A Salish Stroll Through the Forest

The Canadian province of British Columbia is home to lush rainforest with a rich variety of trees and plants. While the western parts of the province are wet and cold, the eastern parts are warmer and drier. So you find a mix of species from both regions cohabiting in the same zone. Indigenous people made use of these plants for medicinal, culinary, religious, and other purposes.

There is a wonderful nature walk in the city of Whistler that shows some of the plants used by indigenous people. When I took these pictures, there was some snow on the ground, so it was slim pickings as far as plant photography was concerned, but I took some shots of the panels that provide detail on the plants and their cultural significance.

The stroll is relatively easy and can be done in a few minutes. There are also longer trail that takes you to other parts along Fitzsimmons creek. It's a unique place because it's embedded in the middle of the city and yet has that rugged feel of the backcountry.

Thank you for coming along on the stroll. I hope you found it refreshing.

It was cold and wet. In the summer, you can actually see the plants mentioned on the signs. It's good to see what it looks like in winter because it helps get a sense of what the indigenous people had to deal with during winter.
