[ENGLISH] The brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a bird of the pelican family, Pelecanidae, one of three species found in the Americas and one of two that feed by diving into water.
It is found on the Atlantic Coast from New Jersey to the mouth of the Amazon River, and along the Pacific Coast from British Columbia to northern Chile, including the Galapagos Islands.
The nominate subspecies in its breeding plumage has a white head with a yellowish wash on the crown. The nape and neck are dark maroon–brown. The upper sides of the neck have white lines along the base of the gular pouch, and the lower fore neck has a pale yellowish patch.
The male and female are similar, but the female is slightly smaller. The nonbreeding adult has a white head and neck. The pink skin around the eyes becomes dull and gray in the nonbreeding season.
It lacks any red hue, and the pouch is strongly olivaceous ochre-tinged and the legs are olivaceous gray to blackish-gray.

[ESPAÑOL] El pelícano pardo (Pelecanus occidentalis) es un ave de la familia de los pelícanos, Pelecanidae, una de las tres especies que se encuentran en América y una de las dos que se alimentan buceando en el agua.
Se encuentra en la costa Atlántica desde Nueva Jersey hasta la desembocadura del río Amazonas, y a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico desde Columbia Británica hasta el norte de Chile, incluidas las Islas Galápagos.
La subespecie nominal en su plumaje de cría tiene una cabeza blanca con un lavado amarillento en la corona. La nuca y el cuello son de color marrón granate oscuro. Los lados superiores del cuello tienen líneas blancas a lo largo de la base de la bolsa gular, y el cuello anterior inferior tiene un parche amarillento pálido.
El macho y la hembra son similares, pero la hembra es un poco más pequeña. El adulto no reproductor tiene la cabeza y el cuello blancos. La piel rosada alrededor de los ojos se vuelve opaca y gris en la temporada de no reproducción.
Carece de cualquier tonalidad roja, y la bolsa tiene un fuerte tinte ocre oliváceo y las patas son de color gris oliváceo a gris negruzco.
