GOLDEN ROLLS OF SUMMER

Kopia – Whispers.jpg

Summer has barely begun and I’m already thinking about the next colors that will appear across our fields. First there was the yellow of blooming rapeseed, then the red of poppies and hopefully soon there will be sunflowers as well. By the end of summer, however, everything turns golden.

The sight of freshly baled straw usually means one thing — summer is slowly beginning to say goodbye. We still have plenty of warm days ahead of us, but today I decided to dig through my archive and share a few photos I took last year.

To me, straw bales are incredibly photogenic. And when you manage to catch them during the golden hour, they can look almost magical. I hope that this year, once summer starts drawing to a close, I’ll come across another freshly harvested field and once again manage to preserve a little piece of summer for the year ahead.

Did you know that not every bale you see in a field is actually hay? Hay is made from dried grass and is mainly used as animal feed. The bales in my photos are straw bales, which are the remains left after harvesting cereal crops. Straw is commonly used as bedding for livestock, as an insulating material and sometimes even as an environmentally friendly fuel source.
