Why Do People Throw Sneakers on Power Lines?

I love to watch sneakers hanging on power lines sometimes. I know it’s not good for the power lines, but when I look up at the sky in towns, the scene with multiple power lines and the sky looks stunning for photography. I often see this in busy, lively towns. This particular view was perfect because there were so many electric lines.

Shoes on power lines can carry different meanings. Sometimes, they’re hung as a memorial for someone who died on that street, allowing the neighbourhood to pay their respects. From the 70s to the 90s, they were also used to mark gang territory or signal drug activity, a warning to rivals. Some kids imitated these acts for fun, unaware of their meanings, tossing old shoes as a game. Sadly, it has also been a form of bullying, with victims’ shoes thrown up to shame them after a fight. Additionally, some people say that soldiers do it with their boots on military bases. I remember that Tim Burton’s Big Fish features a memorable scene with shoes hanging on a line.

Hmm… there are many different meanings to it. I have no idea why this person did it in my photo. They look like soccer shoes or running spikes, or something. Anyway, it’s very interesting to take photos of the sky like this. If you know any other reason for this action, let me know.

Now that amazing and new info for me! was totally unaware of the original meaning. Thanx so much for educating me in this particular question. (I'm rather obsessed with it too) 🙃

No worries. I didn’t know about it at the beginning when I started noticing it often. I heard about it from my husband and read some articles as well. Also, I added the soldiers' meaning this time. In my original country, this would be a big trouble to do!

My daughter loves to stumble upon this sort of stuff around. She had been watching one pair of sneakers near our summer place, I think, for 5 years! - until this summer finally the wires became vacant again :)
She always enquired me of the reason why they are there; now I may direct her at your post. 😍 !LOLZ
