This weekend we were in Upata, the first town south of Ciudad Guayana, in the state of Bolívar, there we carried out a day of veterinary care for more than 160 animals, most of them dogs and cats but some rabbits, goats and even a little monkey.

The activity was promoted by a group of young volunteers from Upata who, with the support of the private sector and the mayor's office, guaranteed all the logistical issues involved in the activity, also considering that the participating veterinarians are not from Upata, although they were invited, not Only veterinarians from other cities attended to support (a monetary issue really).

Many people took the opportunity to attend with their animals to receive basic veterinary care, consultation, deworming and vaccination, all services except vaccination were free, the latter was applied at a low cost.

In the activity we shared space with young animal volunteers who carried out adoption, recreational activities, etc., in total there were more than 30 participants who attended to the more than 200 people who attended the activity with their animals.

Some of the animals participating in the parade attended wearing a funny skirt that, although it usually looks funny, I must admit that it is something that tends to humanize the way we see animals, something that is still discussed in the animal world.

Another example is that of this kitten who, at the time of care, one of the veterinarians recommended removing that decoration that was stuck on her face since it can stress the poor kitten.

Veterinary Care

In total, more than 160 animals received care in two days of work, from 8 am to 4 pm. We had to pause for an hour on the first day because a cat accidentally bit one of the veterinarians and we had to go to the doctor. to avoid health complications, fortunately despite the scare it did not lead to major complications.

The consultation and deworming were completely free, to access the low-cost vaccines they cost between $5 and $15, it may seem like a lot but I guarantee that in a veterinary clinic they cost more.

Some even brought their bunnies, although there was no vaccine for them, I think only the anti-rabies vaccine.

Currently there is an animal rights movement in Venezuela, from the institution that I represent, a bill for the protection of animals was submitted to the national assembly as a reform of the already existing law, said preliminary bill was approved and will soon be up for discussion. publishes where all sectors of society will participate.

Many people say that state support is needed in this, but I tell them that awareness is really needed. Currently, some veterinary unions are against this type of social activities, alluding to the issue of "unfair competition" since the people who attend These free services, according to them, represent a loss for the private sector since they do not pay for consultations in their clinics, it is a reality, they even threaten to sanction veterinarians who participate in social or free activities promoted by the state, some veterinarians even They decide not to participate due to exclusively economic reasons, not because of lack of payment but because they serve for the blackmail to which the veterinary union subjects them, they feel afraid.

With all my heart I hope that the law on the practice of veterinary medicine, which has been in force since 1968, will also be modified, as this requires review and adaptation to new times.

Algunos de los animales participantes en el desfile asistieron usando una graciosa falda que aunque suele verse divertido, debo reconocer que es algo que suele humanizar la forma en que vemos a los animales, algo todavia discutido en el mundo animalista.

Otro ejemplo es el de esta gatita que en el momento de la atención, uno de los veterinarios le recomendó quitar esa decoración que le pegaron en el rostro ya que puede estresar a la pobre gatita.

Atención Veterinaria

En total mas de 160 animales recibieron la atención en dos días de trabajo, desde las 8 am hasta las 4 pm, tuvimos que pausar durante una hora el primer día ya que accidentalmente una gata mordió a uno de los veterinarios y tuvimos que ir al medico para evitar complicaciones de salud, afortunadamente a pesar del susto no pasó a mayor complicación.

La consulta y desparasitación fue totalmente gratuita, para acceder a las vacunas a bajo costo estas tenían un costo de 5 y 15$, quizás parezca mucho pero les garantizo que en una clínica veterinaria cuestan mas.

Algunos incluso llevaron sus conejitos, aunque para estos no había vacuna, creo que solo la antirrábica.

Reflexión

Actualmente hay una movida animalista en Venezuela, desde la institución a la que represento, se consignó ante la asamblea nacional un proyecto de ley de protección a los animales a modo de reforma de la ya existente, dicho ante proyecto fue aprobado y próximamente pasará a discusión publica donde participarán todos los sectores de la sociedad.

Muchas personas dicen que hace falta apoyo del estado en esto, pero les cuento que realmente hace falta es conciencia, actualmente algunos gremios veterinarios están en contra de este tipo de actividades sociales aludiendo al tema de la "competencia desleal" ya que las personas que acuden a estos servicios gratuitos, según ellos, representan perdida para el sector privado ya que no pagan consulta en sus clínicas, es una realidad, incluso amenazan con sancionar gremialmente a los veterinarios que participen en actividades sociales o gratuitas promovidas por el estado, algunos veterinarios incluso deciden no participar por temas exclusivamente económicos, no de ausencia de pago sino de servir para el chantaje al que los somete el gremio veterinario, se sienten atemorizados.

De todo corazón espero que también se modifique la ley del ejercicio de la medicina veterinaria que está vigente desde 1968, ya eso requiere revisión y adecuación a los nuevos tiempos.
