Almost a year ago, I started studying photography. I have done several workshops, but none as extensive as the one I am taking. This course ends in a few months, and to close with a flourish, I must deliver a portfolio of 30 photographs.
The theme is free. And that's why I chose one that I've been wanting to tackle for a long time. It is about life in a nursing home.
I asked myself the question: is it really as bad as you might expect?
By "bad" I mean the existential factor, where questions arise about early death and how this can cause so much uncertainty, melancholy, sadness, and a host of dark feelings. Also in the infrastructure, in a country like Venezuela, where health is not a priority for politicians.
Precisely in my portfolio, I intend to show the opposite. That is, to capture moments close to happiness.
When I went to Casa Hogar San Vicente de Paul, in Naguanagua, Venezuela, I found myself precisely with the premise of my work.
Not everything is pretty, not everything is laughter, but I found stories of people who prefer to be there, to spend time with their family, because at home they feel lonely or useless. On the other hand, in the nursing home, they collaborate in whatever is needed, and share bonds with other residents.
These pictures summarize my first day, which was an approach to make myself known and to tell them about my intention. They welcomed me with open arms.
Soon I will upload my progress of the photographic work, and give more details.

Desde hace casi un año comencé a estudiar fotografía. He hecho varios talleres, pero ninguno tan extenso como el que estoy tomando. Este culmina en pocos meses, y para cerrar con broche de oro, debo entregar un portafolio de 30 fotografías.
El tema es libre. Y por eso elegí uno que tenía tiempo queriendo abordar. Se trata de la vida en un ancianato.
Me planteé la pregunta: ¿realmente es tan malo como se suele esperar?
Con “malo” me refiero al factor existencial, donde surgen preguntas acerca de la pronta muerte y cómo esto puede causar tanta incertidumbre, melancolía, tristeza, y un sinfín de sentimientos oscuros. También en la infraestructura, en un país como Venezuela, donde la salud no es prioridad para los políticos.
Precisamente en mi portafolio pretendo mostrar lo contrario. Es decir, capturar momentos cercanos a la felicidad.
Cuando fui a la Casa hogar San Vicente de Paul, en Naguanagua, Venezuela, me encontré con la premisa de mi trabajo.
No todo es lindo, ni risas, pero encontré historias de personas que prefieren estar allí, a pasar ratos con su familia, porque en sus casas se sienten solas o inútiles. En cambio, en el ancianato, colaboran en cualquier cosa necesaria, y comparten lazos con otros residentes.
Estas fotografías resumen mi primer día, que fue un acercamiento para darme a conocer y plantearles mi intención. Me recibieron con los brazos abiertos.

Que interesante propuesta plasmaste con este trabajo fotográfico, es una mirada del mundo que viven estas maravillosas personas, que para mal o bien tienen un techo donde pasar el resto de sus vidas.

asylum, than being at "home" with their families.
