Jiufen Old Street: Unveiling the Real-Life Spirited Away
Have you watched the movie called Spirited Away? If you've ever been captivated by the enchanting world of Studio Ghibli's masterpiece, then you're in for a treat. Nestled along the northern coast of Taiwan, Jiufen is a place that seems to have stepped straight out of the fantastical realms of Hayao Miyazaki's imagination. Its narrow, winding streets, traditional architecture, and otherworldly ambiance bear a striking resemblance to the magical setting of Spirited Away.
Stepping into Jiufen is like entering a living painting, where every cobblestone and lantern-lit alleyway tells a story. As a tourist, you're in for an adventure that will lead you through a maze of narrow staircases and winding paths. This enchanting Taiwanese town, reminiscent of scenes from Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, invites you to embrace its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning vistas.
A Staircase to Nostalgia
The first thing you'll notice in Jiufen is the intricate network of stairs that wind their way through the town. These ancient steps, worn smooth by generations of footsteps, lead you deeper into the heart of this historic mining town. As you ascend, you'll catch glimpses of traditional teahouses, artisan shops, and captivating vistas that seem to have been frozen in time.
The Whispers of History
Each stairwell seems to echo with the whispers of the past. Jiufen was once a bustling gold mining hub, and remnants of that era can still be seen in the preserved architecture and vintage storefronts. As you traverse these steps, take a moment to imagine the lives of those who once called Jiufen home, their dreams and aspirations interwoven with the very stones beneath your feet.
Tea Houses and Treasures
As you ascend, you'll encounter a treasure trove of tea houses and artisanal shops. These hidden gems are tucked away in the nooks and crannies, inviting you to pause, indulge, and take in the intricate details of Jiufen's culture. Whether you're sipping on a fragrant brew or perusing handcrafted souvenirs, every stop along the way is a chance to delve deeper into the soul of this town.
A Symphony of Flavors
Jiufen Old Street is a culinary symphony, where every corner brims with vendors offering a diverse array of Taiwanese traditional fare. From savory to sweet, the choices are as varied as they are delicious. Be sure to try iconic dishes like stinky tofu, oyster omelets, and savory taro balls - each bite tells a story of generations of culinary craftsmanship.
Keelung Spirits
A short drive from Jiufen brings you to Keelung, home to the iconic Miaokou Night Market. Nestled within this bustling city is the Dianji Temple, a Taoist sanctuary dedicated to the revered Jade Emperor. The temple's ornate architecture and colorful sculptures provide a vivid display of Taoist beliefs and practices.
A Gaze Upon Timeless Town
After a short hike up Keelung Mountain, just a stone's throw from Jiufen's bustling Old Street, a breathtaking vista unfurls before you. The traditional rooftops of Jiufen's buildings paint a vivid tableau of red and gray, while lanterns along the streets add bursts of color, reminiscent of scenes from a cherished storybook. This panoramic view stands as a living testament to the enduring allure of this historic town, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its time-honored charm.
I hope you enjoy the scenic view of Jiufen.

I love Jiufen. I've been here twice. I've been to Taiwan 4 times and stayed almost 2 months. :D
Sorry I didn't find this before. WOW! 👀🔥
Spirited Away was my one of me daughter's favourite movies for months on end. We must've watched it ten plus times. And she was only around seven years old at the time. I thought it was pretty scary for a little girl. But she was smitten with it in full :)
There is no need to say sorry, you'll never be late coz I meant to immortalize my photos here 😁
I also thought Spirited Aways was scary, but it tells a wonderful story and the vibes honestly felt like being in the Jiufen during winter or rainy season. Thank you for liking my posts, I bet your daughter is still down to watch it for the nth time haha!
Well my pleasure because I really like your posts!
It's a cult classic. I suspect we will return to it again and again.
I'll send her a link to your post. Hoping she will spread her wings and see the world. This should inspire her!
Have a great day 🌸
