Cofete and Roque del Moro – The Wild Spirit of Fuerteventura

My latest trip to Fuerteventura took me to one of the island’s most remote and awe-inspiring spots – Cofete Beach and the imposing rock formation of Roque del Moro. This is a place where rugged mountains meet the untamed Atlantic Ocean, and where nature takes center stage.

Cofete – A Beach at the End of the World

Located on the southwestern coast of the Jandía peninsula, Cofete Beach is one of the most isolated and untouched areas on the island. Getting there is an adventure in itself – a winding dirt road cuts through mountains and cliffs, offering breathtaking views and more than a few adrenaline spikes.

Once you arrive, the sight is truly overwhelming: a vast, windswept beach stretching for miles, with the jagged Pico de la Zarza (the highest point on the island at 807 meters) rising in the background. The waves here are powerful and wild – not suitable for swimming, but perfect for those seeking solitude and raw, natural beauty.

Villa Winter – Mystery in the Mountains

Hidden at the base of the mountains lies the mysterious Villa Winter – a white building shrouded in legend. Built by German engineer Gustav Winter, the villa has inspired countless stories over the years, ranging from secret Nazi hideouts to submarine landings and underground tunnels. Truth or myth? No one knows for sure – and that’s part of the magic.

Roque del Moro – The Lone Sentinel

Continue walking south along the beach and you’ll encounter Roque del Moro – a solitary, massive rock formation standing defiantly in the sea. At sunrise or sunset, the play of light and shadow on this monolith is mesmerizing.

In the past, it served as a natural landmark for fishermen and sailors. Today, it’s a dream location for landscape photographers and adventurers who seek places untouched by modern tourism.

Final Thoughts

Fuerteventura is more than just beaches and wind. It’s an island of raw landscapes, deep silence, and timeless mysteries. If you crave connection with nature and a hint of the unknown – Cofete is where you’ll find it.
