Kathmandu 30 years ago! #Monomad challenge
These months coming & going to Kathmandu have been intense, I have been very lucky in getting new, great friends. One of them is a far better and more published photographer than me, so he has been a mentor & coach for me, really pushing hard on high level concepts from experience!
This is probably a restaurant owner carrying ghee, which is made from butter
The narrow streets of Thamel are still full of porters and any type of vehicle, but back then there were no phones nor lighted up signs and so on.
Porters, probably carrying cloth or similar
There are still porters doing the same! The rickshaws seem to be gone, though.
Tough guy checking me out at Boudhanath.
When I go through these old images I notice that there are lots of these tough looking, very strong guys compared to now!
Monks/yogis leaving for mountain retreats
If I understood & recall it correctly the stores on the corner to the right closer to the stupa had items for those who wander the Himalayas, staying in caves for months on end.
This is certainly gone. Of course there are many who do retreats this way, but it is probably more organized, and maybe even influenced by the external world when it comes to phones and such...
All of these should be from 1996 if I remember correctly.
Technical details
Nikon F-801, 20-35mm, Fujifilm Sensia. Scanned by myself, some are cropped hard and dragged through a rough process into black & white. I just like the grittiness 😁
I still have ~100 days left of the 5 months I can stay here, but will leave soon. Will be available for 1-1 coaching in photography here, probably from mid August. #monomad
