Captured in Action

I hope you will agree with me that birds are very beautiful when they fly. They are indeed amazing creatures, with shallow bones and feathers designed to repel water and support them in the air. So no wonder people have been admiring them for ages and trying to replicate their structure to all us to fly. Even in the modern airplanes there are still some design, inspired by all those beautiful and free creatures.

From photographic perspective it is not easy to create a perfect shot of a flying bird. Trust me on that. Unless you have the ideal conditions and some extremely expensive equipment, and by that I mean the newest high-end DSLR and lenses that weight a few kilos each and cost thousands of Euros or Dollars, don't expect breathtaking captures of flying animals :)

I usually use semi-manual mode. I shoot such kind of action either in camera Manual or Shutter Priority modes. With the latest DSLRs, the ISO could be set anywhere in the range 400-1200 and the shutter speed, of course, depending on the light, focal lengths and the speed of the flying bird, and should be no less than 1/2000 s, in my experience. That is even the slowest shutter speed I would use. So if the day is bright, go to 1/4000 s or even 1/8000 s but that shutter speed isn't supported by all cameras.

Here are some bird photographs I captured on different locations in Italy, Greece and the Vatican City.

This first photo, presenting the stunning wing and its feathers, of one Great White Heron, is my entry to "Qurator's Photo Quest | feathers" by @qurator, thank you! :)
