Won't You Be My Neighbour?

In early spring, the streets burst with blossom magic. What a spectacle. Throughout their ephemeral lives, the cherry blossoms shed their petals and create a gentle rain of colour in motion. There are approximately 40,000 trees blooming in pink ecstasy right now. It is truly stunning. Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, you see trees flowering in eye-pleasing glory.

I've been living in this city for many years, and I've never really thought about it before. It isn't until recently that I realized, there are a lot of dang cherry blossoms in this city. Finding them is a spring ritual for the residents. One can find maps of the tree locations and make the foray into the blooming wonderland that much easier.

There is a Japanese community that has historic roots in this region. They're the ones who introduced the trees. The mayors of Kobe and Yokohama to be precise, who gifted the city 500 trees in the 30s. What a wonderful gift! Isn't that nice? You meet a new neighbour and you say, hi, nice to meet you, neighbour. Here are some flowers. Darn straight! Very civilized.
