SIMPLY WALK, STRONG IMPRESSIONS

Today I prepared another part of the French city of Lyon.

A few facts about this city:

• The whole metropolitan area of Lyon has over 2.3 million people, while the city itself has around 520 thousand inhabitants. Lyon is therefore one of the largest urban areas in France.

• One of the characteristic features of the city are the so-called "traboules", which are hidden passages between buildings that were once used by merchants and residents for quick movement. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to see them in person. To be honest, I’m not even sure if they are accessible to regular tourists.

• Lyon also has a very well-developed public transport system, including metro, trams and a funicular, which can take you up to the Fourvière hill to admire the beautiful basilica.

• Every year in December, Lyon hosts the well-known "Fête des Lumières" event, which attracts millions of tourists.

Na dzisiaj przygotowałam kolejną odsłonę francuskiego miasta Lyon.

Kilka faktów o tym mieście:

• Cała aglomeracja w rejonie Lyon to ponad 2,3 miliona osób, a sam Lyon to około 520 tysięcy mieszkańców. Lyon jest zatem jednym z największych obszarów miejskich w całej Francji.

• Jedną z charakterystycznych cech miasta to tak zwane "traboule", czyli ukryte przejścia między budynkami, które kiedyś służyły między innymi kupcom i mieszkańcom do szybkiego przemieszczania się. Niestety nie miałam okazji zobaczyć ich na żywo. W zasadzie to też nie wiem, czy są one udostępniane zwykłym turystom.

• Lyon posiada również bardzo rozbudowaną sieć transportu miejskiego, między innymi metro, tramwaje oraz funicular, którym można dostać się na wzgórze Fourvière, aby podziwiać przepiękną Bazylikę.

• Co roku w grudniu w Lyon odbywa się znane wydarzenie "Fête des Lumières", który przyciąga miliony turystów.

Lyon is also known for its rich culinary tradition. Not without reason, it is considered the culinary capital of France. It is here that you can find "bouchons lyonnais", serving traditional local dishes, but also "pâtisserie", which not only tastes delicious but also looks like small works of art. The gastronomic tradition is passed down from generation to generation.

One of the most famous French chefs was Paul Bocuse, whose mural can be seen in the photo below. He was, and still is, a symbol of French gastronomy and the creator of the so-called "nouvelle cuisine". He came from the Lyon region and his restaurant held Michelin stars for decades.

Lyon jest również znany ze swojej bogatej tradycji kulinarnej. Nie bez przekory jest uważany za kulinarną stolicę Francji. To tutaj serwuje się "bouchon lyonnais", czyli tradycyjne, lokalne dania, ale również "patisserie", które nie tylko smacznie smakują, ale wyglądają niemal jak małe dzieła sztuki. Tradycja gastronomiczna jest tutaj przekazywana z pokolenia na pokolenie.

Jeden z najsłynniejszych francuskich szefów kuchni to Paul Bocuse, którego mural możemy widzieć na poniższym zdjęciu. To on był i nadal jest symbolem francuskiej gastronomii i twórcą tak zwanej "nouvelle cuisine . In the photo below, we can see the characteristic buildings of Lyon along the Saône River. These pastel-colored townhouses are mainly part of the Vieux Lyon district, which is one of the best-preserved Renaissance districts in Europe.

Na poniższym zdjęciu widzimy charakterystyczną zabudowę Lyonu wzdłuż rzeki Saony. Te pastelowe kamienice to głównie dzielnica Vieux-Lyon, która jest jedną z najlepiej zachowanych renesansowych dzielnic w Europie.

Parts of the banks of the Rhône and the Saône have been transformed into urban spaces for relaxation. These steps serve as a kind of city beach — a meeting place, especially popular among young people. It is a very popular spot among locals, particularly in spring and summer. People come there to sit, talk, read, or simply relax.

Część nabrzeży Rodanu i Saony zostały przekształcone w miejską przestrzeń do odpoczynku. Te schody pełnią funkcję miejskiej plaży, czyli miejsca spotkań, szczególnie młodzieży. To miejsce jest bardzo popularne wśród mieszkańców, szczególnie wiosną i w okresie lata. Ludzie bardzo chętnie przychodzą tam usiąść, porozmawiać, poczytać czy po prostu odpocząć.

Floating restaurants also operate along the riverbanks. These places are quite characteristic of Lyon. They combine a gastronomic function with a space for meeting and relaxation. They usually operate seasonally and attract both tourists and local residents.

