LA POINTE COURTE is a small fishing village in the town of Sète in southern France. Some of you are probably already familiar with this name, as this village is appearing on my profile for the third time. I was so captivated by it that I took quite a lot of photos there, which I want to share with you one by one. And for those of you who may have missed my previous posts, I’m including links here to the two earlier ones.

LA POINTE COURTE, czyli niewielka wioska rybacka w miejscowości Sète na południu Francji. Dla części z Was nazwa ta jest pewnie już znana, gdyż wioska ta gości na moim profilu już po raz trzeci. Zachwyciła mnie ona tak bardzo, że zrobiłam tam naprawdę sporo zdjęć, którymi po kolei chcę się z Wami podzielić. A dla tych, którzy być może przeoczyli moje wcześniejsze posty, wstawiam tutaj linki do poprzednich dwóch postów.

The picture above is my entry to Around The World: Challenge - #14/7

As you already know from my previous posts, at first glance this fishing village seems to be completely dominated by chaos. Practically every piece of space is filled with something. Old objects, nets, ropes, buoys, boats, recycled items, and even decorations. Some of these things look as if they were put there for a moment several years ago and simply stayed there permanently. Sometimes it is actually difficult to tell what is a functional object, what is a decoration, and what has already become a kind of local art. And I think this chaos will be very clearly visible in my photos today.

Jak już wiecie z moich poprzednich postów, ta wioska rybacka przy pierwszym spojrzeniu zdaje się być totalnie zdominowana przez chaos. Praktycznie każdy kawałek przestrzeni jest czymś wypełniony. Stare przedmioty, sieci, liny, boje, łodzie, rzeczy z odzysku, a nawet dekoracje. Część z tych rzeczy wygląda tak, jakby została tam odłożona na chwilę kilkanaście lat temu i już tak została na stałe. Czasem aż trudno jest rozpoznać, co jest tak właściwie przedmiotem użytkowym, co dekoracją, a co już właściwie lokalną sztuką. I myślę, że właśnie ten chaos będzie bardzo dobrze widoczny na moich dzisiejszych zdjęciach.

What caught my attention the most was Mr Josian’s collection — an incredible mix of objects, colours and fishing-related motifs. At first glance, it looks like nothing more than a collection of old things. When I was there, looking at all those objects, I had absolutely no idea what was behind it all. I kept wondering what all those things were doing there and what they actually meant.

After I got back to the truck, I started looking for some information and found out that Josian Izoird was a fisherman from La Pointe Courte and at the same time a self-taught artist. For many years, he collected all kinds of abandoned objects and used them to create installations around his cabanon. He took things that seemed useless and gave them a second life.

Interestingly, this collection caused some controversy among certain people. In 2018, part of the installation was removed by the municipal services after complaints from local residents. Some saw it as a work of art, while others simply saw a pile of rubbish. A group called the Front de Libération de l’Art Modeste was even created in defence of Josian and organised activities supporting his work.

So what at first glance may seem to us like complete mess and chaos is not purely the result of chance. It is actually a consciously created collection and a form of local art.

Największą moją uwagę przykuła kolekcja pana Josiana, czyli niesamowity miks przedmiotów, kolorów i rybackich motywów. Na pierwszy rzut oka wygląda to na zwykłe nagromadzenie starych rzeczy. Gdy byłam tam na miejscu i przyglądałam się tym wszystkim przedmiotom, to nie miałam zielonego pojęcia, co się za tym wszystkim kryje. Zastanawiało mnie, co tam te wszystkie przedmioty robią i jakie mają znaczenie.

Po dotarciu do samochodu zaczęłam szukać trochę informacji i dowiedziałam się, że Josian Izoirod był rybakiem z La Pointe-Courte, a jednocześnie samoukiem artystą. Przez wiele lat zbierał najróżniejsze porzucone przedmioty i tworzył z nich instalacje wokół swojego cabanonu. Brał rzeczy pozornie bezużyteczne i nadawał im drugie życie. Co ciekawe, kolekcja ta wzbudzała u niektórych osób kontrowersje.

W 2018 roku część instalacji została usunięta przez służby miejskie po skargach mieszkańców. Jedni widzieli tam dzieło sztuki, a inni po prostu stertę śmieci. W obronie Josiana powstał nawet Front de Liberation de l'Art Modeste, który organizował działania wspierające jego twórczość. Także to, co na pierwszy rzut oka wydaje się być dla nas kompletnym bałaganem i chaosem, nie jest dziełem tylko i wyłącznie przypadku. Jest to bowiem świadomie tworzona kolekcja i forma lokalnej sztuki.

The details of this place did not escape my attention either. I believe they are what carry the most soul and create the character of this place. That is why they also deserve their own individual shots.

Moim oczom nie umknęły również detale tego miejsca. Uważam, że to one mają największą duszę i tworzą charakter tego miejsca. Dlatego też zasługują na osobne kadry.

For me, as a beginner photographer, it was quite a lesson in composition. Finding my way through so much chaos was definitely not one of the easiest tasks. :D

Unfortunately, despite the fact that quite a lot of time has passed since then, I haven’t been back in that area. But I still hope that one day I’ll manage to return to this village and photograph the fishermen’s houses and their everyday life this time.

Dla mnie jako początkującego fotografa była to spora lekcja nauki kompozycji. Odnalezienie się aż tak w dużym chaosie nie należy do najłatwiejszych zadań. :D

Niestety od tamtej pory, pomimo tego, iż upłynęło już dosyć sporo czasu, nie byłam w tamtych okolicach, ale wciąż mam nadzieję, że jeszcze kiedyś uda mi się wrócić do tej wioski, aby sfotografować tym razem domy rybaków i ich codzienne życie.
