I Accidentally Found an Old Mall in the middle of Taipei

Ximenting

On a chilly Saturday, Ximending was bustling with activity, just like always. Ximending is like Taipei's own version of "Harajuku," a place full of history and culture right in the middle of the city. Situated in Wanhua District, it's a lively area known for its focus on young people's interests, fun things to do, and great places to shop.

That day, I went to Ximending to find a cozy coffee shop. I wanted a nice spot to relax, write some blogs, and do a bit of my part-time work. It turned out to be a perfect choice!

Lots of tourists love Ximending in Taipei. It's famous because it's a lively place with a mix of cultures. The old-style Japanese influence and modern trends make it special. People enjoy shopping and having fun there. It's a top spot for tourists in Taipei.

Ximending was really important during Taiwan's move to democracy. Students and politicians used to gather here to talk about freedom. Even today, there are still political and cultural events happening in this area. It's like a place where history is still alive!

I arrived in Ximending and witnessed a parade, which appeared to consist of both political and religious groups. In Taiwan, religious processions often feature large statues of Gods. Normally, I see people wearing casual clothes during religious parades, but this time, I noticed some in traditional aboriginal dresses.

I took some time to watch the processions, and while I was enjoying it, I suddenly needed to use the restroom. I randomly entered a building that was filled with cellphone repair shops, as well as secondhand phone and accessory stores.

With my poor level of Chinese, I asked a store seller "不好意思,這裡有廁所嗎" (Excuse me, is there a toilet in this place?) And she told me to go upstairs.

When I saw these men playing the old arcade games, I started to find this place interesting. It suddenly felt so retro. Looking around, I realized that this place turned out to be an old mall situated in the middle of a shopping district. I just found another gem in Taipei! By gem, I mean a place that not most tourists or foreigners would simply know exists.

As I went around searching for the toilet, I kept stumbling upon intriguing sights that were just begging to be captured. Take, for instance, these elevators moving in opposite directions, creating a captivating side view frame.

On the second floor, you can't miss the ceiling and walls that give off a strong 90's vibe. It's like stepping into a time capsule!

The walls are built with bricks, and on the left side, the wooden decorations are showing signs of age. The emergency exit door has stenciled paint, giving it a distinct look.

Even though outside is bustling with people, this place is nearly deserted, which makes me feel a bit uneasy. I can't help but wonder, am I supposed to be here?

And I finally found the restroom tucked away in the corner of the building. The atmosphere here really transports me back in time. The colors and lighting have this wonderfully old-school, vintage feel.

After using the restroom, my curiosity was still piqued, so I wandered around a bit more. And to my surprise, I stumbled upon yet another gem - this old mall has a cinema on the top floor!

I noticed a few locals heading into the cinema, so it seems like that's the main attraction of this mall. I'll make sure to return and catch a movie here next time, maybe with a friend. That would be a great experience!

On the floor beneath the cinema, I spotted mannequins dressed in elegant gowns. This section of the building seems to be a spot for affordable tailored dresses, perfect for weddings and special occasions.

And that concluded my exploration of the building after thoroughly wandering through it. Oh, here's an interesting surprise - I stumbled upon small casinos inside! I ventured in and it was bustling with people. However, I got a little surprise of my own when the receptionist found out I wasn't Taiwanese. They politely asked me to leave, no photos allowed! Quite the adventure, I must say!

Interesting place! Very retro indeed. And why did the receptionist ask you to leave? Is the small casino only for Taiwanese? Maybe it's part of the "dark side" of Taiwan? 😅

Yeah you are right! These kind of casinos are often exclusive for gangsters. She asked me if I am a member, but obviously not. So kicked me out 🤣
