The Slow Death of Light Painting?
I hope I'm wrong
I have been a Light Painter since 2012. During this time, I've seen some ups and downs in the light painting community. There were always envious people, loud-mouthed blowhards and people who thought they were great artists, even if they only copied techniques or entire paintings by other artists. But in most cases, the exchange with colleagues was friendly, inspiring and objective. At international meetings, such as Light Up Berlin 2019, we had a lot of fun together. I miss that very much.
Seit 2012 bin ich Light Painter. In dieser Zeit habe ich so einige Höhen und Tiefen der Light Painting Community gesehen. Immer wieder gab es Neider, großmäulige Wichtigtuer und Leute, die sich für großartige Künstler hielten, auch wenn sie ausschließlich Techniken oder gleich ganze Bilder anderer Künstler kopiert haben. Aber in den meisten Fällen war der Austausch mit den Kollegen freundlich, inspirierend und sachlich. Bei internationalen Treffen, wie dem Light Up Berlin 2019 hatten wir gemeinsam viel Spaß. Das vermisse ich sehr.

But what makes me think that light painting is slowly dying? I deleted my Facebook and Instagram accounts a few years ago. So I'm sure I'm missing out on some of the activities of my Light Painting colleagues. But there is noticeably less activity on the platforms I use. The number of light painters who present their works of art here on HIVE is now very manageable. And even in my second home, Flickr, there are noticeably fewer light painting pictures being posted. Some old hands have completely disappeared from the scene, such as the highly esteemed Pala Teth from Belgium. His website, as well as Patrick Rochon's, for example, are no longer accessible.
Aber wie komme ich nun darauf, dass Light Painting langsam stirbt? Vor einigen Jahren habe ich meine Accounts bei Facebook und Instagram gelöscht. Somit verpasse ich sicher einige Aktivitäten der Light Painting Kollegen. Aber auf den Plattformen, auf denen ich unterwegs bin, ist spürbar weniger Betrieb. Die Zahl der Light Painter, die hier auf HIVE ihre Kunstwerke präsentieren, ist mittlerweile sehr überschaubar. Und auch in meiner zweiten Heimat, Flickr, werden merklich weniger Light Painting Bilder gepostet. Einige Alte Hasen sind komplett von der Bildfläche verschwunden, wie der überaus geschätzte Pala Teth aus Belgien. Seine, aber auch beispielsweise die Homepage von Patrick Rochon, sind nicht mehr erreichbar.
And somehow it feels like there are no new light painters with new, fresh ideas. However, none of this is empirical evidence that the light painting community is shrinking. So I compared the current search volume on Google for search terms such as "light painting" or "light art photography" with that of 2 or 3 years ago. There are currently around 1000 queries a day for the term "light painting", whereas 2, 3 or 5 years ago it was between 2,400 and 2,500. This can also be seen in the number of hits on my homepage. These have also decreased noticeably. The sales figures for my book are also very limited. Don't get me wrong. I knew before I typed the first word into the computer that I wasn't going to amass any riches with a non-fiction book about light painting. But a little more interest in this particular art form would be a good thing.
In summer, the light painting community isn't usually so busy anyway, because it gets dark late and light early. We can only hope that more life will soon be breathed into light painting again.
Und irgendwie gibt es gefühlt keine neuen Light Painter, mit neuen, frischen Ideen. Das alles ist allerdings noch kein empirischer Beleg, dass die Light Painting Community immer weiter schrumpft. Also hab ich mal bei Google das aktuelle Suchvolumen für Suchbegriffe wie "Light Painting" oder "Light Art Photography" mit dem von vor 2 oder 3 Jahren verglichen. Aktuell gibt es täglich ca. 1000 Anfragen zum Begriff "Light Painting", vor 2, 3 oder 5 Jahren waren es zwischen 2400 und 2500. Auch an den Zugriffen auf meine Homepage wird das sichtbar. Diese haben ebenfalls spürbar abgenommen. Auch die Verkaufszahlen meines Buches halten sich sehr in Grenzen. Versteht mich nicht falsch. Dass ich mit einem Sachbuch über das Thema Light Painting keine Reichtümer anhäufe, war mir bewusst, bevor ich das erste Wort in den Computer eingetippt habe. Aber ein etwas größeres Interesse an dieser besonderen Kunstform wäre schon gut.
Im Sommer ist meist ohnehin nicht so viel Betrieb in der Light Painting Community, weil es spät dunkel und früh hell wird. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass recht bald wieder mehr Leben ins Light Painting kommt.
At the end of the day, I'm not dependent on a large community and many interested people, I mainly make my pictures for myself. I get motivation and inspiration from all kinds of places and not just from the work of other light painters. However, as an artist I also live from applause. But the most important aspect is that working together with other light painters is much more fun than when I'm out in the dark on my own. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to wave my flashlights around at night several times a year with some esteemed colleagues. I hope to be out and about with @marlasinger666, @gunnarheilmann, @stepko, @candelart and a few other obsessives again very soon.
Ich bin letztendlich nicht auf eine große Community und viele Interessierte angewiesen, ich mache meine Bilder hauptsächlich für mich. Motivation und Inspiration bekomme ich an allen möglichen Stellen und nicht nur durch die Arbeit anderer Light Painter. Allerdings lebe ich als Künstler auch vom Applaus. Aber der wichtigste Aspekt ist, dass die gemeinsame Arbeit mit anderen Light Paintern viel mehr Spaß macht, als wenn ich allein in der Dunkelheit unterwegs bin. Ich bin in der glücklichen Position, dass ich mehrmals im Jahr mit einigen geschätzten Kollegen nachts mit den Taschenlampen rumfuchteln kann. Ich hoffe, dass ich recht bald wieder mit @marlasinger666, @gunnarheilmann, @stepko, @candelart und einigen anderen Besessenen unterwegs sein kann.

