Explore with me the ROMAN AQUADUCT ~ PONT DU GARD in Vers Pont du Gard ~ southern FRANCE 🇫🇷

IMG_8400.jpeg

Come and explore with me the ROMAN AQUADUCT ~ PONT DU GARD in FRANCE 🇫🇷 It is located in Vers-du-Pont and dates back to the first Century AD. Build on 3 levels, about 50 meter high and stretches 275 meter over the river Gardon. Source.
A true engineering masterpiece. We will walk around it today, check out the view points at the sides and even cross it a few times. So we can enjoy all the stunning views of this beautiful ancient bridge. It was a cloudy day as you can see and we luckily won’t catch any rain, it is a bit windy though.

As you could read in my last post I am/ was on the road again and I probably would reach home yesterday. As soon as I could post again I would… read when I have internet and electricity to do so. Guess what; here I am as you can see… back home writing this post for you to enjoy in between washing, gardening… tending to my inside plants and catching up on so many things. As I have been away for 6 weeks to southern France and was driving all the way north slowly. It is a lot of work in the next few days. I had some crazy adventures on the road while enjoying the #VANLIFE (very basic though as it is a working van and no campervan)
I truly had a blast… and I hope to do this more once I start rebuilding the van after I moved myself and the belongings. (maybe… as nothing is set in stone for me haha) I will move before the next winter. No, I haven’t found the next place/ spot yet. Still working on it. Soon more about all of this hehe.

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk #challenge. That is hosted by @tattoodjay every week on Wednesday.

I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are experiencing my adventures on this walk to #discover everything what I saw, like the little #details seen through my eyes.

Location of the PONT DU GARD in FRANCE we find on the following screenshots of Google Maps :
IMG_6362.jpeg

Zooming out you see its location in southern France.
IMG_6363.jpeg

More information about the bridge / aqueduct and its history you find on the following websites:
Unesco - Pont du Gard France

Wikipedia Pont du Gard!
If you have time… read up on it.

Shall we start with our walk today. It is nice you are joining me.
After parking the car we walk towards the entrance and see a map from the area around the aqueduct. If you look closely you see the 2 viewpoints on each side of the pont du gard that are both on higher grounds.
IMG_8346.jpeg

We walk over the paths towards the bridge and suddenly see it around a corner. It towers out over the trees.
IMG_8349.jpeg

Talking about trees, next to the path we find this beautiful old olive tree.
IMG_8350.jpeg

Next to it this stone with more information of the tree that is from 1908. The diameter of the trunk is 5 meters. So beautiful.
IMG_8415.jpeg

We wander further over the paths towards the bridge and peek through some trees and bushes. We see a little bit more from the aqueduct now. Can’t wait to see it better.
IMG_8354.jpeg

We are very close by and take in the roman architecture. Trust me it is large…
IMG_8351.jpeg

We start walking over it and have these views to one side of the bridge.
IMG_8355.jpeg

Crossing towards the other side we see this view. So stunning…
IMG_8357.jpeg

I like the view towards the first side. The beautiful house hidden behind trees on the cliff rocks.
IMG_8359.jpeg

We can walk all the way to the other side, there is even a little restaurant located following the tree alley.
IMG_8360.jpeg

We follow a path up, climbing steps… towards one of the view points. Along the way we see the bridge very up close.
IMG_8361.jpeg

At the top of the steps there is a gate into one of the parts of the aqueduct. Guided tours will walk you through and the gate is closed when they are not there. I didn’t join, but the friendly ladies of the tour pointed me to some awesome views further afield.
IMG_8363.jpeg

Here I am on that view point. One can see the top of the bridge well.
IMG_8365.jpeg

Walking down the steps we have some great views. Yes, there were lots of tourists and even a lot of school kids on a trip. I couldn’t avoid them in my photos… hehe
IMG_8367.jpeg

I walk over the bridge again and zoom in a bit further on that house in the distance. While I was standing there I hear something…
IMG_8368.jpeg

Crossing the bridge towards the sounds. I see kids jumping into the very cold water of the river. Their school friends yelling at them to encourage haha.
IMG_8372.jpeg

Here a closer view… bbbrrrr to cold for me.
IMG_8373.jpeg

As I crossed I take in the view from this side of the bridge.
IMG_8377.jpeg

The tree alley towards the restaurant. There is also a cave located next to it, very shallow… so nothing spectacular to be honest. The real gem is the roman aqueduct.
IMG_8378.jpeg

On this side of the river there are several paths down to the river bed. As I walk down I take this capture.
IMG_8380.jpeg

