Why the Apples Are Small and the Return of the Blue Jay

I've noticed that small apples have been appearing at supermarkets and farm markets lately. I found myself wondering why they have been so small these days. I've never had the chance to ask a specialist. I could have asked someone at a farm market, but I hesitated to ask such detailed questions of the growers and experts I respect so much. I always feel a great deal of appreciation for farmers.

One day, while reading the local news as usual, I came across an interesting headline that said "Tiny Giants: Why Honeycrisp Apples Appear Smaller Right Now." Wow, that was exactly what I wanted to know! Surprisingly, the person being interviewed was the very specialist I had wanted to ask at the local farm market. What a coincidence! The answer to my question was coming to me through the article.

As you may know, Honeycrisp apples are famous for their large size. They are usually among the biggest apples sold in stores. They are not only large but also sweet, crunchy, and easy to enjoy. I imagine there are many Honeycrisp fans at local markets. However, in recent months, they have been noticeably smaller in my area.

The simple answer is this. "With the lack of rain last summer, many different apple varieties struggled to reach market grade." Hmm... that made a lot of sense to me. We struggled with our well drying up last summer as well. It was a very difficult experience. Apples are primarily made of water, so they simply don't grow as large during dry periods, the article explained.

Farmers usually manage the size of Honeycrisp apples very carefully because they can grow too large for standard market grades. That gave me an interesting thought. Every year, farmers work hard to keep them from becoming too big. Yet this year, they wished the apples would grow larger. As you can see, farming is tough work! It's not easy to work alongside nature's ever-changing conditions.

The article also mentioned that Honeycrisp apples can sometimes grow to the size of a baby's head if they aren't carefully managed. Holy moly! I think I'd like to try one of those giant Honeycrisps if I ever get the chance. According to the article, they still taste just as good despite their size. As an apple lover, I wouldn't mind having giant apples growing on my own trees. The story reminded me a little of Alice in Wonderland.

After work, I came back from walking the dog. As usual, my head was full of thoughts. Once I start having those endless conversations in my mind, it's difficult to stop them. Nature often helps me break that cycle. This time, the helper was a blue jay feather.

As you know, blue jay feathers are blue. Amazingly, they also have beautiful spotted patterns. When I looked down, I noticed a lovely gift on the ground. I'm pretty sure it wasn't there when I left for my walk. Someone must have visited my property while I was away. I wish I could have met the visitor, but it left a feather behind for me.

I picked it up and admired its beautiful pattern in the sunlight. Then I noticed how green and beautiful my trees were. I could hear many different birds singing among the branches. Finally, my busy thoughts disappeared. Interruptions from nature are always welcome, and they are often exactly what I need.

Anyway, I hope we receive enough rain this summer. I've certainly been grateful for this week's rainfall.

りんごが小さい理由とブルージェイの再来

最近、スーパーやファーマーズマーケットで小さなりんごを見かけるようになりました。どうして最近のりんごはこんなに小さいのだろうと不思議に思っていました。これまで専門家に尋ねる機会はありませんでした。ファーマーズマーケットで聞くこともできたのですが、尊敬している生産者や専門家の方々にそんな細かいことを質問するのは少しためらいがありました。いつも農家の方々に大きな感謝の気持ちを抱いていますから、聞きづらいところがあります。

ある日、いつものように地元のニュースを読んでいると、「なぜ今、ハニークリスプりんごは小さいのか」という興味深い見出しを見つけました。わあ、まさに私が知りたかったことです！しかも驚いたことに、その記事でインタビューを受けていたのは、私が地元のファーマーズマーケットで聞いてみたいと思っていた、まさにそのお店の方でした。なんという偶然なのでしょう。私の疑問への答えが、記事を通して向こうからやってきてくれました。

ご存じの方も多いと思いますが、ハニークリスプは大きなサイズで知られているりんごです。お店ではたいてい一番大きなりんごのひとつです。大きいだけでなく、甘くてシャキシャキしていて食べやすいのも魅力です。地元のマーケットにもファンがたくさんいるのではないでしょうか。ところが、ここ数か月、私の地域ではそのハニークリスプが目に見えて小さくなっていました。

その答えはとてもシンプルでした。「昨年の夏の雨不足によって、多くのりんご品種が市場基準のサイズまで育つのに苦労した」とのこと。なるほど…とても納得できました。

私たちの家でも昨年の夏、井戸が干上がりかけて大変な思いをしたからです。これは本当に厳しい経験でした。記事によると、りんごの大部分は水分でできているため、乾燥した時期にはどうしても大きく育たないのだそうです。

その話を聞いて、興味深いなと感じました。毎年、農家の方々はりんごが大きくなりすぎないように苦労しているのだそうです。ところが今年は、もっと大きく育ってほしいと願わなければならなかった。本当に農業は大変な仕事ですね。変わり続ける自然条件と向き合いながら仕事をするのは簡単なことではないのだと思います。

記事には、管理をしなければハニークリスプは時に赤ちゃんの頭ほどの大きさになることもあると書かれています。なんと！もし機会があれば、その巨大なハニークリスプをぜひ食べてみたいです。記事によると、そんなに大きくても味は変わらずおいしいそうです。りんご好きとしては、自分のりんごの木にもそんな巨大りんごが実ってほしいものです。この話を聞いていると、なんだか「不思議の国のアリス」のような話を思い出しました。

仕事の後、犬の散歩から帰ってきました。いつものように頭の中は考えごとでいっぱいでした。ひとたび考え始めると、頭の中のおしゃべりはなかなか止まらないのです。そんなとき、自然がよく私を助けてくれます。今回助けてくれたのは、ブルージェイの羽でした。

ご存じのように、ブルージェイの羽は青色です。でも驚くことに、美しい水玉模様のようなパターンの羽もあります。ふと足元を見ると、素敵な贈り物が落ちていました。散歩に出かけるときには、確かなかったと思います。留守の間に、誰かが庭を訪れていたのでしょう。会うことはできませんでしたが、その代わりに羽を残していってくれました。

私はその羽を拾い上げ、光に透かしてきれいな模様を眺めました。そして周りを見ると、木々は青々として本当にきれいでした。枝の間からはさまざまな鳥たちの声も聞こえてきました。気がつくと、頭の中いっぱいだった考えごとは消えていました。自然からのこうした中断は、いつでも歓迎です。その中断は私が本当に必要としているものだと思うのです。

とにかく、この夏は十分な雨が降ってくれることを願っています。とりあえず今週の雨には本当に感謝しています。