For various reasons, I myself am no longer out at night as often as I was a few years ago. Perhaps many of my colleagues feel the same way. And maybe I'm being too pessimistic and somewhere in the world the light painters are out and about making new, fresh, creative pictures that I just don't know about. What is your perception? Is light painting slowly dying? Or are my colleagues in a deep sleep? Or is there something wrong with my perception?
Aus verschiedenen Gründen bin ich selbst nicht mehr so häufig nachts unterwegs wie vor einigen Jahren. Vielleicht geht es vielen meiner Kollegen ähnlich. Und vielleicht bin ich auch zu pessimistisch und irgendwo auf der Welt sind die Light Painter unterwegs und machen neue, frische, kreative Bilder, die ich nur nicht kenne. Wie ist denn eure Wahrnehmung? Stirbt Light Painting so langsam? Oder sind die Kollegen in einem Dornröschenschlaf? Oder stimmt mit meiner Wahrnehmung etwas nicht?

Meine Theorie ist, dass alles, was kreativ ist und/oder Zeit und Mühe kostet, zurückgeht, auch z.B. das Schreiben von längeren Posts. Grund? Soziale Medien wie YT und Tiktok, die die neue Generation schon von klein auf zu passiven Konsumenten macht.
Ich befürchte, dass Deine Theorie stimmt. Selbständiges Denken und Handeln sind sehr aus der Mode gekommen. Wenn ich allerdings Teile der Generation der 16 bis 20-jährigen sehe, besteht noch Hoffnung für das Fortbestehen der Menschheit. Die sind erstaunlich wach und reflektiert.
Light Painting ist ja nicht wirklich Kunst aber wiederum auch kein Medium wie zB #NFT. Es ist einfach ein Bildgenre, eins von vielen, wie zB Stilleben.
Ist klar, daß dafür das Interesse abnimmt und irgendwann ganz schwindet.
Irgendwann hat man ja auch schon genug bunte Bilder gesehen, die im Kern fast alle gleich sind.
Dann ist der Budenzauber auch schnell vorbei.

Sehr schöne Bilder, wenn ich das so sehe muss ich unbedingt auch einmal ein paar light painting aufnahmen zumindest versuchen. Ich glabue alles hat seine Zeit und es gibt immer wieder mal gewisse Trends die dann gehypt werden, vermutlich ist das mit light painting ähnlich, da es vielleicht gerade nicht im "Trend" ist wird es nicht mehr von so vielen aktiv praktiziert. Ich muss zugebne ich habe es selbst auch noch nicht probiert obwohl ich schon sehr viele kreative Sachen in der Fotografie gemacht habe, hat es mich bis jetzt nicht wirklich gereizt.
Mir geht es zumindest so dass ich oft in einer Gruppe von Freunden verschiedenes probiere in Bezug auf fotografie und man dann das eine oder andere an Techniken probiert. Je nachdem welche Leute in so einer Gruppe sind ist diese immer auf eine spezielle Art von Fotografie beschränkt beispielsweise Makro, oder Milchstraße oder Portrait, oder Landschaft, selten dass sich einige für alle Bereiche interessieren.
Vielen Dank, es freut mich, dass Dir die Bilder gefallen. Sei vorsichtig beim Light Painting, man wird schnell süchtig.
Es kann schon sein, dass der Trend abflaut und die Leute sich anderen Dingen zuwenden. Der fünftausendste Orb wird dann sicher auch irgendwann langweilig. Ich bin nur etwas traurig, dass einige Light Painter, die viele Jahre lang immer wieder coole Bilder gemacht haben, verschwunden sind oder nur noch drei Bilder im Jahr präsentieren. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass sie gesund und munter sind.
Ein Blick über den Tellerrand hinaus hat noch nie geschadet. Erfahrungen, die ich beim Fotografieren bei Tageslicht sammle, nutzen mir auch bei der Arbeit in der Nacht und umgekehrt.

