Horta Azores Photo Extras

I still have a lot of photos from my trip to the Azores last year. I think I'll data dump them into a few posts starting with my leftovers from the city of Horta, which is on the Island of Faial. Here we go!

To get to Faial island from Sao Jorge where we were prior, we had to take a small ferry across the sea. It wasn't a very big ship, as you can see, and I got severely sea sick on the choppy water that day.

I couldn't stop puking until we landed on the island and I felt off for the rest of the day.

I was lucky to not get sick on the last day of the trip when we travelled by ferry over to the island of Pico where we caught a plane back to Ponta Delgada.

The trip was much shorter. So that's probably why.

You can actually see the island of Pico pretty easily across the water from the marina in Horta.

Unfortunately the peak of Mount Pico was always covered by the clouds, so we didn't get a good glimpse of the natural pyramid in all its glory. Oh well.

We walked the marina multiple times during our stay, both during the day and in the evening after dinner.

The main thing to see there are the hundreds of murals painted along the break water.

I dont know the rules surrounding the painting of the murals, if there are any official rules?

20250517_184446~2.jpg

I'm not sure if a person needs a permit of sorts to paint one, or if its more an accepted street art vandalism type situation.

20250517_184538~2.jpg

Like I wonder if a person walks down there with paint and a paint brush if they would be stopped or if they would be encouraged to leave their mark?

The downtown area seemed to be pretty condensed into just a few main streets.

20250517_184910~2.jpg

There was one main avenue that we spent most of our time in the evening after our activity for the day.

Some of the buildings on the street also had murals painted on them.

This underwater scene was fitting for the sea faring fisherman village.

I liked the tiled building facades as well. I thought that they had a lot of character.

20250517_185559~2.jpg

The street was lined with shops and restaurants and had an area that was almost like a plaza, but not quite.

20250517_185325~2.jpg

I liked the pattern tile of the pedestrian walkway though. It also added a lot of character and an elegance as well.

20250517_184004~2.jpg

We branched off from that main street a little, but we didn't do an intensive exploration of the entire town.

20250517_172115~2.jpg

It seemed like mostly residential area beyond the main strip.

20250517_171647~2.jpg

We also saw this tree that I thought was very interesting.

20250517_185606~2.jpg

Its like it had a beard or hair. We saw them at a few other locations in Ponta Delgada as well. I don't actually know what the hair is but if anyone else does, please let me know in the comments.

Thats about it for my extra photos from Horta. As you can see, the city is a colorful town with a lot of character. We enjoyed our short time on the island of Faial and I hope that you get to experience it one day if it looks like a place that you would enjoy.

Well thats it for now. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Yes exactly. We did get a lot of rain. There were quite a few sunny days as well though
