Of Crows and Fun
If social media is any indication, crows appear to have a sense of humour and like to cause chaos for some strange reason. They have always struck me as mischievous and rowdy birds. Their intelligence, particularly on spatial matters, has been tested time and again with impressive results. Indigenous myths ascribe these qualities to what they consider magical beings (crows and ravens), one of whom brough light into the world (by stealing it in escapade with maiden).
I was on my way to cause some chaos of my own when I came across a crow that was pecking at what looked like a cluster of mussels, barnacles, and rock. They are usually in the habit of bringing shelled creatures over cement, where they will drop them from a certain height in order to crack them open and more easily get to the treats inside.

My haunch was confirmed when the crow took the seafood cluster and swooping up in the air, it let it fall onto the cement.

On the way
Here’s where things got interesting. The parking lot was empty except for two groups of pigeons doing pigeon things around there. The crow deliberately flew to where they were and dropped the piece right in between them, where it landed with a heavy thud and explosion of broken shells that sent the pigeons scattering away from the immediate area in a flutter of wings.

Did the crow do it on purpose? I wondered. It had flown all the way across the parking lot to drop it. Unnecessarily, it seemed to me, because I have seen them do it in place just fine. So why spend the extra energy to fly over there where the pigeons were minding their business?
When I looked back, I saw the crow had picked up his harvest, taken it nearby and continued pecking at it enthusiastically.