Na nabrzeżu funkcjonują również tak zwane pływające restauracje. Są to miejsca dosyć charakterystyczne dla Lyonu. Łączą one funkcję gastronomiczną z miejscem spotkań i relaksu. Zazwyczaj działają sezonowo i przyciągają zarówno turystów, jak i też lokalnych mieszkańców.

In the next photo, we can see the Passerelle Saint-Georges, one of the most characteristic bridges in Lyon. It connects the banks of the Saône and is mainly intended for pedestrian traffic. In general, bridges in Lyon are a very important part of the city. They make it possible to move around and connect the banks of both the Rhône and the Saône.

Na kolejnym zdjęciu widzimy Passerelle Saint-Georges, czyli jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych mostów w Lyonie. Łączy on brzegi Saony i jest przeznaczony głównie dla ruchu pieszych. Generalnie mosty w Lyonie są bardzo ważnym elementem miasta. Umożliwiają poruszanie się po mieście i łączą brzegi Rodanu i Saony.

One of the most important religious buildings in the city is the SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE CATHEDRAL. It is located in the Vieux Lyon district. It combines different architectural styles, mainly Romanesque and Gothic, as its construction lasted several centuries, from the 12th to the 15th century. The cathedral is also known for its astronomical clock inside, which is one of the oldest in Europe.

Jedną z najważniejszych świątyń w mieście jest katedra SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE. Znajduje się ona w dzielnicy Vieux Lyon. Łączy różne style architektoniczne, głównie romański i gotycki, gdyż jej budowa trwała kilka stuleci, od XII do XV wieku. Katedra słynie między innymi z astronomicznego zegara wewnątrz, który jest jednym z najstarszych w Europie.

Lyon is also a city that has many churches. These temples are often squeezed between urban buildings, creating an interesting contrast. In the photo below, we can see the CHURCH OF SAINT GEORGE. Its architecture is typically Gothic — a slender tower, pointed arches, and detailed elements. This church is not one of the most important landmarks in Lyon, but it is still very atmospheric and photogenic.

Lyon to również miasto, które posiada sporo kościołów. Świątynie często są wciśnięte między zabudowę miejską, co daje ciekawy kontrast. Na poniższym zdjęciu widzimy KOŚCIÓŁ ŚWIĘTEGO JERZEGO. Jego architektura jest typowo gotycka. Smukła wieża, ostre łuki, detale. Kościół ten nie jest jednym z najważniejszych zabytków w Lyon , ale jest również bardzo klimatyczny i fotogeniczny.

In a city like Lyon, an opera house cannot be missing, as it is one of the most important cultural buildings in the city. It was originally built in the 19th century and later renovated in the 1990s, which resulted in an interesting combination of a classical façade with modern elements, such as a glass roof. The building appears elegant and richly decorated with details — classic France in its purest form.

W takim mieście jak Lyon nie może również zabraknąć budynku opery, gdyż to jeden z najważniejszych budynków kulturalnych w mieście. Pierwotnie powstał on w XIX wieku, a następnie w latach 90. został przebudowany, co dało ciekawe połączenie klasycznej fasady z nowoczesnymi elementami, jak na przykład szklany dach. Budynek sprawia wrażenie eleganckiego i bogato zdobionego detalami, czyli klasyczna Francja w czystej postaci.

Lyon also has several railway stations. They are an important part of the transport system, as the city is a major transportation hub. Here we can see GARE SAINT-PAUL. It is one of the more important railway stations in the city and mainly serves regional traffic. Its architecture is rather classical and understated.

Lyon ma również kilka dworców. Są one ważnym elementem komunikacji, gdyż miasto jest bardzo dużym węzłem transportowym. Tutaj widzimy GARE SAINT-PAUL. Jest to jeden z ważniejszych dworców kolejowych w mieście. Obsługuje on głównie ruch regionalny. Jego architektura jest raczej klasyczna i stonowana.

And finally, the famous statue of LOUIS XIV cannot be missing. Louis XIV was one of the most important kings of France, known as the Sun King. The statue proudly stands in PLACE BELLECOUR, which is the central point of Lyon and one of the main meeting places in the city. On one hand, the monument represents simplicity, while on the other, it reflects monumentality and a strong symbolic character.

I na samym końcu nie może również zabraknąć słynnego pomnika LUDWIKA XIV. Ludwik XIV był jednym z najważniejszych królów Francji, nazywany Królem Słońce. Pomnik ma swoje dumne miejsce na placu Bellecour. Z kolei plac Bellecour to centralny punkt Lyonu i jedno z głównych miejsc spotkań. Pomnik z jednej strony symbolizuje prostotę, z drugiej strony pokazuje monumentalność i symboliczny charakter.