The water of the river isn’t that high on this side. And we can walk over the rocks…
IMG_8381.jpeg

To get some awesome views of the bridge stretching all the way over the river.
IMG_8390.jpeg

Zooming in for details.
IMG_8391.jpeg

On top of the rocks we can see the house that was hidden better.
IMG_8392.jpeg

I take a few photographs of it. It is placed in such a stunning location, don’t you think?
IMG_8394.jpeg

My view wandering over a pathway at the tree alley towards. Slowly back to the parking lot again as we have seen the aqueduct from every direction while wandering around it and over it.
IMG_8412.jpeg

Next to the path half way back I find this (abandoned) house between bushes and behind a large fence. I think it is the one I saw several times during our walk.
IMG_8416.jpeg

I didn't see it walking towards the bridge the first time as the view is hidden. Peeking through the bushes and zooming out a bit more. This would make a lovely home. I am sure it has been or still is for maybe half of it. The right side is boarded up and looked not lived in.
IMG_8417.jpeg

We reached the car and say bye bye.
If you are ever in this area of France, do and check out this lovely place. So much to see… as the area is rather large and one can spends some hours wandering around it and taking it all in.

Thanks for the tour! I've been there, but it was ridiculously hot that day and my MS was not allowing me to function well in the heat. I didn't get to do much exploring, so it's great to hear and see your experience!

The design of the bridge is very beautiful, the color contrast also blends very beautifully with the green trees around it which successfully creates a visual that is pleasing to the eye.

Not only was it a spectacular and brilliant walk, but also a tour full of art, wonderful architecture and a lot of history, with incredible views, not only of the aqueduct itself, but also of the imposing natural landscape.

I was struck by the olive tree with its 5-metre trunk and its age! It's great that they preserve such important things in this way, both natural and historical, as well as ancient buildings. I really fell in love with the place and the beautiful photographs. Thank you for that!

It was great having you along for the walk. We saw so much. I love ancient structures like this… they make me feel humble and I wonder about long forgotten times.
I just had to include the tree. It was magnificent to see.

What a beautiful achievement of engineering that still stands today. And I wouldn't mind living in that house either, a great place in the south of France... It was such a shame that the dark ages followed all of the Roman achievements and so much technology lost for around a thousand years.

Did you know the Romans used basic physics to make water rise to a slightly higher part of an aqueduct? They figured out how to make water go uphill with nothing but some basic water chambers. I am jealous that I couldn't be there too, I love historic structures like that one. Such a shame that there aren't many of those in the US!

Awesome post!

I agree, I love to see such ancient structures. Seeing it survive after all those years. We sure could have learned a lot from them. So much knowledge of ancient “tribes” is lost… a shame.

Yes, I know. I studied engineering and see more details than most. I could watch something like this for hours, just to see what they did.
It is a shame indeed that historic structures like this aren’t more where you live.

Thank you, have a wonderful day!

Beautiful pictures! It must be an incredible opportunity to observe and touch those ancient Roman architectures, a legacy they left behind in the Iberian Peninsula when they Romanized it. The Segovia aqueduct they built is also preserved in Spain today. Thank you for sharing your story.

Awesome! That’s not that long ago.
It is such a magnificent structure. Almost hard to really portray its size in photos.

Haha I know the feeling. I travel and move a lot around and have no time to share it all… maybe one day ;) haha
Have a great day!

Wow! beautiful pictures! We've been to Pont du Gard a couple of years ago in summer. It's such an impressive structure. We went there during the summer. It was quite a bit more crowded when we were there.

Thank you. I can imagine that it is much busier in the summer. I was lucky to see it now.
I try to avoid busy places… you don’t get the feel for it when it is to busy and you have to watch your step and be careful what to photograph.

The structure is so large… hard to really show how large. It was truly impressive in every way.

Lovely picturesque shots @littlebee4
The Romans were remarkable engineers at the time. These aqueducts was instrumental in the development and growth of city infrastructure while Roman built roads enhanced commerce, communication and security.

Wow! what an impressive structure. Love the shots with the people because they really give a sense of the scale. Hard to comprehend a building feat like this 2000 years ago.

Thank you. The structure is just so impressive. Even with the people in the photo. It is still hard for most to see how large it actually is. I tried to capture its magnificent forms.
So much knowledge is lost throughout history. A shame really.
I could observe it for hours. It makes one humble.
Have a great day.

A picture perfect place full of history and stories of the past. I am amaze how it still stand until today a great piece of engineering tecnique that was meant to stay longer. I love how you took the pictures somehow it reminds of the movies I watched especially James Bond this place would likely to be a great movie scene wonderful piece of structure. 😍
