Storming the Beautiful Dome
My plan had been carefully crafted. I was to arrive at Science World, conduct a photo shoot of the dome, which has now been wrapped like the official FIFA soccer ball, then head inside the building where a Soccer & Tech exhibition is currently on display. I live downtown, and the easiest way to get to the science centre without the headache of driving is by Skytrain. A ten-minute ride along the swift roller-coaster rails, and you’re on Main Street/Science World, just down the line.

I rode one of the new trains for this route and noticed the station info-graphic had been streamlined. Graphic and information design are a digital alchemical mix that involves technology, art, and science. I'm always on the lookout for good examples.

The city has now been wrapped in world cup decorations, and the crowds are heavier than usual as throes of fans, locals and visitors, are out soaking in the atmosphere (and in many cases smoking it too); the vibrancy of the event is palpable.

I was getting in the groove of things as I took photographs that showed different aspects of this neighbourhood surrounding the Science World station. The sun was still out with its bright sharp light, so I decided to go inside the exhibit first and continue my photographic exploration later when the rays were more golden.

Imagine my surprise when I saw that the doors to Science World were locked. 😯 There were plenty of people milling about, but unfortunately the exhibition was closed for the day. How could this be? I had read that it would be open until 9 PM. It was around 5:30 PM. I took a look at the hours printed on the glass. Closing time was 5 PM. What? No, hold on! I pulled out my phone to double-check. Had my eyes deceived me? As it turned out, I had read the schedule correctly, except that I had read the hours during the World Cup, not the regular hours.

I would have to come back another day to do some proper learning.

I found some additional facts about this Beautiful Dome:
It is a replica of the Adidas Trionda official FIFA match ball for the world cup.
It wraps around 360 degrees and has a 40 m diameter
It consists of 131 panels placed on the geodesic dome
The project was developed by The Look Company
I hope you're having a wonderful weekend. Thank you for reading.
