AI generated "art"
DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
I had firmly resolved to ignore this bullshit completely. When there is such a hype about something new, the phenomenon usually disappears again after a short time, like Tamagotchi or Pokemon Go. AI-generated "art"? That's absolutely ridiculous. A computer cannot create art. A computer has no soul, no feelings. For the users, this should also become very boring very quickly. And only very few people are likely to be so unpretentious that they seriously expect recognition for their artistic creations.
To create this "artwork" I instructed the machine to generate a fibre optic lightpainting portrait of a woman. After about 1 minute the image was saved on my hard drive. Very creepy, in my opinion. On closer inspection you can see that it is not a real lightpainting. But I don't want to think about what results the machine will deliver in a year or two. And I probably could have improved the result. But I didn't feel like doing that at all. The only reason I tested it at all is that I wanted to know what I was getting excited about.
The "creation" of this "work of art" also only took a minute. Actually, I could shrug my shoulders calmly, but it is to be feared that more and more busybodies are using this method to generate light paintings without mentioning that their creative share is zero. I like to say that I have no competition and do not compare myself with other artists, but in my opinion there is a danger that our special art form will be damaged. More and more people might classify our art as computer-generated and thus devalue it massively. All the images in this post are completely worthless because there was no human creative input in their production.
Yesterday I got an email from a German photo community, the reason to write this post. It announced a competition for AI-generated "photos". The prize money was 3000€. The question immediately popped into my head as to who should get this prize money. But not the person who submitted the "photo". He is by no means the author of the "photo". There is no copyright for such pictures. How could there be? There is no human part in the creative process. And the computer that created the "photo" cannot exercise copyright. So what is this shit?
Also was soll dieser Scheiß?
tI find these results very frightening. It's as if Frankenstein had been handed a camera. Many viewers of such images will not realise that they are not photographs created by humans. I don't even want to think about the consequences of all this. Without much effort, any situation can be visualised out of nowhere in an extremely short time and disseminated through the media. The complete moon landing would be created in five minutes by a single person in front of a computer.
Every talentless busybody can now be celebrated as a great artist. Buy a few thousand followers on Instagram with a few euros and upload two or three of these "works of art" every day and all is right with the world. The photographers who take pictures of other people's light paintings and then pass them off as their own are almost harmless compared to that.
So. Enough excitement. I'll wait until this bullshit is over again and do some real light painting.
So. Genug aufgeregt.

I have to say, i have been keeping up with the AI advancements into all the fields of application you mentioned for a few years now. It's insane how fast the quality of outputs has become. Honestly, if you are familiar with the tech and where it's at... there are tell-tale signs of AI art that one can look for.
But, as you said for the future, it's going to be virtually impossible to tell the differences. That's why i think the actual knowledge and analog skills will become paramount. Just like everyone depends on googling things now, was our dictionary before, and you just had to have wisdom and experience before that.
I feel like there is an incredible convergence for synergy if an artist/photographer wants to incorporate AI in the artistic process as a tool. Unfortunately, there will be many that take advantage of this tool and depend on it for scamming, rather than applying the opportunity appropriately.
There has been much debate about the pros and cons of all this tech invasiveness and where it will all lead. I just keep on keepin' on and see where the cards fall where they may!
There are certainly many useful applications for AI technologies. I don't want to demonise these technologies at all. However, it is to be feared that AI will increasingly be used for negative, criminal purposes. The temptation is simply too great.
In the field of art, I don't see much use beyond that. After three generated paintings, I was bored with it. I can't think of what I could use it for creatively at the moment. It would be like Picasso shouting three, four, five terms against his canvas and then his pictures would just appear on it. That's not creative and doesn't give the artist any satisfaction. Completely emancipated from the extent to which he is celebrated by the public for his work.
I think the more these tools develop, obviously, the more they will be misused by some. But, those with skill and actual experience from practical application with wisdom will be even more precious. Kind of like the saying that in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. A majority of people wouldn't know good photography from bad just like many in the future won't be able to tell the real from the fake.
But, those with eyes to see and experience will be able to continue to succeed and set themselves apart for having a craft of their own. In art, i have found that it can be like sketching. The A.I. can help get things started like a sketch would sometimes give some influence that i might not have thought of. I have been working with the AI art for about 2 yrs and the options are becoming insane since most of the newer tools being added are all opensource.
I have seen people use it for good, bad, and ugly. I think the responsible use of it would just make it another creative tool to use in the equipment bag. Though, i would say the AI gear is much lighter to carry around! hahaha Cheers
Maybe AI and I weil be friends sometime. Denpending on the direction, it will go.
Light gear? I like. 🤣
I am trying to make friends with AI now, so when it takes over... it will remember me. If you can't beat 'em.... join 'em. hahahha
🤣
Last three photos was quite interesting. In most above it was something strange.
There are no photos in this post. Only AI generated pictures.
Ok - my bad word. Looks like photos, but yes it's generated... (a new reality) ;)
🙂
I agree its a wild new world that is coming so fast. I guess in some way the generating is kind of art also actually cause you cant get the best results by just typing in random words. The best results need a lot of time to fine tune settings and prompts. So imo this AI is going to replace Camera or pencil or brush for some uses. But yeah the fastness of it when being good at it does make it weird with our current world and understandings. We will have to wait to see how and what will happen in the future.
Yes, we can only wait. To fight against the new stuff makes nobody happy.
Its good to try new things out and if its just a hype so be it but imo this is too good already to not become a tool used for many areas to fasten up creation for practical stuff more and maybe some also to art.
