THE COLOR OF SUMMER

Kopia – Essence.jpg

Spring has barely knocked on our windows and somehow my thoughts are already drifting toward the middle of summer.😁 But that is probably because winter, as usual, felt a little too long and after months of cold weather every small sign of warmth makes me impatient for the coming season.

While browsing through my photo archive today, I stumbled upon these sunflowers and suddenly felt a bit nostalgic. Sunflowers have always been one of my favorite flowers—if not the favorite. There is something about them that feels incredibly cheerful and alive, almost like they carry their own piece of sunlight wherever they grow. And from a photographer’s point of view, they are simply beautiful subjects!

I came across this particular field of sunflowers in Romania. By pure luck I reached it very early in the morning, just as the sun was rising. The light was still soft and warm and the first rays of sunlight slowly started touching the petals. Moments like that are always special to photograph. The colors become richer, the shadows softer and the entire field seems to wake up together with the day.

Looking at these photos now makes me hope that this year I will stumble upon another sunflower field somewhere along the road. I honestly cannot wait to capture more of these summer scenes again.🙂

SUNFLOWERS (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS) originally come from North America, but today they are cultivated all over the world, especially in Europe and Asia. The plant can grow up to three meters tall and a single flower head can contain thousands of tiny individual florets that later develop into seeds!

One of the most fascinating features of young sunflowers is something called heliotropism. When the plants are still growing, their heads follow the movement of the sun from east to west during the day. This behavior helps them absorb more sunlight and grow faster. Once the flower matures, however, it usually stops moving and remains facing east. This position allows the flower to warm up quickly in the morning, which helps attract bees and other pollinators.

It is a simple plant in many ways, but standing in the middle of a sunflower field at sunrise, surrounded by hundreds of glowing yellow flowers, it feels almost impossible not to smile.😁

I hope you will enjoy this little sunflowers photo serie!
