Sunset Above the Clouds – Teide National Park, Tenerife
One of the greatest advantages of staying high on the slopes of Teide until the very end of the day is watching the Atlantic transform into a sea of clouds. On this warm June evening, I found myself standing on an ancient lava field at nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by volcanic rock shaped by eruptions thousands of years ago.
As the sun slowly descended toward the horizon, it aligned perfectly with the silhouette of La Palma, creating a spectacular sunset unlike any I had witnessed before. From Tenerife, the neighboring island often appears as a dark outline above the clouds, and for a few magical minutes, the sun seemed to melt directly into its volcanic ridges.
Below, the rugged peaks of the Teno Mountains emerged from the cloud layer, their dramatic silhouettes gradually fading into warm shades of orange and crimson. Behind me, the mighty cone of Mount Teide reflected the last rays of sunlight, glowing in deep reds and golds that highlighted the volcanic textures of the landscape.
Moments like these remind me why Teide National Park is one of the most extraordinary places for landscape photography. Within just a few kilometers, you can experience barren lava fields, alpine pine forests, towering volcanic peaks, and an endless ocean of clouds stretching to the horizon. Every sunset is different, and every evening tells its own story.
I spent nearly an hour simply watching the light change—from brilliant golden tones to soft pastel colors and finally to the cool blue hues of twilight. No rush, no crowds, just silence, volcanic rock, and one unforgettable sunset over the Canary Islands.
I hope these photographs capture at least a small part of that atmosphere.
