When chance and photography combine (Monomad challenge)
Birth is an act of chance, a launch into the world without choosing the stage. But isn't street photography a similar exercise in controlled chance? We go out into the streets, cameras in hand, not knowing what scenes will unfold before us. We are witnesses and hunters of fleeting moments, of moments that vanish in the flow of time.
Just like the place and time of our birth, the images we capture are a product of chance. A gesture, a glance, a play of light and shadow: everything can happen in the blink of an eye, and then disappear forever. The street photographer, like the newborn, is immersed in a world they don't control, but can observe and record.
The beauty of street photography lies precisely in that unpredictability. There's no script, no rehearsal, just life unfolding in its raw and fascinating reality. Each click is a choice, a decision to freeze an instant in time, to give meaning to a fragment of existence.
Just like the agnostic facing the uncertainty of birth, the street photographer faces the uncertainty of the street. We don't know what we'll find, what stories will reveal themselves before our eyes. But in that search, in that attempt to capture the essence of everyday life, we find meaning, a way to bring order to chaos.
The photos, then, become testimonies to those small births that happen every moment in the streets. They are proof that, even in chance, we can find beauty and meaning. They are reminders that, just like with our lives, what matters isn't the starting point, but how we choose to look and record the journey.
