Full Moon Monday 2023-02-06

It's been a while since I shot the moon, and not often we get the clear skies here in Vermont. I saw it shining through the window tonight and since the cold wasn't excessively bad, jumped outside for a few shots. Be sure to open these large screen, they zoom in really nice. The RAW files are amazing, but way too large to upload here.

F13 1/250sec - slight crop to fill canvas

F13 1/250sec - no crop
I'm still tweeking my settings. I shot all tonight at 200 iso, but I could easily shoot much lower I think, even with the big lens and 2x TC there was plenty of light, even had the camera set for a -2 stop adjust. A lower iso would help reduce grain and maybe even improve the sharpness a bit. Given it was cold, I just shot what looked good on viewfinder without a lot of bracketing or testing.

All shots were with a Sony A7RIV, 200-600 lens with 2x TC, (Effective 1200mm) shot in both RAW and jpg mode. The RAW shots started at about 58MB. Some of the shots were done in ASC mode, which is limited to 22MB files. Tripod and Shutter release used.

Did just a bit of brightness contrast in Photoshop, and a few of the shots then were cropped in.

Here's more of a crop on the first shot.

and then a bit more crop on that same shot.

Here it is in ASC mode, F13 1/320sec, no crop. It looks pretty close to the original shot in normal mode.

This one is the ASC shot cropped in.

And the ASC shot cropped way in.

Hope your Monday is howling good!

Great snaps man...I tried to take shots of the moon...Didn't look anything like yours. If I was going to enter them in a photography contest I'd have titled them: Shits of the moon.

lol, thanks, still not quite where I'm fully pleased with it. I think the camera is definitely capable of more, I just need a little more practice time with it!

Well, if they're getting better than these I'm sure to like them.

Just on a side note, I looked at a toy today. I'm entertaining the idea of getting rid of my off road camper trailer and going for an off road caravan to haul behind the Landcruiser. Early days yet though. 😎

Shoot the moon!!!

Or is it shoot for the moon?

I read that it's the micro moon, meaning it's the farthest the moon is from earth in the cycle of a year.

I think also called the "Snow Moon". Interesting, I didn't know it was farthest away. So I got a close up of the far out. :)

Really cool shots. Its been a while since I took photos of the moon.
You should try taking pictures of half moon, the craters are even more visible then.

Here is mine, taken a few years back with 600mm lens, effective 900mm with crop sensor.

Yes, I definitely need to do one like this! Great sharpness and detail. I'm wanting to give a try at stacking once I get my settings worked out a bit more.

I think that one is called Tycho, but I'm no moon expert. Most of the examples I found look tilted. Maybe somebody else knows? @oscurity is more into astronomy do you know what it is?

beautiful photos friend, you are right one classifies the craters of the moon as "primary" and "secondary" the moon still has more craters similar to tycho, but they are on the hidden side, the side that is visible: tycho would be one of the The newest ones are just under 100M years old

Awesome, my guess based on a quick search was right! Interesting other info. I'm excited to get out there again with some revised settings (and warmer night). Thanks for the confirmation!

That's great to hear! Moon photography can be challenging due to the bright and contrasty nature of the subject, but it can also lead to stunning results. It's always amazing to see the detail and texture captured in the moon's surface.
