The Candelaria Peripheral Market is one of the most popular in the city.

It's your typical old Venezuelan market, with its labyrinthine corridors and stalls packed with vegetables, meat, herbs, and everything else you can imagine.

El Mercado Periférico de la Candelaria es uno de los más populares de la ciudad.

Es el típico mercado tradicional venezolano, de pasillos laberínticos y puestos repletos de verduras, carne, hierbas y mucho más.

I'd been told I needed to ask for permission to photograph, but I went in anyway. I ran into a man who I assumed was a coordinator, and he kindly shook my hand and told me he was there to help if I needed anything.

So I was free to wander around and take pictures. I found several vendors who waved at the camera, while others looked at me with curiosity, asking why I was there. Some told me that sales had dropped considerably.

Me habían dicho que era necesario pedir permiso para fotografiar, pero aun así entré. Me encontré con un supuesto coordinador que amablemente me tendió la mano en señal de saludo y me dijo que estaba a la orden para cualquier cosa.

Así, tuve la libertad de merodear y tomar fotos. Me encontré con varios vendedores que saludaban a la cámara, otros me miraban con curiosidad y preguntaban por qué estaba ahí. Algunos me comentaron que las ventas han disminuido considerablemente.

And it's true, because when I was a kid, I used to go with my parents, and the amount of people passing through was incredible. Everyone was shopping, everyone was just strolling around.

Now everything is different. Only a few stalls have survived, and even so, many of them do it with a smile.

Y es cierto, porque de niño solía ir con mis padres, y la cantidad de gente que transitaba por ahí era increíble. Todo el mundo comprando, todo el mundo paseando.

Ahora todo es diferente. Solo unos cuantos puestos sobreviven, y aun así, muchos lo hacen con una sonrisa.
