Great Barbet (Elusive Bird) | Smap 103

The Great Barbet is a large bird species that is native to Asia and commonly found in Margalla hills, Islamabad. The Great Barbet is a very elusive bird with a thick bill and a distinctive green plumage. It is one of the largest species of barbets found in our area. The Great Barbet can be found in a habitats of thick forests and sometime found in gardens and orchards. It is a non-migratory species and famous for its loud and distinctive call.


The Great Barbet mostly feeds on fruits but sometime also feed on insects and small reptiles. The bird is known to forage for food in the trees and mostly found perched on high branches. He hide himself in branches and flying between trees in search of food.


The Great Barbet is an important bird species in the area and plays a key role in pollination. The Great Barbet is listed as "Least Concern" by IUCN. The Great Barbet has relatively stable population but still is under threat due to habitat loss.

Barbet is a gorgeous bird, with a beak that they know how to use, we have the Black-collared barbet as a relatively frequent visitor. Love the colours and great photography.
