A TOUCH OF RUSSIA IN LEIPZIG, GERMANY
While taking a break in Torgau, a small town not far from Leipzig, I realized how close I was to a city I’d always wanted to visit. The train station was right there… and when the universe gives you a signal like that – you grab your camera and go. 😉
So that day became my spontaneous Leipzig Exploration Day.
First, I spent a few hours at the famous Leipzig Zoo (and yes, it's absolutely worth it!). Then I wandered through the city centre, soaking in the lively atmosphere, the mix of old and new architecture, and the buzz of local life.
Eventually, my legs were starting to complain, and I was about ready to call it a day. But then I remembered something I’d seen earlier on Google Maps – a curious Orthodox-looking church listed way off the tourist trail.
Now… I was tired, sure. But I decided to push through, gave myself a little motivational speech (and let’s be honest, a butt-clench of determination 😂), and marched toward the coordinates.
And oh, I’m so glad I did.
Because what I found was absolutely jaw-dropping.
This stunning building is the RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF ST. ALEXEI, built between 1913 and 1915. It was erected in memory of the Russian soldiers who fought and died on German soil during World War I. What's even more fascinating is that Tsar Nicholas II himself helped finance it. That’s right – this humble corner of Leipzig has direct historical ties to Imperial Russia.
The architecture is pure eye-candy: whitewashed walls, ornate golden domes, and those distinctive Russian Orthodox elements that make it feel like you've been instantly teleported to Moscow.
It’s so unique and unexpected that it stops you in your tracks – a peaceful and majestic presence tucked away on the edge of the city.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the interior this time – it was already closed when I got there – but I’ll definitely be back.
Because this wasn’t just another church visit. This was a reminder of how much history, culture, and beauty can be hidden in places you least expect – even at the end of a long, tiring day.
