Dreaming of Santo Domingo
If I were emperor of the Americas, I would make it mandatory for all citizens from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego to make a pilgrimage to Santo Domingo, the birthplace of the America's modern history and civilizations. Alas, I'm not emperor yet, so the best I can do is tantalize your eyeballs with digital travel signals from the historic, glorious, and slightly dangerous streets of Santo Domingo.

The colonial zone has its own security called politur that keeps the tourists and locals safe. It's neat how residents mix with the foreigners in this particular spot. It's like there's a balance, though I'm sure prices in the area are more tourist friendly.
You could stand on any corner of the colonial zone and be in the presence of multiple historical firsts in the Americas. The place is imbued with history and drama, though some buildings could use a facelift.

There are wonderful architectural forms, most of which are derived from Spanish tradition. What I found cool is that people still inhabit these buildings. Although many have been converted into tourist shops or museums, a few old buildings are still used for their intended purposes.

😍

Quaint and artsy

Negentropy vs Entropy
A home ought to be treated like a work of art.

A few buildings look more modern, perhaps from the 70s.

Jose Reyes was a composer who helped create the music for the national anthem. One thing that struck me about Dominicans is how proud they are of their history, good and bad. This unapologetic love and respect of country, of its roots and history is refreshing and inspiring.

Gorgeous pictures. Thank you for saving me from taking a trip to this island nation. I'm not up to it anymore :))
This gave me pause. I know it's technically true, but you can see how some might object to this Eurocentric view of 'modern history and civilization'. I know you have great regard for the indigenous cultures of the Americas. It's just...that sentence might give some people pause, also.
Thank you! That's a beautiful place and full of history. I personally don't see a problem with stating the obvious. Our modern society in the Americas began the moment Columbus stepped ashore and altered the course of history in the Americas. There was a history before arrival, but we all know what happened. Europeans settled and colonized the Americas to create the homes you and I inhabit.
Looking at your photographs is like seeing the non-touristy side of Santo Domingo, that side of every city that you don't normally see on a tour and that escapes the reality of those tourists but also exists. The exterior facades of the houses, their colonial style, even those cables that criss-cross the streets and are characteristic of many countries in Latin America and Central America as well.
You show the need for street maintenance in many cases, as well as buildings that have been converted into museums, for example. That is the reality of walking, of travelling through the streets of a place on your own, and Santo Domingo is very beautiful and picturesque. Thank you for bringing it to us. Hugs!

Thank you @topcomment and @stresskiller, thank you very much!🤗
This particular area called Zona Colonial is interesting because you can see many historic sights that are well maintained and others that require more maintenance. When I was there earlier this year, I saw a lot of construction on the streets because they are upgrading them. So that was wonderful to see, even if it was in front of my hotel, because in addition to fixing a few problems, the work rejuvenates the area and provides many jobs for the locals.
This is another shot of the area.
I didn't realize there was someone in the building looking at me :D
There is always someone watching!👀
Beautiful construction.🤗
