A Man for All Seasons

"This monument is erected in his memory by the children of a grateful nation" San Juan, Puerto Rico
Men and women appear in every epoch that ride powerful waves of changes and may even be the instigators, the spark that sets things in motion. One such man was born in Puerto Rico in 1839 and goes by the name of Eugenio María de Hostos. Educator, lawyer, novelist, philosopher, sociologist, and more. Hostos championed independence, and the creation of the Antillean confederation between Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. Now known as El Gran Ciudadano de las Américas (The Great Citizen of the Americas), he traveled throughout Latin America and spoke up for worker's rights, universal education, including women's, the abolition of slavery and so forth. He died in Santo Domingo in 1903, where a street has been named in his honour.
