Long winter night walk, Tromsø, Norway

The only phrase, that I can use to describe one of my few freezing long night walks at Tromsø, Norway, is "fairy tale".

I am so very grateful there was no strong wind this night, if at all.
Otherwise it would be a nightmare to have carried all that photo equipment with me, this time with the tripod, resulting in a staggering weight of more than 12 kilograms on my back and neck :)))

I couldn't take that lovely long exposure photo above of that slowly sailing passenger ship.

The marina with the boats and yachts covered in snow was indeed like taken out of a fairy tale, don't you think?

By now, I suppose, you can tell that this "starry" effect of the light sources within the photos is a favorite technique of mine. True, it is beautiful, at least to me. But to achieve it, the Aperture must be at least f/13, and better results are achieved with values like f/16 or even f/22 if not more. The quality might suffer so it is always a matter of ballance.

The feeling to walk in this part of the city, that is a bit industrial and less occupied, was kind of spooky.

The silhouette of the Arctic Cathedral, covered in lights was a bit calming though...

I would be surprised to see children play at this playground, but in the summer it must be busier, right? :)

From time to time we got the company of the big road snow cleaning machines, that, of course, I used to create this lovely trailing lights motion blur, or light painting, you may say ;)

The main reason to spend several hours outdoors in a freezing polar night, of course, was the hope to see and photograph Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights.

However, we were not lucky this night, as the night sky was covered in clouds.

We used the time to explore some view points at that part of the city, though.
And of course, to have some fun, as long as the cold was allowing us to do so :)

The weather didn't seem to change rapidly, so we also checked a small local old wooden church, logically closed during the night, but lighted in a magical way.

One of my friends even pretended to have wings :)

Do you see the enchanted lines that the mild wind and the snow from the trees create?

Good that we found the time to go to that church and take those snow covered pictures, as, unfortunately, we didn't find the time later to visit it during the days.

Time is so limited and precious, isn't it...

Limited daylight hours, great you managed a couple of hours outdoors without the wind factor to worry you!

Excellent photography captures, living down South this is magical in every way, hopefully the sky lights up soon with a magical display to lure you out once again.

beautiful pics and great effort, but feel sorry for you and everyone in chilly temperatures like that as immune system is hammered and the whole body and mind suffer a lot

Thank you but I cannot agree about the second part. Pushing the body outside the zone of comfort now and then actually feels good and I can tell it has a positive effect in general.
