I find that we need to fill up the tires every time we use the bicycles it's really annoying and I don't remember bicycle tires being so leaky in my youth

If you don't use them a lot they might need a bit of air over time, but I hardly pump up my tires.
But it also depends on quality of the tires.

You can always go for airless tires nowadays like these Schwalbe Airless ones:
