The Rusty Bridge Part 2 - Light Painting Photography on HIVE

Phoenix

After @stepko had woken up again, we set to work on the next picture. First I painted @stepko with fire, then I painted the red lines on the ground and in the last one I lit the bridge with the Emisar D4K. Doesn't sound so difficult, does it? However, I had my difficulties with the red lines. I painted them directly on the asphalt with a 660 nm torch. Since I was a bit out of practice, I lost my orientation a bit. The lines on the ground were not where they were supposed to be. So we had to repeat the picture a few times.

Don't worry, @stepko got through it without any burns. The fire was not a real fire. I had used a pink fibreglass brush with an orange Convoy S2+ to paint the fire. That is the best variant for me so far. Real fire usually doesn't look good. The amount of blue light is often too high. It also burns out quickly. The esteemed colleague @candelart posted a contribution a few days ago in which he introduces other possibilities for painting fire. You can find it here:

Diesen findest Du hier:

How To Paint Flames

Here you can see the tool used to paint fire.

Now that the picture was finally on the memory card after a few attempts, we had earned a break. After the break, we continued. In the meantime, the moon illuminated the landscape quite brightly. Actually, this is disturbing in light painting, but you can take it as a feature if it cannot be changed.

I lit the foreground of the scene with the Emisar D4K. The rest of the light comes from the moon.

Here I didn't even have to help with the torch. The bridge was illuminated exclusively by moonlight.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.

I like your work, but I don´t like that banner "AI is not art". AI is a tool like your lamps and rotation equipment, and for sure you can experiment with prompts and be still creative. To bash AI so generally is too simplistic, in my opinion.

If someone enjoys generating art with the help of a keyboard, they are welcome to do so. I don't want to demonise this technique in principle. There are certainly useful applications for it. But the comparison with the torches and the rotation tool is somewhat misleading. I can't just call them any prompts and then they paint me a picture. Quite apart from the fact that I built the Rotation Tool myself with a lot of effort, as well as some of my torches. In my opinion, the main problem is in a completely different place. The databases of the AI programmes consist of millions of photos, graphics, etc. These original images were created by real people. They were not asked if their images could be used. They do not receive any remuneration for it.

In the meantime, some courts have ruled that AI-generated images are not worthy of copyright protection because there is no significant human involvement in the creative process. Thus, it cannot be compared to man-made art. As long as someone clearly states that the image was generated with AI, I don't have a big problem with it. But since quite a few contemporaries keep quiet about it and claim that they are doing the same thing as me, I find it very difficult. In my opinion, real photographs are much more "valuable" than computer-processed or completely generated images. And I find this even more questionable in the field of painting. A "real" painting can probably be generated much more easily with AI than a "real" photograph.

Time will tell in which direction it will go. For sure a rule from a court is worth nothing, they are not in the possession of the ultimate truth. In the past steam engines were condemned, trains, etc.
Yes, the process is different, but at the end of the day it is the outcome which will last, not the way it was done. 100 years later, who will ask how something was done, people might be glad they found something 100 years old, in an archive.

A steam engine is not about art. Art is about the soul of the artist. The AI machine has no soul. And I think it is impossible to transfer your soul with the keyboard in a computer. But I am old and take photos for over 40 years now. Maybe my brain is not flexible for all the nice stuff of the modern times.
