our big dreams will come true 😊

I’m sure adding some character to their house and some fun moments while hubby and I am their 😉
Thank you so much, it will be fun to share more adventures and stories with you. As my life isn’t boring for sure.

Let’s do that. My dream is a garden too, where I will plant a forest garden… with some chickens… lots of veggies, fruits and herbs.
Your dream sounds lovely, just like mine.
Yes, something to work towards to.

So be it.
Enjoy your evening and weekend 👋🏻😊

What a great job! The handmade tiles are not as much fun as you made them look! They are hard work! We had some from Mexico, Jackie! OMG! The thickness was a huge challenge for me. That and the tiny amount of difference between some of the tiles.

I have to say that you have outdone yourself on this job! No lie, Jackie! This was quite the job, especially the challenge of having to match up, seal, grout- the whole nine yards It is sometimes almost impossible to match up perfectly,

Yikes!

I am surprised you aren't broken, woman! That is a lot of working on your knees, I hope you used knee pads? I didn't the first time, but, learned all about them the next time. I forgot that you had terra cotta and those have to be sealed a little differently than the porcelain or marble tiles.

You did such a great job and I am sure your mother-in-law was amazed at how talented you are! Thank you for showing it off to the #MarketFriday! ❤️

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Thank you sooooo much Denise for all! Found your little gift too 🥰

Nope they were not a lot of fun and actually very hard work. I still feel it and have not recovered yet. Sigh 😔
Oh I can imagine, these ones had differences too big to work with. Different sizes of 0.8cm and when you just lay them down… it starts looking wrong. So it was a whole puzzle. Even the angles on some sides were off… hahaha oh the fun.
The sealing was a lot too, before putting them down, so the cement and grout doesn’t stain them and after… so much work was involved with it.

Aaawwwww thank you so much Denise 🤗🤗🌹
Guess what, I finished the packing. Yesterday the movers came and picked it all up. Then I had to put the owners furniture back together and in its spot again.
Today is cleaning day of this place. Loading up the car 🚗 in the evening.
Tomorrow morning we start driving on our 2 day journey to the in-laws again and I have to finish the other half of the room…
Until the 6th we hop on the ferry and finally move 🚗📦
So much to do in such a little time. No rest for the wicked… hahaha 🤣 as they say. !LOL

Have the most fantastic Thursday @dswigle and enjoy!
Talk soon…

Wow! You've been hard at work! But well done! You have done a great job.

But now driving all the way back, finish your packing, return to finish tiling, and continue your move... Wow, that's tough!

I bet you will appreciate it when you can settle down after all this...

Have a great day and be safe with all the driving, @littlebee4😉👍!

Yep… a lot of hard work it was, I still feel it in my back. Think it needs some time to recover soon…

All finished the packing just in time for when the movers came yesterday. They picked it all up. Then I moved furniture from the owner back. Today is cleaning of this rental house… and in the morning we start the 2 days drive to the in-laws again. To finish the other half of tiling 😎
Seems like I have been on the go for weeks now. No time of actually except that walk I posted last week from the week before.
It is all worth it though 😁

I so need some holidays when all is done and we moved into the new rental.
Thank you so much @jacoalberts 👋🏻😊 have a lovely Thursday!

I can imagine that you will feel it in your back...

I'm glad to hear you finished your packing in time for the movers yesterday. All the best with the cleaning process today and then the drive back to your in-laws again.

A holiday after all of this sounds like a really good idea!!

You must have a great Thursday too, @littlebee4👍!

Hi my friend @jacoalberts 👋🏻😊 hope you are well.
I’m still not recovered sadly.

But we arrived at the in-laws. Saturday we start our journey towards the ferry and we will go with the ferry Saturday night to the new country.
Finally… soon new adventures will come. Can’t wait.
I did have a day off Sunday and I walked… even managed to post today about it.
Have a wonderful Wednesday my friend.

I'm well, thank you, @littlebee4! I'm sorry to hear that you haven't recovered yet...! Maybe you need to take a break to allow your body some rest...

I can sense the excitement about the new country and adventure though...😅! I can't wait to read about it!

I've had a hectic week myself and didn't manage to post as normal yesterday...don't even know if I will make it to post tomorrow either. Going to give it my best shot though! Who knows, maybe I can get it done in time...

I'm glad you managed to post about your walk! I'll head over to your portfolio soon to read about it👍!

Have an awesome day!

That’s good to hear @jacoalberts 👋🏻😊
I am… trying to rest as much as I can. I think I have 2 nerves trapped. And I know also they only heal with rest. So working towards that.

I am… so excited 🤩 just a few more days… the ferry alone is already exciting hahaha 🤣 !LOL

I hope you manage to find some time and can post. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Thanks a lot, when you have time my friend. It’s a wonderful place the castle and grounds…

Have an awesome day too.

You must enjoy going on the ferry over the weekend, @littlebee4🙏👍!

Yes, let's hope time allows me to get everything done...hahaha! But I will be reading your post soon!

I am busy catching up with replies, comments, and reading...and a few other things. Then I can start writing😅👍!

You could say so… they are very rough as they are terracotta and not glazed like normal ceramic ones.

Thank you kindly @grindle 👋🏻😊 it was hard work.
Yesterday the movers picked everything up here in Scotland. Today… cleaning the rental day and tomorrow morning we drive back to the in laws so I can finish the other half of the floor.
And the 6th we start our real move 😎

That sealing is no joke, lol. I did the 2-3 coats of sealing for our bathroom tiles that were done a couple years ago so I didn't have to pay the hourly rates for the tile layers to do it. I was surprised how much bending there was! I ended up pulling out the extra thick knee pads for that one!

Nope it sure isn’t. It’s truly hard work especially when the tiles are so porous as these terracotta hand made ones.
I had to use some thick knee pads too as it was brutal. The entire job actually.
Tomorrow we start driving to the in-laws again over 2 days. To finish the other half of the room.
Than move countries…
Yesterday the movers picked up everything here in Scotland. Today it’s cleaning of the rental house… with a bit of catch up on comments here 😉
Have a lovely Thursday and thanks for checking out my post.