Your article is very inspirative and talks about a couple of things I have in mind since the Covid shit.
First, it's such a pity our communty vanished because of that. I can understand that a lot of people realized they had things more important than lightpainting in life but the number of really active lightpainters appears to be very very low nowadays. We were hundreds. A lot of communities survived to the pandemic so what's different with ours?
I miss LPWA as its previous form so much : it was really something great for us and, may be at one point, we took it for granted and we never thought it would disappear. The Lightpainters United community was fun and promising but it occured that only a couple of guys were really involved. It was also based on the idead of building a strong community here on the blockchain to raise funds but less than 20 lightpainters created an account here and most of them never really used it.
The fact that there's no fresh work/new styles in lighpainting now maybe decided a lot of mates to give up. The lack of creativity is something I had strongly in mind during the last 3 years and I still have no answer for it. I recently moved to a new flat and I'll try to build a small LP studio here and try to push my boundaries. I have a lot of unmade ideas I had during my journey but will it be really creative?
Back in the days, I was visiting Berlin a couple of times a year. As I started to travel back to foreign last year, it would be really cool to schedule something with @marlasinger666, @gunnarheilmann, @stepko and @candelart in Germany.
I don't go out as often as I did during the past decade but, to be honest, it would have not be possible to keep that crazy pace more than twelve years. As I still take pleasure and fun while doing it, I don't plan to stop lightpainting.
Unlike many lightpainters, I prefer summer : ok you go out late, but you don't freeze, you have vegetation... I don't need to sleep a lot, that's really convenient.
I don't care about having thousands of followers on social medias too but it's always cool to have feedbacks from esteemed mates. It's like a recognition that you made something noticeable, a kind of reward for the effort and/or creativity/technique.
Talking about the place of technique in lightpainting, compared to creativity, could be and endless but passionated thing to talk about.
Thanks for your comment. Light Painting was a great opportunity for me to stay mental healthy during the last four years. We had no problems with the police during the lockdown. Sometimes they asked what we are doing and leaved us alone after a short look at our pics. But I am sure in other regions light painting was not that easy during the pandemic. I hope the colleagues I am missing are all well.

I think it is not that much about LPWA or any other organisation. There is always a risk of commercialisation. A decentralised, non-commercial platform without an boss will be a better solution for creativity. My account at LPWA was deleted sometime without any explanation. And the same could happen every time on the so-called social networks. On the other hand I have no idea how to get more light painters into the HIVE blockchain.
Es ist die Zeit, die vielen Menschen fehlt, sich den wirklich schönen Dingen zu widmen, weil sie sich leicht triggern lassen. Es geht sicher vielen Künstlern so wie uns Lightpaintern. Diejenigen, die es verstehen, sich in den Mittelpunkt zu bringen und zu vermarkten, sind überproportional in den Medien präsent. Die Künstler, die keinen Applaus ernten, ziehen sich oft zurück.
In diesem Jahr werde ich in zwei Solo- und in einer Gemeinschaftsausstellung präsent sein. Alles in einem bescheidenen Rahmen in Kleinstädten und Gemeinden. Die Erste Vernissage war überraschend gut besucht und die Werke stießen auf ein großes Interesse. Die Lokalblätter berichteten darüber. Einige Werke wurden gekauft. D.h., die Kunstform Lightpainting hat nichts an Attraktivität eingebüßt. Der mittlerweile unmündige Bürger will gelenkt werden. Damit sind wir Künstler überfordert, weil dies mehr Business als Kunst ist.
Was treibt uns also an, all die Mühe und Last zu tragen? Der Spaß an der Sache selbst! Mir würde etwas fehlen, wenn ich diese Kunstform nie kennen gelernt hätte. Für mich ist Lightpainting nicht nur Kunst oder Hobby, sondern auch Therapie. Ich bin froh, dass es diese lichtverrückte Gemeinschaft gibt und bin auch überzeugt, dass in dieser Gemeinschaft noch epochale Kunstwerke entstehen werden! Auch wenn die Gemeinschaft vielleicht kleiner geworden ist, so wird die Glut, die das Feuer immer wieder entfacht, nie erlöschen.
