Charming City of Salzburg Austria

Salzburg is a mid-sized city located in the North central part of Austria right next to the border of Germany. It's about a three hour drive from the city of Vienna and about an hour from the small town of Hallstatt where we visited previously. We stayed in Salzburg for two nights starting on day two of our vacation and used it as our base camp to see a little of the surrounding area.

20220731_175416~2.jpg

We arrived in the late afternoon and after dropping our stuff off at the hotel, we took a self guided tour around the old town to see what it was all about.

20220731_194248~2.jpg

It was early evening by that point so the sun was quite low in sky as you will see in some of my photos.

20220802_095159~2.jpg

But we also walked around the next day a little in the morning and again in the evening so my pictures are from all different times of the day.

20220731_201151~2.jpg

Anyway, none of that is important and I don't know why I'm even mentioning it. Let's talk about Salzburg the city.

20220802_093011~2.jpg

I found Salzburg and the the old town especially to be very walkable. It was completely pedestrianized so we didn't have to worry about cars. It was also a fairly small and compact town so it didn't take too much walking to get around.

20220802_092757~2.jpg

I found it to be very charming as well and it had a somewhat luxurious vibe about it.

20220802_092858~2.jpg

It had that feeling that there was a lot of money in city. Maybe it was how clean and well preserved it was or maybe the giant golden orb in the center of town had something to do with it?

20220731_201023~2.jpg

The luxury vibe was especially felt while walking down the Getreidegasse, a famous shopping street with all sorts of high end stores selling designer fashion, jewelry, artisinal gifts and more.

20220731_201028~2.jpg

The street was long and connected to the other streets in the old town by these throughways, which were like covered passageways through the buildings.

20220731_200918~2.jpg

My favorite part of the street though were the traditional style iron signs.

20220731_194933~2.jpg

They were very ornate and each one was unique to the shop it represented.

20220731_195004~2.jpg

They gave a lot of character to the street and really stood out as a cool feature of the city.

20220731_195026~2.jpg

Even the Macdonalds sign was impressive to me.

20220731_194945~2.jpg

There must have been some sort of concert or festival happening or about to happen when we were there, because there were some large bleachers and screen set up outside the church. We never found out what they were for though.

20220802_092531~2.jpg

Speaking of churches, we check out some great Baroque style architecture at the Salzburg Cathedral.

20220731_200709~2.jpg

It was an impressive building located in the center of the historic district.

20220731_201536~2.jpg

It wasn't hard to see why the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

20220731_201214~2.jpg

Another fun fact is that the city was the birthplace of Mozart.

20220731_201921~2.jpg

There is a statue of the famous composer located in the square right by the cathedral.

20220731_201744~2.jpg

You can also stop by the location where he was born.

20220731_200457~2.jpg

It's a big yellow building with his name written on it; you really can't miss it.

20220731_201435~2.jpg

Another claim to fame for the city is that it was the location (or close to it) where the Sound of Music was filmed.

20220802_091545~2.jpg

I didn't see anything in the city itself about the film but we took a tour the next day and our guide mentioned it to us on the bus.

20220731_181842~2.jpg

Anytime I go anywhere I generally look to see if the place has any nice parks or public gardens near by.

20220731_181901~2.jpg

In this case, Salzburg had a great one located at Mirabell Palace.

20220731_182039~2.jpg

Behind the palace was a garden that was free to get in.

20220731_181713~2.jpg

It was full of statues and fountains and of course an abundance of flower beds.

20220731_182110~2.jpg

It was busy there but it was also large and open so it wasn't crowded at all, so that was nice.

20220802_094044~2.jpg

One thing that we didn't do was go up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

20220801_194927~2.jpg

We chose to do other things while in the city so it just wasn't something that we had time for.

20220801_194951~2.jpg

Nonetheless the fortress looked pretty cool up on the hilltop overlooking the old town below.

20220801_194957~2.jpg

We viewed it from a few different angles at different times of day, especially at night.

20220801_195107~2.jpg

We walked up the "mountain" one night for dinner so we got to see both sides of the city (the first two photos at the begining of this post showcase both sides of city). For now I'll just show you a small church that we came across on our walk that night.

20220801_195125~2.jpg

And with that I'm all out of photos of the city, so I think it's time that I wrap things up. Overall I'd say that Salzburg was one of my favorite spots in the country and certainly a highlight of our trip. In my opinion I'd say that it is a "must see" location in the country.

Well thats it for now. If you are interested in seeing more of our trip than stay tuned, there will be more to come. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

What a beautiful place! Old but vibrant. You must be in a good timing to visit that place, huh? I wonder if people there like smoking using that smoking pipes or I don't know what's it called but all photos are so great. They are delightful to see. Of course, it can be one's fav! 😊

Yes it's a very nice town. I'm not sure how many people buy pipes nowadays but I think they are pretty cool.

Aw, love this post!
We didn't visit Salzburg (note to myself - next time Austria - this city is a must!)...
You had a lovely visit and you also saw Mozart, well just his statue!

Yes it's definitely a must see city in the country in my opinion. It was among my favorite spots and there was a lot in the immediate area surrounding so it made for a great base camp.

The hills are alive with the sound of music....... the home of the real von Trapp family, and many scenes from the movie filmed here.

Nice to see it in another season, I visited in the bleak mid winter, doing a christmas coach tour. salzburg was lovely, the coach tour was crap!

Yes I learned that as well but didn't see any of the film locations. I bet it was beautiful city in the winter covered in snow. Too bad the coach tour was crap

Walkable cities appeal to me, and yes, something tells me that there's a lot of money in that city.
That giant gold orb is a sight to behold. Spectacular indeed.

Was that McDonald's a one-off Fine Dining outlet?😅

Yeah I prefer to walk everywhere we never take Uber or transit unless we absolutely have to.

Haha we didn't go into he Macdonalds so I can't say. 😂

I have always wanted to visit Salzburg, but haven't managed that even though we drive pass by the city at least 3 times a year 😂 It's a pity that you didn't go to the fortress as this would be probably the first thing that I would have visited..

The city looks pretty and indeed clean, but I wouldn't expect anything less from the Austrians 😁 I love those photos of the signs! We tend to forget to look up, but there are such nice things to be seen 🙂

Have a lovely start of the week!

It would definitely be worth a stop if you drive past it that many times per year. It was a really nice town. My photos didn't do it justice. You can check out the fortress for me and let me know what I missed! 👍
I wish I had more time to do that but alas...

Around Salzburg I visited some amazing places that I hope to post here in the near future, and yes, this city is special.

Wow, just wow! I am in awe how establishments like McDonald's just blends with the architectural design of the buildings. Says a lot that they respect the place where they put their business. Anyway, Austria is one of the places that is on my bucket list. Surely, Europe does have a lot to offer!

It's a good location for a bucket list. We did a pretty good cross country tour that looped around the country and hit a lot of the highlights. We did that in a week and I felt like we saw quite a bit. Hopefully you make it there at some point

I remember visiting Salzburg in 1977, and finding it to be a lovely city. I did take the Sound of Music bus tour, and loved it. The tour guide told us many interesting tidbits about the filming of the movie, things I'd never known before. And I'm pretty sure I went up to the fortress, but that was a long time ago. Thanks for sharing all the photos.

Great capture on the photography. Reminds me of the time I was in Germany. There’s something new I learnt about photography from this post. An upward base photo makes I more interested with the view of the sky creeping in every shot.

I always like to capture a little bit of sky, especially if it's a blue sky with some fluffy clouds. That's the best 👌
