A LITTLE YELLOW IN THE DARK

Kopia Essence of detail.jpg

Checking in from Spain!

Yellow flowers usually make me think of sunshine, summer and bright colours. This time, however, I decided to show them from a slightly darker side.

These flowers belong to the genus Verbascum, commonly known as MULLEIN. There are several hundred species of Verbascum, most of them native to Europe and Asia. Their flowers are usually yellow and grow along tall stems, opening gradually rather than all at once. This makes the plant particularly interesting to photograph because even on the same stem you can find fresh flowers, closed buds and flowers that have already finished blooming.

Mullein is also attractive to pollinators, which I was lucky enough to capture in one of these photos. A small bee decided that my photo session was apparently happening in its restaurant. 🐝

This time I only have four photographs, but instead of leaving them bright and colourful, I decided to experiment with a darker, moody edit. I wanted the yellow flowers to stand out against the shadows while keeping their natural details and texture.

Sometimes a small series is enough. Especially when nature sends you an unexpected model.

Thank you! Yellow can be such a tricky colour to photograph, but lately I’ve been enjoying experimenting with it more and more. 😊
