Wild Animals Living Near Me
I often see wild deer in the large field on cold, sunny mornings. In my area of Canada, I usually see deer very early in the morning or after dark. During the day, I rarely see them in the fields in the mountains, and when I do, they are far away from me.
In contrast, in my hometown in Japan, I often saw deer close to people at any time of day in the mountains or even in fields near communities. From my observations, wild animals here tend to keep a greater distance from people compared to wild animals in Japan.
One morning, when I came back from the hospital after an early exam, my husband noticed a family of deer in the field. At least three or four deer were eating their breakfast. The atmosphere looked incredibly peaceful, almost like an image of heaven. Diamond dust was sparkling, sunlight was reflecting off the snow on the ground, and fog was floating in the cold air. There was nobody else around, just them in nature. We were the only car nearby.
One small-looking deer noticed us and looked in our direction. I think the adult deer also noticed us, but they didn’t react at all. They looked very calm. The curious little deer seemed almost friendly. The sky was beautiful, glowing with a golden light.
There are no wild animals in this picture, but I often see a large bald eagle flying near this lake. I believe there may be a nest nearby. I found it interesting to see a lone pine tree sitting on the frozen lake after the Christmas season. Many people decorate pine trees inside their homes for Christmas, but this tree was sitting alone in nature. Comparing a house Christmas tree and this wild pine tree, I feel that the wild one somehow has more freedom. Nature always gives us interesting gifts like this.
My husband and our dog also discovered a funny clue left by a visitor. There were seeds scattered on the snow near the woodshed. We know squirrels live under the woodshed, and we don’t mind as long as they don’t go under our house. The woodshed is far enough from the house, so it’s a good place for them. Sometimes they go inside the woodshed and leave seeds behind on the stacked wood.
This time, they left their food outside. My husband had placed some leftover wood outside the woodshed last autumn, and the squirrels seem to be using it as a table for their meals. Even my dog allows them to use his yard. One of the squirrels sometimes comes quite close to him.
We truly enjoy witnessing wild animals living near us like this.

身近な野生動物
寒くてよく晴れた朝、大きな原っぱで野生の鹿をよく見かけます。カナダのこの地域では、鹿を見るのはたいてい早朝か、暗くなってからです。昼間に山の中の野原で鹿を見かけることはほとんどないですが、とても遠くの方にたまに見えることがあります。
一方で、日本の地元では、山でも集落の近くの畑でも、時間帯に関係なく、人のすぐそばで鹿を見かけることがあります。私自身の意見ですが、こちらの野生動物は、日本の野生動物に比べて、人との距離を少し保っているように感じます。
ある朝、病院で早朝の検査を終えて帰ってきたとき、主人が野原に鹿の家族がいることに気づきました。３〜４頭ほどの鹿たちが、朝ごはんを食べていました。その光景はとても静かで、まるで想像上の天国の情景のようでした。ダイヤモンドダストがきらきらと輝き、太陽の光が雪に反射し、冷たい空気の中に霧がふわふわと漂っていました。その場所には鹿たち以外に誰もおらず、近くを通る車も私たちだけでした。
小さめの鹿がこちらに気づいて、じっと見ていました。大人の鹿たちも気づいていたと思いますが、特に反応はせず、とても落ち着いていました。その好奇心のある小さな鹿は、フレンドリーな感じに見えました。空は金色に輝いていて、とても美しかったです。
この写真には野生動物は写っていませんが、この湖の近くでは、大きなハクトウワシが飛んでいるのをよく見かけます。近くに巣があるのかもしれません。クリスマスシーズンが終わったあとの、凍った湖に１本だけ横になっている松の木がとても印象的でした。家の中では松の木をクリスマスツリーとして飾る人がいますが、この木は自然の中で、ひとり静かに横たわっていました。家のクリスマスツリーと、この野生の松の木を比べると、なぜかこちらのほうが自由に見えます。自然はいつも、こんなふうに面白い贈り物をくれます。
夫と犬は、愉快な来客の痕跡も見つけました。薪小屋のそばの雪の上に、種が散らばっていたのです。リスが薪小屋の下に住んでいることを知っていますが、家の下に来なければよいので、特に気にしていません。薪小屋と家は十分に離れているので、リスにとってはちょうど良い場所です。ときどき薪小屋の中に入り、薪の上に種を残していくこともあります。
今回は、外に食べ物を置いていったようでした。昨年の秋に、夫が薪小屋の外に置いていた余りの木々の利用して、リスたちは食事用のテーブルとして使っているようです。家の犬も、彼らが庭を使うのを許しているみたいです。リスの１匹は、ときどき犬のすぐ近くまで来ることもあります。
私たちは、こんなふうに身近で野生動物の暮らしを見守れることを、とても楽しんでいます。
